    Parent training for disruptive behavior symptoms in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a randomized clinical trial

    BackgroundAttention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects 5% of children and 2.5% of adults worldwide. Comorbidities are frequent, and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) reaches 50%. Family environment is crucial for the severity of behaviors and for prognosis. In middle-income countries, access to treatment is challenging, with more untreated children than those under treatment. Face-to-face behavioral parent training (PT) is a well-established intervention to improve child behavior and parenting.MethodA clinical trial was designed to compare PT-online and face-to-face effects to a waiting list group. Outcomes were the ADHD and ODD symptoms, parental stress and styles, and quality of life. Families were allocated into three groups: standard treatment (ST), ST + PT online, and ST + Face-to-Face PT. We used repeated measures ANOVA for pre × post treatment analysis corrected for multiple comparisons.Results and discussionParent training was effective in reducing symptoms of ADHD (p = 0.030) and ODD (p = 0.026) irrespective of modality (p = 1.000). The combination of ST and PT was also associated with better quality of life in the physical domain for patients (p = 0.009) and their parents (p = 0.050). In addition to preliminary data, online intervention seems effective for parenting and improving social acceptance of children. The potential to reach many by an online strategy with a self-directed platform may imply effectiveness with a low cost for public health to support parents’ symptoms management

    ATLANTIC EPIPHYTES: a data set of vascular and non-vascular epiphyte plants and lichens from the Atlantic Forest

    Epiphytes are hyper-diverse and one of the frequently undervalued life forms in plant surveys and biodiversity inventories. Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set with information on abundance and occurrence of epiphyte phorophyte species. All data compiled here come from three main sources provided by the authors: published sources (comprising peer-reviewed articles, books, and theses), unpublished data, and herbarium data. We compiled a data set composed of 2,095 species, from 89,270 holo/hemiepiphyte records, in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recorded from 1824 to early 2018. Most of the records were from qualitative data (occurrence only, 88%), well distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest. For quantitative records, the most common sampling method was individual trees (71%), followed by plot sampling (19%), and transect sampling (10%). Angiosperms (81%) were the most frequently registered group, and Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae were the families with the greatest number of records (27,272 and 21,945, respectively). Ferns and Lycophytes presented fewer records than Angiosperms, and Polypodiaceae were the most recorded family, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non-vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non-vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. We hope that our effort to organize scattered epiphyte data help advance the knowledge of epiphyte ecology, as well as our understanding of macroecological and biogeographical patterns in the Atlantic Forest.     Cross-cultural adaptation, validity, and reliability of the Child and Adolescent Behavior Inventory (CABI) for use in Brazil

    Objective: The Child and Adolescent Behavior Inventory (CABI) is a cost-free 75 question-questionnaire developed by an Italian group to collect information from parents on the behavior of children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 years. It assesses different areas of children's behavior and psychopathology, including internalizing and externalizing symptoms, and can be used to identify children at risk of mental disorders both in clinical and epidemiological settings. In this study, the authors present a Brazilian-Portuguese adaptation of the CABI and its psychometric properties. Methods: First, the authors conducted a rigorous transcultural adaptation of CABI's questions and instructions for the Brazilian context. In an online sample of 598 parents, the authors found high reliability (internal consistency) for the CABI's main subscales. Results: Validity was supported by exploratory factor analysis (the authors found 6 factors representing several aspects of psychopathology both according to the DSM and HiTop models) and significant differences in most CABI's subscales between children with parent-reported psychopathology and typically developing ones. The present study suggests that the adapted version of CABI is a valid and reliable measure that can be used in Brazil. Conclusions: The CABI can be useful to the pediatrician to get fast but wide information from parents on the behavioral condition of their children or adolescents, and also to decide whether it is appropriate to consult a mental health professional

    This paper presents a method to evaluate the hydrologic inconsistencies in terrain represented by digital elevation model. The method compares the drainage network automatically obtained from the terrain with a reference network. The differences obtained are quantified to determine the difference between the two networks. Basically, the network evaluation consists in comparing the corresponding rivers to compute the differences in the river length, direction, mouth, etc. The rivers correspondence is determined based on the otto codification which classifies the rivers using numeric codes based on some characteristics such as the drainage area, the river length, etc.Pages: 5225-523

    ADHD inattentive symptoms mediate the relationship between intelligence and academic performance in children aged 6-14

    Objective: Fluid intelligence and the behavioral problems of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are related to academic performance, but how this association occurs is unclear. This study aimed to assess mediation and moderation models that test possible pathways of influence between these factors. Methods: Sixty-two children with ADHD and 33 age-matched, typically developing students were evaluated with Raven's Colored Progressive Matrices and the spelling and arithmetic subtests of the Brazilian School Achievement Test. Dimensional ADHD symptomatology was reported by parents. Results: Our findings suggest that fluid intelligence has a significant impact on academic tests through inattention. The inattentive dimension was the principal behavioral source of influence, also accounting for the association of hyperactive-impulsive manifestations with school achievement. This cognitive-to-behavioral influence path seems to be independent of diagnosis related group, and gender, but lower socioeconomic status might increase its strength. Conclusion: Fluid intelligence is a relevant factor in the influence of ADHD behavioral symptoms on academic performance, but its impact is indirect. Therefore, early identification of both fluid intelligence and inattentive symptoms is of the utmost importance to prevent impaired academic performance and future difficulties in functioning

    Conteúdo fenólico e atividade antioxidante de diferentes cultivares de ipomoea batatas (l.) lam. obtidas por melhoramento genético para produção industrial de etanol

    A batata-doce (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) é um vegetal nativo da América Tropical, com destaque no cenário da agricultura mundial. A principal finalidade do cultivo desta planta concentra-se na obtenção de raízes para alimentação humana, de animais domésticos e produção de etanol. A preferência de consumo de I. batatas concentra-se nas raízes, consequentemente a parte aérea, na maioria das vezes, é descartada ou fornecida como alimento para animais. Este trabalho teve como objetivo determinar o conteúdo fenólico total, o perfil cromatográfico e o potencial antioxidante das folhas de 10 cultivares de I. batatas provenientes de melhoramento genético convencional direcionado para a produção industrial de etanol. Extratos etanólicos das folhas de plantas adultas foram avaliados quanto ao conteúdo fenólico pelo método Folin-Ciocalteu, que variou entre 54,72 ± 4,35 e 112,29 ± 3,65 mg EAT/g, flavonoides por complexação com cloreto de alumínio (29,15 ± 3,72 a 97,36 ± 2,13 mg ER/g), atividade antioxidante in vitro pelos métodos DPPH, FRAP e atividade quelante. Adicionalmente, foram investigados os componentes fenólicos por cromatografia em camada delgada (CCD) e cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência (CLAE), que revelaram matrizes complexas de compostos, constituídas por ácido elágico e vários flavonoides. Constatou-se um elevado potencial antioxidante correlacionado satisfatoriamente pelo coeficiente de Pearson com teor de fenóis e flavonoides totais. Os resultados demonstraram grande potencial de agregação de valor ao cultivo de I. batatas, pela integração das práticas agroenergéticas que utilizam suas raízes, com a obtenção de outros produtos de base orgânica presentes nas folhas desta planta
