Natural ventilation systems to enhance sustainability in buildings: a review towards zero energy buildings in schools

    Get PDF
European regulations set the condition of Zero Energy Buildings for new buildings since 2020, with an intermediate milestone in 2018 for public buildings, in order to control greenhouse gases emissions control and climate change mitigation. Given that main fraction of energy consumption in buildings operation is due to HVAC systems, advances in its design and operation conditions are required. One key element for energy demand control is passive design of buildings. On this purpose, different recent studies and publications analyse natural ventilation systems potential to provide indoor air quality and comfort conditions minimizing electric power consumption. In these passive systems are of special relevance their capacities as passive cooling systems as well as air renovation systems, especially in high-density occupied spaces. With adequate designs, in warm/mild climates natural ventilation systems can be used along the whole year, maintaining indoor air quality and comfort conditions with small support of other heating/cooling systems. In this paper is analysed the state of the art of natural ventilation systems applied to high density occupied spaces with special focus on school buildings. The paper shows the potential and applicability of these systems for energy savings and discusses main criteria for their adequate integration in school building designs

Digital Heritage Gamification: An Augmented-Virtual Walkthrough to Learn and Explore Tangible Cultural Heritage

    Get PDF
In the last decade, cultural heritage including historical sites are reconstructed into digital heritage. Based on UNESCO , digital heritage defines as “cultural, educational, scientific and administrative resources, as well as technical, legal, medical and other kinds of information created digitally, or converted into digital form from existing analogue resources”. In addition, the digital heritage is doubling in size every two years and expected will grow tenfold between 2013 and 2020. In order to attract and stir the interest of younger generations about digital heritage, gamification has been widely promoted. In this research, a virtual walkthrough combine with gamifications are proposed for learning and exploring historical places in Malaysia by using mobile device. In conjunction with Visit Perak 2017 Campaign, this virtual walkthrough is proposed for Kellie’s Castle at Perak. The objectives of this research are two folds 1) modelling and design of innovative mobile game for virtual walkthrough application, and 2) to attract tourist to explore and learn historical places by using sophisticated graphics from Augmented Reality. The efficiency and effectiveness of the mobile virtual walkthrough will be accessed by the International and local tourists. In conclusion, this research is speculated to be pervasively improve the cultural and historical knowledge of the learners

Genetic diversity and population structure of Pseudomonas savastanoi, an endemic pathogen of the Mediterranean area, revealed up to strain level by the MLVA assay

© 2020, Società Italiana di Patologia Vegetale (S.I.Pa.V.). Pseudomonas savastanoi is a bacterial species included in the Pseudomonas syringae complex. It is further sub-typed in pathovars which are the causal agents of a group of diseases of woody plants, such as the “knot disease” on olive and oleander and the bacterial canker on ash. Given its long-established presence in the Mediterranean area, the pathogen causing the afore-mentioned diseases can be considered endemic. Here, an MLVA approach was developed to assess the genetic relationships among and within those pathovars, with a specific focus on P. savastanoi pv. savastanoi. By analyzing the genome of the P.savastanoi pv. savastanoi strain NCPPB 3335 (accession n° CP008742), 14 Tandem Repeat (TR) loci were identified and the corresponding primers were designed and used for the amplification of genomic DNAs from 84 strains belonging to Pseudomonas savastanoi pathovars. Data were analyzed using different approaches, such as hierarchical clustering, STRUCTURE, and k-means clustering with DAPC to evaluate the effectiveness of the assay in describing pathovars and population structure of the pathogen. Results reveal a very complex articulation of genetic relationships, as expected from a long-time evolving pathogen, while providing the possibility to discriminate the pathovars between each other. At intra-pathovar level, the MLVA assay clusters isolates mainly according to their hosts and geographic origin. This resulted particularly useful in the identification and tracking of P. savastanoi populations at local level.11n

The Relationship between Computer Anxiety and Learning Styles (Sensory-intuitive and Verbal-visual) among Persian University Students

This study was conducted in central Iran among all first-year university students studying engineering courses at Arak University of Technology. All students (No = 310) were included in this study. Instruments used mostly consisted of a computer anxiety questionnaire plus a learning style questionnaire. The data was analyzed by both descriptive and inferential statistics (Mean, Frequency, Standard Deviations, Independent T-test as well as Point Biserial Correlation Coefficient). The results indicated that there was a statistically significant relationship between computer anxiety and sensory-intuitive learning styles, in that the students having sensory learning style suffered from computer anxiety more frequently than the student having intuitive learning styles. In addition, there was a statistically significant relationship between computer anxiety and verbal-visual learning style, given that the students having visual learning style suffered from computer anxiety more than the students having verbal learning style. No statistically significant relationship, however, was found between computer anxiety and gender
