    Effects of Large-Scale Land Acquisition on Livelihood Assets in the Pru East District of Ghana

    The activities of multi-national companies have affected the livelihood of smallholder farmer in the Pru East, though a lot of research work has been done on large scale land acquisition but this study focus on how it affects livelihood asset of smallholder farmers in the Pru East District. Over the past ten years, the Government of Ghana have leased out large tracts of land for investors, mainly foreign investors. Survey research approach was used for the study. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed and a sample size of 332 households was used for the study. The study used five indicators of the Livelihood Effect Index (LEI) espoused by Downing et al., (2001) to determine the effects of large-scale land acquisition on the livelihood of smallholder farming households. Large scale land acquisition has a significant positive moderate effect on the employment, healthcare and food security but, has a significant negative high effect on income levels of smallholder farming households. However, large scale land acquisition has no significant effect on the nutritional status of farming households in the Pru East district of the Bono East region. Kobre and Kadue communities with an LEI of 0.53 suggests that livelihoods of farming households in these two communities are the most effected with large scale land acquisition. The study also recommends that MMDAs must formulate by-laws to ensure that large scale land investors employ people from the host communities of the projects.     Pathogenicity and fungicide sensitivity of the causal agent of postharvest stem end rot disease of mango in Ghana

    ABSTRACTStudies were carried out on the stem end rot disease of mango in Ghana. The incidence and severity of the disease were evaluated on mango fruits collected from major mango growing areas of Ghana. The causal agent was isolated on media and identified. The pathogenicity of the fungus and its cross-infection potential were determined on mango, avocado, papaya and banana fruits. The sensitivity of the pathogen to fungicides was determined by assessing radial mycelial growth on potato dextrose agar (PDA) amended with nine different fungicides (Bendazim, Funguran, Ivory, Topsin, Asuoku master, Kocide, Mirage, Sulphur 80 and Copper oxychloride). Stem end rot disease was prevalent in the major mango growing areas of Ghana. Two pathogens, Lasiodiplodia theobromae and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides were isolated from the disease lesions. However, only the former was able to cause stem end rot disease symptoms on the artificially inoculated fruits, confirming it as the causal agent of the disease. It was also found to be highly susceptible to Bendazim, Ivory, Topsin, Asuoku master and Mirage, whilst it was resistant to Funguran, Kocide, Sulphur 80 and Copper oxychloride.Original sciencitic paper.     Antithrombin-III Mitigates Thrombin-Mediated Endothelial Cell Contraction and Sickle Red Blood Cell Adhesion in Microscale Flow

    Individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) have persistently elevated thrombin generation that results in a state of systemic hypercoagulability. Antithrombin-III (ATIII), an endogenous serine protease inhibitor, inhibits several enzymes in the coagulation cascade, including thrombin. Here, we utilize a biomimetic microfluidic device to model the morphology and adhesive properties of endothelial cells (ECs) activated by thrombin and examine the efficacy of ATIII in mitigating the adhesion of SCD patient-derived red blood cells (RBCs) and EC retraction. Microfluidic devices were fabricated, seeded with ECs, and incubated under physiological shear stress. Cells were then activated with thrombin with or without an ATIII pretreatment. Blood samples from subjects with normal haemoglobin (HbAA) and subjects with homozygous SCD (HbSS) were used to examine RBC adhesion to ECs. Endothelial cell surface adhesion molecule expression and confluency in response to thrombin and ATIII treatments were also evaluated. We found that ATIII pretreatment of ECs reduced HbSS RBC adhesion to thrombin-activated endothelium. Furthermore, ATIII mitigated cellular contraction and reduced surface expression of von Willebrand factor and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) mediated by thrombin. Our findings suggest that, by attenuating thrombin-mediated EC damage and RBC adhesion to endothelium, ATIII may alleviate the thromboinflammatory manifestations of SCD

    Social security and national insurance trust of Ghana annual reports: a readability analysis

    The aim of annual reports is to give shareholders and other interested people information about a company’s activities and financial performance. The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) of Ghana churns out annual reports on yearly basis. But some of the annual reports are likely to be more difficult to understand than others and may not be effective if the reader is unable to completely comprehend the contents. Yet, nothing is known about the readability of annual reports produced by SSNIT. Hence, this paper attempts to evaluate the readability of annual reports of SSNIT and establish the trend in readability, covering a period of years (from 2011 to 2015). SMOG readability index was used to compute readability scores and descriptive statistics and ANOVA were used to analyse the data. The results indicate that the annual reports of SSNIT were generally very difficult to comprehend. In addition, the study showed that the readability level of all annual reports was similar. The trend indicates a deterioration in readability of the annual reports over the five-year period. The researcher recommends that authors of the report use plain language to enhance ease in the understanding of the reports.KEYWORDS: SSNIT, annual report, readability, Ghana, SMO

    Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of Jerusalem artichoke tuber bio-active ingredient using optimized conditions of Box-Behnken response surface methodology

    The method of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was utilized to extract polyphenols from Jerusalem artichokes tuber (JAT). To determine the ideal values for ultrasound power (UP), extraction time (ET), and temperature (TP), a response surface methodology was utilized. JAT extracts were prepared using UAE and their content of total flavonoids (TFC), total polyphenols (TPC), ferric reducing-antioxidant activity (FRAP), and 2, 2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) were determined. Accordingly, optimal settings were obtained where TP = 80.0 °C, ET = 14.99 min, and UP = 99.2 °C. These conditions caused TPC, TFC, FRAP, and % DPPH values to reach 4163.6 mg GAE/kg, 2731.6 mg RE/kg, 2.16 mmol/L, and 85.2% respectively, with general-desirability values of 1.00. In addition, DPPH (R = 0.950) and FRAP (R = 0.962) correlated with TPC, indicating that TPC contributed significantly to antioxidant activity.     Full versions of all four of the special issues are available, open-access through the CCEAM website – www.cceam.netFollowing the government directive to close schools in March 2020, a meeting of the academic leadership of Ashesi University devised a 360-degree response to the COVID-19 pandemic with decision making underpinned by simplicity and flexibility. The Admissions Department, supported by Student Life, led the evacuation and safe return home of all students, with students with challenging situations placed in homes the week of the announcement. Concurrently, the Academic Affairs team suspended all regular activities for two weeks, and with the assistance of the Operations and IT teams, developed the operational response plan, piloted the following week. Faculty and Academic Affairs stressed best practices, and in response to Student Life, emphasised the quality of instruction over quantity; rigour and higher-order thinking over the amount of learning. Pursuance of quality assurance was through weekly and clear master plans on teaching. Student Life, Admissions, and Academic Affairs used a devised student activity sheet to provide support to students to mitigate attrition, which was less than 0.2 per cent at the end of the semester. They regularly engaged students in virtual town hall meetings. Parents were included in students’ study needs and invited to visit classes. Vendors for the grounds, cafeteria, security and cleaning services have been supported during this period. Most faculty and students have begun to enjoy the online teaching and learning experience with no request for a tuition refund, but rather, high student demand for summer school.Ashesi Universit

    Quality evaluation of orange-fleshed sweet potato-pineapple blended jam

    This research aimed to develop a jam using orange-fleshed sweet potato puree (OFSPP) and pineapple pulp (PP) and to assess nutritional, gelling, sensory, and microbiological qualities. Four jam formulations of OFSPP: PP (70%:30, 50%:50%, and 30%:70) and 100% PP were developed and evaluated. Increasing the level of OFSPP resulted in a significant (P<0.05) decrease in moisture content (34.39–23.70%), but increased the fat (0.16–0.18%), ash (0.35–0.40%), protein (0.93–1.57%), and carbohydrates (61.70–67.69%) content. The concentration of β–carotene decreased with a reducing OFSPP fraction (P<0.05). After 12 weeks of storage, the 50% OFSPP and 50% pineapple jam had a total plate count of 4.50 CFU/g, although coliform and mould were not present in all the processed jam samples. The mixed jam with 50% OFSPP: 50% PP had a higher sensory acceptance. These results indicate that food processors could develop OFSP-PP jams as a β–carotene enriched functional food

    We conducted a screen for glossy-eye flies that fail to incorporate BrdU in the third larval instar eye disc but exhibit normal neuronal differentiation and isolated 23 complementation groups of mutants. These same phenotypes were previously seen in mutants for cytochrome c oxidase subunit Va. We have molecularly characterized six complementation groups and, surprisingly, each encodes a mitochondrial protein. Therefore, we believe our screen to be an efficient method for identifying genes with mitochondrial function
