Linking plant phenology to conservation biology

Phenology has achieved a prominent position in current scenarios of global change research given its role inmonitoring and predicting the timing of recurrent life cycle events. However, the implications of phenology to environmental conservation and management remain poorly explored. Here,we present the first explicit appraisal of howphenology-amultidisciplinary science encompassing biometeorology, ecology, and evolutionary biology- can make a key contribution to contemporary conservation biology. We focus on shifts in plant phenology induced by global change, their impacts on species diversity and plant-animal interactions in the tropics, and how conservation efforts could be enhanced in relation to plant resource organization. We identify the effects of phenological changes and mismatches in the maintenance and conservation of mutualistic interactions, and examine how phenological research can contribute to evaluate, manage and mitigate the consequences of land-use change and other natural and anthropogenic disturbances, such as fire, exotic and invasive species. Wealso identify cutting-edge tools that can improve the spatial and temporal coverage of phenological monitoring, from satellites to drones and digital cameras. We highlight the role of historical information in recovering long-term phenological time series, and track climate-related shifts in tropical systems. Finally, we propose a set of measures to boost the contribution of phenology to conservation science.Weadvocate the inclusion of phenology into predictive models integrating evolutionary history to identify species groups that are either resilient or sensitive to future climate-change scenarios, and understand how phenological m ismatches can affect community dynamics, ecosystem services, and conservation over time

Myelitis or transverse myelopathy. A case presentation.

Here is presented a brief information about the most relevant aspects of myelitis or transverse myelopathy, a syndrome of low frequency rates in our medical experience with intensive care, along with an assisted case in our clinic intensive therapy service. The patient was subjected to the diverse complementary tests, necessary for the diagnosis, and she received established treatment for this process, and so for the complications presented. It was proved a fulminant ascendant myelitis with unfavourable fast evolution

    Scleroderma. A case presentation.

This article presents a brief review about generalized sclerosis (sclerodermia ) and reports a case with such disease talking into consideration that the patient received clinical intensive care assistaance and had a clinical diagnosis supoported by lab test for a clinical and differential diagnosis. Medical treatment was applied for the disease and for the possible complications, but the patients follow up was wrong due to multi organ failure as a consequence of derlying disease

Vibrio vulnificus specie isolation in series blood culture. A case report.

    No full text
This papers contains a report of a case with Vibrio vulnificuls, gram negative micro organism that ferments carbohydrates and that is positive to the oxidase test and halophile in a patient with history of heart and liver disease who was assisted at the Intensive Care Emergency Unit ( ICU )of the ¨Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima¨ University Hospital in July 2003. Thy symptoms were: oedema in lower limbs, orthopnea, chest pain that was interpreted as a case of pneumonia and a Myocardial Infarction. This patient progresses rapidly to cardiac arrest, is reanimated , and is admitted at the ICU with control pressuremetric ventilation. Vibrio Vulnificuls was isolated with a conventional diagnosis from hemo cultures. Anti microbial Susceptibility tests , the micro organism was susceptible to tetracycline, sulphaprim, aztreonam, ampicillin and was resistant to chloranphenicol.</span
