    Test and commissioning of the CARLOS control boards for the ALICE Silicon Drift Detectors

    This paper presents the test strategy employed during the installation of the CARLOS end ladder boards developed for the Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) of ALICE. Each CARLOS board compresses the data provided by the front-end electronics of one SDD and sends them via an optical link of 800 Mbit/s to the data concentrator card (CARLOSrx) located in the counting room. The paper describes the integration of the CARLOS boards in the final SDD system, including its cooling and mechanical support, the power supply distribution and the optical interconnections. The results of the tests performed after each step of the installation sequence are reported

    The paper presents an end-ladder card prototype of the data acquisition chain of the ALICE SDD experiment. The prototype includes most of the electronics devices that will be applied to ALICE SDD experiment. The card interfaces with the front-end electronics and with the counting room detector data link via the interface card named CARLOS_rx. The end_ladder PCB has been fully tested by providing control signals and input vectors via a pattern generator and by collecting output data via the detector data link

    Safety Assessment for Certified Air Data Systems based on Synthetic Sensors

    The work deals with safety assessment for the innovative modular digital air data system developed under the MIDAS project, funded in the Clean Sky 2 frame. The MIDAS’s main innovation is based on estimation of aerodynamic angles (angle of attack and sideslip) using synthetic sensors instead of classical vanes (or sensors), whereas pressure and temperature are directly measured with Pitot and temperature probes. As known, air data systems are safety-critical ones that are usually redundant in order to be compliant with the safety requirements of airworthiness regulations. In order to meet safety objectives, a single (simplex) ADS is studied in order evaluate its own safety characteristics starting from reliability known data for any air data system items. These results are then collected in order to provide necessary information to the aircraft integrator that is in charge to define the system redundancy. The present paper introduces the common aeronautical procedures for system safety assessment to be applied to a safety critical system based on synthetic sensors for the first time. Standard procedures are applied to the MIDAS project in order to evaluate its safety characteristics with respect to safety objectives defined at aircraft level in accordance with the aircraft integrator. Results shown in this work provide information on criticality allocated to any air data functionalities that will be used to study the overall ADS redundancy

    Studying the interaction between charm and light-flavor mesons

    International audienceThe two-particle momentum correlation functions between charm mesons (D±\mathrm{D^{*\pm}} and D±\mathrm{D}^\pm) and charged light-flavor mesons (π±\pi^{\pm} and K±^{\pm}) in all charge-combinations are measured for the first time by the ALICE Collaboration in high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=13\sqrt{s} =13 TeV. For DK\mathrm{DK} and DK\mathrm{D^*K} pairs, the experimental results are in agreement with theoretical predictions of the residual strong interaction based on quantum chromodynamics calculations on the lattice and chiral effective field theory. In the case of Dπ\mathrm{D}\pi and Dπ\mathrm{D^*}\pi pairs, tension between the calculations including strong interactions and the measurement is observed. For all particle pairs, the data can be adequately described by Coulomb interaction only, indicating a shallow interaction between charm and light-flavor mesons. Finally, the scattering lengths governing the residual strong interaction of the Dπ\mathrm{D}\pi and Dπ\mathrm{D^*}\pi systems are determined by fitting the experimental correlation functions with a model that employs a Gaussian potential.     Measurement of the production cross section of prompt Ξ0c baryons in p–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV

    The transverse momentum (pT) differential production cross section of the promptly-produced charm-strange baryon Ξ0c (and its charge conjugate Ξ0c¯¯¯¯¯¯) is measured at midrapidity via its hadronic decay into π+Ξ− in p−Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon−nucleon collision sNN−−−√ = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The Ξ0c nuclear modification factor (RpPb), calculated from the cross sections in pp and p−Pb collisions, is presented and compared with the RpPb of Λ+c baryons. The ratios between the pT-differential production cross section of Ξ0c baryons and those of D0 mesons and Λ+c baryons are also reported and compared with results at forward and backward rapidity from the LHCb Collaboration. The measurements of the production cross section of prompt Ξ0c baryons are compared with a model based on perturbative QCD calculations of charm-quark production cross sections, which includes only cold nuclear matter effects in p−Pb collisions, and underestimates the measurement by a factor of about 50. This discrepancy is reduced when the data is compared with a model in which hadronisation is implemented via quark coalescence. The pT-integrated cross section of prompt Ξ0c-baryon production at midrapidity extrapolated down to pT = 0 is also reported. These measurements offer insights and constraints for theoretical calculations of the hadronisation process. Additionally, they provide inputs for the calculation of the charm production cross section in p−Pb collisions at midrapidity

    The inclusive production of the charm-strange baryon Ω0c is measured for the first time via its semileptonic decay into Ω−e+νe at midrapidity (|y| < 0.8) in proton–proton (pp) collisions at the centre-of-mass energy √s = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The transverse momentum (pT) differential cross section multiplied by the branching ratio is presented in the interval 2 < pT < 12 GeV/c. The branching-fraction ratio BR(Ω0c → Ω−e+νe)/BR(Ω0c → Ω−π+) is measured to be 1.12 ± 0.22 (stat.) ± 0.27 (syst.). Comparisons with other experimental measurements, as well as with theoretical calculations, are presented

    Multiplicity dependence of charged-particle intra-jet properties in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV

    The first measurement of the multiplicity dependence of intra-jet properties of leading charged-particle jets in proton-proton (pp) collisions is reported. The mean charged-particle multiplicity and jet fragmentation distributions are measured in minimum-bias and high-multiplicity pp collisions at s√ = 13 TeV using the ALICE detector. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles produced in the midrapidity region (|η|<0.9) using the sequential recombination anti-kT algorithm with jet resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 for the transverse momentum (pT) interval 5−110 GeV/c. High-multiplicity events are selected by the forward V0 scintillator detectors. The mean charged-particle multiplicity inside the leading jet cone rises monotonically with increasing jet pT in qualitative agreement with previous measurements at lower energies. The distributions of jet fragmentation functions zch and ξch are measured for different jet-pT intervals. Jet-pT independent fragmentation of leading jets is observed for wider jets except at high- and low-zch. The observed "hump-backed plateau" structure in the ξch distribution indicates suppression of low-pT particles. In high-multiplicity events, an enhancement of the fragmentation probability of low-zch particles accompanied by a suppression of high-zch particles is observed compared to minimum-bias events. This behavior becomes more prominent for low-pT jets with larger jet radius. The results are compared with predictions of QCD-inspired event generators, PYTHIA 8 with Monash 2013 tune and EPOS LHC. It is found that PYTHIA 8 qualitatively reproduces the jet modification in high-multiplicity events except at high jet pT. These measurements provide important constraints to models of jet fragmentation

    Systematic study of flow vector decorrelation in sNN=5.02\mathbf{\sqrt{\textit{s}_{_{\bf NN}}}=5.02} TeV Pb-Pb collisions

    International audienceMeasurements of the pTp_{\rm T}-dependent flow vector fluctuations in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 5.02~\mathrm{TeV} using azimuthal correlations with the ALICE experiment at the LHC are presented. A four-particle correlation approach [1] is used to quantify the effects of flow angle and magnitude fluctuations separately. This paper extends previous studies to additional centrality intervals and provides measurements of the pTp_{\rm T}-dependent flow vector fluctuations at sNN=5.02 TeV\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 5.02~\mathrm{TeV} with two-particle correlations. Significant pTp_{\rm T}-dependent fluctuations of the V2\vec{V}_{2} flow vector in Pb-Pb collisions are found across different centrality ranges, with the largest fluctuations of up to \sim15% being present in the 5% most central collisions. In parallel, no evidence of significant pTp_{\rm T}-dependent fluctuations of V3\vec{V}_{3} or V4\vec{V}_{4} is found. Additionally, evidence of flow angle and magnitude fluctuations is observed with more than 5σ5\sigma significance in central collisions. These observations in Pb-Pb collisions indicate where the classical picture of hydrodynamic modeling with a common symmetry plane breaks down. This has implications for hard probes at high pTp_{\rm T}, which might be biased by pTp_{\rm T}-dependent flow angle fluctuations of at least 23% in central collisions. Given the presented results, existing theoretical models should be re-examined to improve our understanding of initial conditions, quark--gluon plasma (QGP) properties, and the dynamic evolution of the created system
