Application of a hybrid generation/utility assessment heuristic to a class of scheduling problems

    Get PDF
A two-stage heuristic solution approach for a class of multiobjective, n-job, 1-machine scheduling problems is described. Minimization of job-to-job interference for n jobs is sought. The first stage generates alternative schedule sequences by interchanging pairs of schedule elements. The set of alternative sequences can represent nodes of a decision tree; each node is reached via decision to interchange job elements. The second stage selects the parent node for the next generation of alternative sequences through automated paired comparison of objective performance for all current nodes. An application of the heuristic approach to communications satellite systems planning is presented

The Narrow Room : A Critical Study of the Sonnet Sequences of Edna St. Vincent Millay

    Get PDF
The second decade of the twentieth century brought to American Literature a renaissance in poetry which affected not only the course of American letters bt also the course of American culture as well. The beginning of this renaissance is marked by the publication of the Lyric Year in 1912 which purported to be a collection of new, fresh, and arresting poems by contemporary poets, both known and obscure. In this volume and into this renaissance appeared the teen-aged Edna St. Vincent Millay with her youthful Renascence. Although the poem did not win a prize, over which there was an eruption of critical protest, readers almost unanimously rated it the freshest, the most original, and certainly the best in the volume. From this auspicious beginning Miss Millay\u27s presence was to be felt in American letters for the next forty years

Haley comments on the argument underlying the article by Erin Ann O\u27Hara and Maria Mayo Robbins, which emphasizes on victim-offender mediation (VOM). By expanding the frame of reference, restorative justice can be defined as a paradigm whose scope encompasses more than VOM and whose emphasis includes the needs of society and offenders as well as victims. Restorative justice involves a wide variety of processes and programs that are more apt to restore both those who commit and those who suffer wrongs. It includes children at risk programs, drug courts, violence-treatment programs, as well as VOM programs. It also includes efforts to assist former convicts returning to the community to engage in constructive lifestyles and sustainable roles in families, workplaces, and neighborhoods
