    Morphology in transition: Plural inflection of Finnish nouns by Estonian and Russian learners

    The paper explores the nature of cross-linguistic influence in morphology. 30 Estonian (a closely related L1) and 30 Russian (a non-related L1) beginning and advanced learners of L2 Finnish were tested for their skills in nominal inflection in three different tasks: separate nouns of morphophonologically varying inflectional categories to be inflected in several plural case forms in writing, the same nouns to be used in a narrative writing task and in an oral inflection task. The nouns were selected to represent various degrees of inflectional and/or semantic similarity between Finnish and Estonian (for Russian no such similarity exists). The results indicate that—in opposition to what has been previously claimed—not only does cross-linguistic influence exist within the domain of morphology but it also varies systematically across inflectional categories and between groups at different levels of general skills in Finnish

    This paper deals with the relevance of the comparison of linguistic structures of source and target languages in second language acquisition research, focusing on one of the key issues of the research area: cross-linguistic infl uence. The paper has two aims: 1) to describe the applications of the comparison of linguistic structures within a unifi ed methodological framework for investigating cross-linguistic infl uence, and 2) to discuss the advantages and restrictions of diff erent types of comparative data. The fi rst sections establish the background by providing a brief overview of the history of comparative research and by focusing on the research project The grammatical comparison of Finnish and Estonian and on its importance in the history of Estonian and Finnish linguistics. The applications of a comparison of linguistic structures as intralingual contrasts are exemplifi ed by the acquisition of Finnish infl ectional morphology by Estonian and Russian learners.     Most of corpus-based studies of learner language have been completed in the framework of error analysis and have focused mainly on the learners’ products, while learners’ production processes have been less researched. This article deals with some problems and limitations of corpus-based error analysis of learner language. The problems of classification and interpretation as well as the psycholinguistic reality of errors are discussed on the bases of word order errors of Russian learners of Estonian. Some complementary possibilities enabling the researcher to investigate learners’ production process are proposed: introspective methods such as psycholinguistic perceptual tests, thinking aloud-method, retrospective interviews and language technology software such as ScriptLog-program.The article also presents some results of a preliminary study on psycholinguistic reality of some word order patterns of Estonian from the point of view of Russian learners of Estonian as well as from that of native Estonian speakers. The following word order patterns are discussed: 1) adverbialsubject-predicate-object, 2) adverbial-predicate-subject-object, 3) subject-object-adverbial-object, 4) object-predicate-subjectadverbial. The study concludes that the main differences in perception of the Estonian native speakers and the Russian learners of Estonian concerned V2-rule: the pattern adverbialpredicate-subject-object was perceived as natural by most of  Estonian native speakers and the pattern adverbial-subjectpredicate-object was mostly perceived as unnatural. For most of the Russian learners the pattern adverbial-subject-predicate object was quite natural or nearly natural.
