Influence of Storage of Wet Arabica Parchment Prior to Wet Hulling on Moulds Development, OchratoxinA Contamination, and Cup Quality of Mandheling Coffee
Mandheling coffee has been a well known specialty coffees for decades and the demand for this coffee is currently increasing. This coffee is characterised by low acidity, heavy-complex body, spicy-little earthy and fruity flavor. Mandheling coffee is produced by smallholder farmers in the highland surrounding Lake TobaNorth Sumatra in an unique way i.e. following de-pulping and 1ā2 days sundrying, wet parchment is stored for varying periods up to a few weeks, the parchments are then de-hulled when still wet (40ā45% moisture content) then the beans sundried. The handling procedure presumably contributes to the unique cup character of Mandheling coffee. On the other hand the storage of wet pachments may cause mould growth and mycotoxin contamination. This trial was designed to study the influence of storage of wet parchments prior to wet hulling on mould development, OTA contamination and cup Mandheling characteristic of the coffee product. The normal wet process, drying of parchment thoroughly to 12% moisture content was used as the control. Parchment coffees (6 lots) used for this trial were drawn from farmers and collectors in the region. The wet parchments (41.74ā53.96% moisture content) were stored for 1 (D1), 7 (D7) and 14 (D14) days in PE sacks in a warehouse in the region. During the storage period, when there was visible mould growth, the parchments were spread on a plastic sheet inside the warehouse, as per common practice to suppress the mould growth. Following storage, the wet parchment was de-hulled and then sun-dried to a moisture content of 12% (MC12%) or dried to a moisture content of 17%, and held in storage for 3 weeks prior to final drying to 12% mc. The ānormal wet process\u27 i.e. fresh-non stored parchments dried thoroughly to 12%, were used as the control. Parameters measured were visual evaluation, mould infestation, a w, moisture content (MC) on the stored parchment; while for dried beans mould infestation, OTA content and the Mandheling cup character evaluation (done by 4 panelists who were familiar to the coffee) were determined. Some mould species grew during the storage course, with black Aspergillus was the dominant species found in the beans, while A. ochraceusan OTA producer, was found in some samples with low infection rate (0ā15.3%). Spreading of coffee inside the warehouse during the day could suppress moulds growth. OTA was found in only 5 samples out of 42 samples with range of 0.17ā2.24 ppb, very less than European Union limit. There was no clear trend of storage period on the mould infection rates, OTA content, and the Mandheling cup characters. The high variability of the outcome was likely due to the inhomogenity of parchments used for this trial. The best Mandheling was found in the sample of D1-MC12%-coffee source of lot 1
Competition: A Missing Component of Fruit Fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) Risk Assessment and Planning
Tephritid fruit flies are internationally significant pests of horticulture. Because they are also highly invasive and of major quarantine concern, significant effort is placed in developing full or partial pest risk assessments (PRAs) for fruit flies, while large investments can be made for their control. Competition between fruit fly species, driven by the need to access and utilise fruit for larval development, has long been recognised by researchers as a fundamental component of fruit fly biology, but is entirely absent from the fruit fly PRA literature and appears not be considered in major initiative planning. First presenting a summary of the research data which documents fruit fly competition, this paper then identifies four major effects of fruit fly competition that could impact a PRA or large-scale initiative: (i) numerical reduction of an existing fruit fly pest species following competitive displacement by an invasive fruit fly; (ii) displacement of a less competitive fruit fly pest species in space, time or host; (iii) ecological resistance to fruit fly invasion in regions already with competitively dominant fruit fly species; and (iv) lesser-pest fruit fly resurgence following control of a competitively superior species. From these four major topics, six more detailed issues are identified, with each of these illustrated by hypothetical, but realistic biosecurity scenarios from Australia/New Zealand and Europe. The scenarios identify that the effects of fruit fly competition might both positively or negatively affect the predicted impacts of an invasive fruit fly or targeted fruit fly control initiative. Competition as a modifier of fruit fly risk needs to be recognised by policy makers and incorporated into fruit fly PRAs and major investment initiatives
The Fallacy of Year-Round Breeding in Polyphagous Tropical Fruit Flies (Diptera: Tephritidae): Evidence for a Seasonal Reproductive Arrestment in Bactrocera Species
Bactrocera fruit flies are major pests of horticulture in tropical parts of the world and are highly invasive. Able to breed in many different fruit types, and living in hot to warm climates where temperature is not limiting, it is assumed that these flies breed continuously in their native environment. However, Bactrocera are native to monsoonal rainforests, where the mature fruit needed for breeding is largely absent for four to five months a year during the dry season. Reviewing literature and published population graphs of these flies, we argue that there is evidence to suggest that these flies undergo a reproductive arrest during the dry season when breeding hosts are scarce. We believe females stop or limit reproduction through a diapause or quiescence mechanism, so extending their life-span during the unfavourable breeding period. Once through that period they then switch their life-history strategy to focus on reproduction. Evidence is that this behaviour continues in invaded and agricultural systems and is not just restricted to rainforests. We cannot confirm this hypothesis with the information available, but because of its potential significance in managing these pests we urge that targeted research be carried out to confirm or deny the hypothesis
Software Tools to Support Research on Airport Departure Planning
A simple, portable and useful collection of software tools has been developed for the analysis of airport surface traffic. The tools are based on a flexible and robust traffic-flow model, and include calibration, validation and simulation functionality for this model. Several different interfaces have been developed to help promote usage of these tools, including a portable Matlabā implementation of the basic algorithms; a web-based interface which provides online access to automated analyses of airport traffic based on a database of real-world operations data which covers over 250 U.S. airports over a 5-year period; and an interactive simulation-based tool currently in use as part of a college-level educational module. More advanced applications for airport departure traffic include taxi-time prediction and evaluation of āwindowingā congestion control
Resolving cryptic species complexes of major tephritid pests
An FAO/IAEA Co-ordinated Research Project (CRP) on āResolution of Cryptic Species Complexes of Tephritid Pests to Overcome Constraints to SIT Application and International Tradeā was conducted from 2010 to 2015. As captured in the CRP title, the objective was to undertake targeted research into the systematics and diagnostics of taxonomically challenging fruit fly groups of economic importance. The scientific output was the accurate alignment of biological species with taxonomic names; which led to the applied outcome of assisting FAO and IAEA Member States in overcoming technical constraints to the application of the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) against pest fruit flies and the facilitation of international agricultural trade. Close to 50 researchers from over 20 countries participated in the CRP, using coordinated, multidisciplinary research to address, within an integrative taxonomic framework, cryptic species complexes of major tephritid pests. The following progress was made for the four complexes selected and studied:
Anastrepha fraterculus complex ā Eight morphotypes and their geographic and ecological distributions in Latin America were defined. The morphotypes can be considered as distinct biological species on the basis of differences in karyotype, sexual incompatibility, post-mating isolation, cuticular hydrocarbon, pheromone, and molecular analyses. Discriminative taxonomic tools using linear and geometric morphometrics of both adult and larval morphology were developed for this complex.
Bactrocera dorsalis complex ā Based on genetic, cytogenetic, pheromonal, morphometric, and behavioural data, which showed no or only minor variation between the Asian/African pest fruit flies Bactrocera dorsalis, B. papayae, B. philippinensis and B. invadens, the latter three species were synonymized with B. dorsalis. Of the five target pest taxa studied, only B. dorsalis and B. carambolae remain as scientifically valid names. Molecular and pheromone markers are now available to distinguish B. dorsalis from B. carambolae.
Ceratitis FAR Complex (C. fasciventris, C. anonae, C. rosa) ā Morphology, morphometry, genetic, genomic, pheromone, cuticular hydrocarbon, ecology, behaviour, and developmental physiology data provide evidence for the existence of five different entities within this fruit fly complex from the African region. These are currently recognised as Ceratitis anonae, C. fasciventris (F1 and F2), C. rosa and a new species related to C. rosa (R2). The biological limits within C. fasciventris (i.e. F1 and F2) are not fully resolved. Microsatellites markers and morphological identification tools for the adult males of the five different FAR entities were developed based on male leg structures.
Zeugodacus cucurbitae (formerly Bactrocera (Zeugodacus) cucurbitae) ā Genetic variability was studied among melon fly populations throughout its geographic range in Africa and the Asia/Pacific region and found to be limited. Cross-mating studies indicated no incompatibility or sexual isolation. Host preference and genetic studies showed no evidence for the existence of host races. It was concluded that the melon fly does not represent a cryptic species complex, neither with regard to geographic distribution nor to host range. Nevertheless, the higher taxonomic classification under which this species had been placed, by the time the CRP was started, was found to be paraphyletic; as a result the subgenus Zeugodacus was elevated to genus level.Fil: Hendrichs, Jorge. The Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey V: Extended Radio Sources in Massive Galaxy Clusters at z~1
We present the results from a pilot study with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large
Array (JVLA) to determine the radio morphologies of extended radio sources and
the properties of their host-galaxies in 10 massive galaxy clusters at z~1, an
epoch in which clusters are assembling rapidly. These clusters are drawn from a
parent sample of WISE-selected galaxy clusters that were cross-correlated with
the VLA Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters survey (FIRST) to
identify extended radio sources within 1 of the cluster centers. Out
of the ten targeted sources, six are FR II sources, one is an FR I source, and
three sources have undetermined morphologies. Eight radio sources have
associated Spitzer data, 75% presenting infrared counterparts. A majority of
these counterparts are consistent with being massive galaxies. The angular
extent of the FR sources exhibits a strong correlation with the cluster-centric
radius, which warrants further investigation with a larger sample.Comment: accepted to Ap
PPARĪ“ status and mismatch repair mediated neoplasia in the mouse intestine
BACKGROUND: Therapeutic regulation of PPARĪ“ activity using selective agonists has been proposed for various disorders. However, the consequences of altered peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta (PPARĪ“) activity in the context of intestinal tumourigenesis remain somewhat unclear. Contradictory evidence suggesting PPARĪ“ either attenuates or potentiates intestinal neoplasia. To further investigate the PPARĪ“ dependency of intestinal tumourigenesis, we have analysed the consequences of PPARĪ“ deficiency upon intestinal neoplasia occurring in mice with impaired mismatch DNA repair. METHODS: Mice deficient for both PPARĪ“ and the mismatch repair gene Mlh1 were produced and the incidence and severity of intestinal neoplasia recorded. RESULTS: No significant differences between the control genotypes and the double mutant genotypes were recorded indicating that deficiency of PPARĪ“ does not modify impaired mismatch repair induced neoplasia. CONCLUSION: In contrast with the previously observed acceleration of intestinal neoplasia in the context of the Apc(Min/+ )mouse, PPARĪ“ deficiency does not alter the phenotype of mismatch repair deficiency. This data supports the notion that PPARĪ“ is not required for adenoma formation and indicate that any pro-tumourigenic effect of PPARĪ“ inactivation may be highly context dependent
Predicting university performance in psychology: the role of previous performance and discipline-specific knowledge
Recent initiatives to enhance retention and widen participation ensure it is crucial to understand the factors that predict students' performance during their undergraduate degree. The present research used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to test three separate models that examined the extent to which British Psychology students' A-level entry qualifications predicted: (1) their performance in years 1-3 of their Psychology degree, and (2) their overall degree performance. Students' overall A-level entry qualifications positively predicted performance during their first year and overall degree performance, but negatively predicted their performance during their third year. Additionally, and more specifically, students' A-level entry qualifications in Psychology positively predicted performance in the first year only. Such findings have implications for admissions tutors, as well as for students who have not studied Psychology before but who are considering applying to do so at university
Mapping pneumonia research: a systematic analysis of UK investments and published outputs 1997ā2013
BackgroundThe burden of pneumonia continues to be substantial, particularly among the poorest in global society. We describe here the trends for UK pneumonia R&D investment and published outputs, and correlate with 2013 global mortality.MethodsData related to awards to UK institutions for pneumonia research from 1997 to 2013 were systematically sourced and categorised by disease area and type of science. Investment was compared to mortality figures in 2010 and 2013 for pneumonia, tuberculosis and influenza. Investment was also compared to publication data.ResultsOf all infectious disease research between 2011 and 2013 (Ā£917.0 million), Ā£28.8 million (3.1%) was for pneumonia. This was an absolute and proportionate increase from previous time periods. Translational pneumonia research (33.3%) received increased funding compared with 1997ā2010 where funding was almost entirely preclinical (87.5%, here 30.9%), but high-burden areas such as paediatrics, elderly care and antimicrobial resistance received little investment. Annual investment remains volatile; publication temporal trends show a consistent increase. When comparing investment to global burden with a novel āinvestment by mortality observedā metric, tuberculosis (Ā£48.36) and influenza (Ā£484.21) receive relatively more funding than pneumonia (Ā£43.08), despite investment for pneumonia greatly increasing in 2013 compared to 2010 (Ā£7.39). Limitations include a lack of private sector data and the need for careful interpretation of the comparisons with burden, plus categorisation is subjective.ConclusionsThere has been a welcome increase for pneumonia funding awarded to UK institutions in 2011ā2013 compared with 1997ā2010, along with increases for more translational research. Published outputs relating to pneumonia rose steadily from 1997 to 2013. Investment relative to mortality for pneumonia has increased, but it remains low compared to other respiratory infections and clear inequities remain. Analyses that measure investments in pneumonia can provide an insight into funding trends and research gaps.Research in contextPneumonia continues to be a high-burden illness around the globe. This paper shows that although research funding is increasing in the UK (between 1997 and 2013), it remains poorly funded compared to other important respiratory infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and influenza. Publications about pneumonia have been steadily increasing over time, indicating continuing academic and clinical interest in the topic. Though global mortality of pneumonia is declining, it should still be an area of high priority for funders, policymakers and researchers
Evolution of structural and optical properties of ion-beam synthesized GaAsN nanostructures
We have investigated the evolution of structural and optical properties of GaAsN nanostructures synthesized by N ion implantation into epitaxial GaAs, followed by rapid thermal annealing. Transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction indicate the formation of nanometer-sized crystallites with lattice parameters close to those of pure zincblende GaN. The average crystallite size increases with annealing temperature while the size distribution is self-similar and the volume fraction remains constant, suggesting a coarsening process governed by Ostwald ripening. These GaAsN nanostructures exhibit significant photoluminescence in the near infrared range. The apparent lowering of the fundamental band gap is likely due to the incorporation of a small amount of As in GaN.
