    Integration of organic poultry in whole farm systems: manure nutrient budgets

    This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. The aim of this project was to examine how rotations incorporating organic poultry use the cycling of nutrients between soil, crops and birds. Poultry studies have measured nutrient values of manure in slow growing meat birds at about day 81 when fed typical broiler rations versus “Label Rouge” rations. Nutrient (N, P, K) balances were constructed to assess the viability of integrating poultry production within a theoretical organic rotation. The readilyplant- available nitrogen in manure from Ross 308 birds fed either presumed non-limiting rations or Label Rouge rations was within the range reported for intensive broilers. For ISA 657 birds, the manure readily-plant-available nitrogen was similar to the mean value reported for broilers, when fed presumed non limiting rations, but towards the lower range when fed Label Rouge rations. As breed growth and feed intakes differ it is suggested that to optimise the utilisation of nutrients, the nutrient content of table bird manures should be checked prior to land application. The nutrient budgets were similar for N and P regardless of the length of rotation or form of poultry production. On average, there was a surplus of 85 kg/ha N over all the scenarios.     Photon number states generated from a continuous-wave light source

    Conditional preparation of photon number states from a continuous-wave nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator is investigated. We derive the phase space Wigner function for the output state conditioned on photo detection events that are not necessarily simultaneous, and we maximize its overlap with the desired photon number state by choosing the optimal temporal output state mode function. We present a detailed numerical analysis for the case of two-photon state generation from a parametric oscillator driven with an arbitrary intensity below threshold, and in the low intensity limit, we present a formalism that yields the optimal output state mode function and fidelity for higher photon number states.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, v2: shortened versio

    A Weakly Nonlinear Analysis of Impulsively-Forced Faraday Waves

    Parametrically-excited surface waves, forced by a periodic sequence of delta-function impulses, are considered within the framework of the Zhang-Vi\~nals model (J. Fluid Mech. 1997). The exact impulsive-forcing results, in the linear and weakly nonlinear regimes, are compared with numerical results for sinusoidal and multifrequency forcing. We find surprisingly good agreement between impulsive forcing results and those obtained using a two-term truncated Fourier series representation of the impulsive forcing function. As noted previously by Bechhoefer and Johnson (Am. J. Phys. 1996), in the case of two equally-spaced impulses per period there are only subharmonic modes of instability. The familiar situation of alternating subharmonic and harmonic resonance tongues emerges for unequally-spaced impulses. We extend the linear analysis for two impulses per period to the weakly nonlinear regime for one-dimensional waves. Specifically, we derive an analytic expression for the cubic Landau coefficient in the bifurcation equation as a function of the dimensionless fluid parameters and spacing between the two impulses. As the capillary parameter is varied, one finds a parameter region of wave amplitude suppression, which is due to a familiar 1:2 spatio-temporal resonance between the subharmonic mode of instability and a damped harmonic mode. This resonance occurs for impulsive forcing even when harmonic resonance tongues are absent from the neutral stability curve. The strength of this resonance feature can be tuned by varying the spacing between the impulses. This finding is interpreted in terms of a recent symmetry-based analysis of multifrequency forced Faraday waves by Porter, Topaz and Silber (Phys. Rev. Lett. 2004, Phys. Rev.     A MIXED-INTEGER PROGRAMMING ANALYSIS OF THE STRUCTURE OF A FLORIDA-BASED CATTLE FEEDING INDUSTRY

    Florida is typical of many southeastern states in that it exports feeder cattle and imports carcass and boxed beef. The objective of this paper is to estimate the cost of retaining feeder cattle in Florida, feeding these cattle to slaughter weights, slaughtering them, and distributing the meat to retail outlets. A mixed integer programming model is developed. The optimal number and location of feedlots and slaughter plants are determined. The results indicate that at production levels exceeding 600,000 head, the cost of producing carcass beef in the State is comparable to the average for the United States.Livestock Production/Industries,

    Simulation of a particle-laden turbulent channel flow using an improved stochastic Lagrangian model

    The purpose of this paper is to examine the Lagrangian stochastic modeling of the fluid velocity seen by inertial particles in a nonhomogeneous turbulent flow. A new Langevin-type model, compatible with the transport equation of the drift velocity in the limits of low and high particle inertia, is derived. It is also shown that some previously proposed stochastic models are not compatible with this transport equation in the limit of high particle inertia. The drift and diffusion parameters of these stochastic differential equations are then estimated using direct numerical simulation (DNS) data. It is observed that, contrary to the conventional modeling, they are highly space dependent and anisotropic. To investigate the performance of the present stochastic model, a comparison is made with DNS data as well as with two different stochastic models. A good prediction of the first and second order statistical moments of the particle and fluid seen velocities is obtained with the three models considered. Even for some components of the triple particle velocity correlations, an acceptable accordance is noticed. The performance of the three different models mainly diverges for the particle concentration and the drift velocity. The proposed model is seen to be the only one which succeeds in predicting the good evolution of these latter statistical quantities for the range of particle inertia studied

    Attentional avoidance of high-fat food in unsuccessful dieters

    Using the exogenous cueing task, this study examined whether restrained and disinhibited eaters differ in their orientation of attention towards and their difficulty to disengage from high versus low-fat food pictures in a relatively short (500 ms) and a long presentation format (1500 ms). Overall, participants in the 500 ms condition showed a tendency to direct attention away from high-fat food pictures compared to neutral pictures. No differential pattern was evident for the 1500 ms condition. Correlational analysis revealed that reduced engagement with high-fat food was particularly pronounced for disinhibited eaters. Although in the short term this seems an adaptive strategy, it may eventually become counterproductive, as it could hinder habituation and learning to cope with seductive characteristics of high-fat food.     The QUEST Data Processing Software Pipeline

    A program that we call the QUEST Data Processing Software Pipeline has been written to process the large volumes of data produced by the QUEST camera on the Samuel Oschin Schmidt Telescope at the Palomar Observatory. The program carries out both aperture and PSF photometry, combines data from different repeated observations of the same portion of sky, and produces a Master Object Catalog. A rough calibration of the data is carried out. This program, as well as the calibration procedures and quality checks on the output are described.Comment: 17 pages, 1 table, 8 figure

    Fluctuations of the Casimir-like force between two membrane inclusions

    Although Casimir forces are inseparable from their fluctuations, little is known about these fluctuations in soft matter systems. We use the membrane stress tensor to study the fluctuations of the membrane-mediated Casimir-like force. This method enables us to recover the Casimir force between two inclusions and to calculate its variance. We show that the Casimir force is dominated by its fluctuations. Furthermore, when the distance d between the inclusions is decreased from infinity, the variance of the Casimir force decreases as -1/d^2. This distance dependence shares a common physical origin with the Casimir force itself.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    The major gaseous components of the exhaust of stratospheric aircraft are expected to be the products of combustion (CO2 and H2O), odd nitrogen (NO, NO2 HNO3), and products indicating combustion inefficiencies (CO and total unburned hydrocarbons). The species distributions are produced by a balance of photochemical and transport processes. A necessary element in evaluating the impact of aircraft exhaust on the lower stratospheric composition is to place the aircraft emissions in perspective within the natural cycles of stratospheric species.
