    Pathways into services for offenders with intellectual disabilities : childhood experience, diagnostic information and offence variables

    The patterns and pathways into intellectual disability (ID) offender services were studied through case file review for 477 participants referred in one calendar year to community generic, community forensic, and low, medium, and maximum secure services. Data were gathered on referral source, demographic information, index behavior, prior problem behaviors, diagnostic information, and abuse or deprivation. Community referrers tended to refer to community services and secure service referrers to secure services. Physical and verbal violence were the most frequent index behaviors, whereas contact sexual offenses were more prominent in maximum security. Age at first incident varied with security, with the youngest in maximum secure services. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or conduct disorder was the most frequently recorded diagnosis, and severe deprivation was the most frequent adverse developmental experience. Fire starting, theft, and road traffic offenses did not feature prominently. Generic community services accepted a number of referrals with forensic-type behavior and had higher proportions of both women and people with moderate or severe ID

    Non-detection of a statistically anisotropic power spectrum in large-scale structure

    We search a sample of photometric luminous red galaxies (LRGs) measured by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) for a quadrupolar anisotropy in the primordial power spectrum, in which P(\vec{k}) is an isotropic power spectrum P(k) multiplied by a quadrupolar modulation pattern. We first place limits on the 5 coefficients of a general quadrupole anisotropy. We also consider axisymmetric quadrupoles of the form P(\vec{k}) = P(k){1 + g_*[(\hat{k}\cdot\hat{n})^2-1/3]} where \hat{n} is the axis of the anisotropy. When we force the symmetry axis \hat{n} to be in the direction (l,b)=(94 degrees,26 degrees) identified in the recent Groeneboom et al. analysis of the cosmic microwave background, we find g_*=0.006+/-0.036 (1 sigma). With uniform priors on \hat{n} and g_* we find that -0.41<g_*<+0.38 with 95% probability, with the wide range due mainly to the large uncertainty of asymmetries aligned with the Galactic Plane. In none of these three analyses do we detect evidence for quadrupolar power anisotropy in large scale structure.Comment: 23 pages; 10 figures; 3 tables; replaced with version published in JCAP (added discussion of scale-varying quadrupolar anisotropy

    Probing Sub-Micron Forces by Interferometry of Bose-Einstein Condensed Atoms

    We propose a technique, using interferometry of Bose-Einstein condensed alkali atoms, for the detection of sub-micron-range forces. It may extend present searches at 1 micron by 6 to 9 orders of magnitude, deep into the theoretically interesting regime of 1000 times gravity.     Light-flavor sea-quark distributions in the nucleon in the SU(3) chiral quark soliton model (I) -- phenomenological predictions --

    Theoretical predictions are given for the light-flavor sea-quark distributions including the strange quark ones on the basis of the flavor SU(3) version of the chiral quark soliton model. Careful account is taken here of the SU(3) symmetry breaking effects due to the mass difference between the strange and nonstrange quarks. This effective mass difference Δms\Delta m_s between the strange and nonstrange quarks is the only one parameter necessary for the flavor SU(3) generalization of the model. A particular emphasis of study is put on the {\it light-flavor sea-quark asymmetry} as exemplified by the observables dˉ(x)uˉ(x),dˉ(x)/uˉ(x),Δuˉ(x)Δdˉ(x)\bar{d} (x) - \bar{u} (x), \bar{d} (x) / \bar{u} (x), \Delta \bar{u} (x) - \Delta \bar{d} (x) as well as on the {\it particle-antiparticle asymmetry} of the strange quark distributions represented by s(x)sˉ(x),s(x)/sˉ(x),Δs(x)Δsˉ(x)s (x) - \bar{s} (x), s (x) / \bar{s} (x), \Delta s (x) - \Delta \bar{s} (x) etc. As for the unpolarized sea-quark distributions, the predictions of the model seem qualitatively consistent with the available phenomenological information provided by the NMC data for dˉ(x)uˉ(x)\bar{d} (x) - \bar{u} (x), the E866 data for dˉ(x)/uˉ(x)\bar{d} (x) / \bar{u} (x), the CCFR data and Barone et al.'s fit for s(x)/sˉ(x)s (x) / \bar{s} (x) etc. The model is shown to give several unique predictions also for the spin-dependent sea-quark distribution, such that Δs(x)Δsˉ(x)0\Delta s (x) \ll \Delta \bar{s}(x) \lesssim 0 and Δdˉ(x)<0<Δuˉ(x)\Delta \bar{d}(x) < 0 < \Delta \bar{u}(x), although the verification of these predictions must await more elaborate experimental investigations in the near future.Comment: 36 pages, 20 EPS figures.     Interferon-γ induced expression of MHC antigens facilitates identification of donor cells in chimeric transplant recipients

    After whole organ transplantation, donor bone marrow-derived cells migrate out of the graft into the recipient, leading to establishment of chimerism, which is the first step towards the subsequent induction of donor-specific tolerance. In routine immunohistochemical staining, monoclonal antibodies specific for heterotopic MHC alleles are used to identify donor and recipient cells. However, it is difficult to detect these cells using this technique in long-term allograft recipients who have a persistently low donor cell population (microchimerism). Because Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) is known to induce expression of MHC class I and class II cell surface molecules, we used this cytokine 12-48 h before sacrifice, to facilitate the identification of donor and recipient cells in the tissues of animals transplanted with either liver (B10 → C3H) or bone marrow (LEW → BN). In long-term allograft recipients, the use of IFN-γ for as briefly as 12 h prior to sacrifice, results in marked upregulation of class I and class II antigens, leading to easy identification of ubiquitously distributed low numbers of donor cells. © 1994
