Diversity of Seven Glutenin and Secalin Loci within Triticale Cultivars Grown in France

    No full text
Although the endosperm storage protein of hexaploid triticale have already been analysed, the allelic diversity of glutenins and secalins remains to be described. Analysis by SDS-PAGE of the majority of hexaploid triticales (69 cultivars) grown in France allowed to identify 36 alleles at seven loci: Glu-A1, Glu-B1, Glu-R1, Gli-R2, Glu-B2, Glu-A3 and Glu-B3. Glu-B1 and Glu-B3 loci were the most polymorphic with 9 alleles each. On the basis of allelic frequencies at the seven loci, genetic distances between hexaploid triticales grouped according to their origins revealed two groups: winter triticales mostly originating from European germplasm and spring triticales essentially of CIMMYT origin. Comparison of allele frequencies between hexaploid triticale cultivars and a world collection of bread (Triticum aestivum) and durum (Triticum durum) wheat was investigated at Glu-A1 and Glu-B1: only a significant association was found for Glu-A1 alleles (?2 = 2.26, p =0.36) between triticale and bread wheat

Session : NutritionFive varieties of triticale were grown under similar conditions. Phytase activity (1012 to 2146 PU / kg) displayeda significant genotypic effect. The efficacy of plant phytase to improve phosphorus (P) availability was assessedin chickens up to 3 weeks of age in twelve experimental diets: three maize (45%) and soybean meal (23%)based diets with 0, 1 or 2 g P / kg as monocalcium phosphate (MCP) and nine diets with no MCP in whichtriticale (45%) from four varieties, heated or not (including one partially heated), replaced maize. Phytaseactivity in the triticale based diets ranged between 135 to 1390 PU / kg. Growth performance and bone ash wereresponsive to plant phytase and to MCP. Non linear models of these responses were adjusted with the best fit forbone ash parameters. 250, 500 and 1000 PU of plant phytase were estimated to be equivalent to 0.46, 0.68 and0.81 g P as MCP, respectively. Introducing 45% of triticale in a plant feedstuffs based diets increases its phytaseactivity by 455 to 966 PU / kg and, in turn, prevents the supplementation of 0.6 to 0.8 g of P as MCP / kg diet.

Viscosity of triticale varieties differs in its response to temperature after flowering

Triticale produced to feed monogastric livestock needs to have a low potential applied viscosity (PAV). Five varieties were cultivated at nine locations (430-700 m a.s.l.) in Switzerland over three years. Six of the locations were sampled for at least two consecutive years, and PAV was related to meteorological data. The data was subjected to correlation and regression analysis, as well as a multiplicative model, to evaluate interactions. Extent and stability of PAV differed between experimental locations across all genotypes, notably between varieties and years, but also between single locations in the same year. Interactions between genotype and environment were responsible for up to 12% of the PAV variance. With the exception of one variety, PAV was negatively correlated with the cumulated mean temperatures over a 20-day period, starting on day 24 after heading. In these cases, temperature data explained the differences in PAV much better than precipitation did. By linear regression, PAV could be predicted from mean temperature during grain development and grain hardness at harvest for the four thermosensitive varieties. Two varieties were of particular interest, as they had either a favorably low PAV (Tridel) or a PAV resistant to environmental influences (Prader). A combination of these two traits could be used to create a type of triticale particularly suitable for livestock feeding
