    A configuration system for the ATLAS trigger

    Full text link
    The ATLAS detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider will be exposed to proton-proton collisions from beams crossing at 40 MHz that have to be reduced to the few 100 Hz allowed by the storage systems. A three-level trigger system has been designed to achieve this goal. We describe the configuration system under construction for the ATLAS trigger chain. It provides the trigger system with all the parameters required for decision taking and to record its history. The same system configures the event reconstruction, Monte Carlo simulation and data analysis, and provides tools for accessing and manipulating the configuration data in all contexts.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, contribution to the Conference on Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics (CHEP06), 13.-17. Heavy Quark Symmetry Violation in Semileptonic Decays of D Mesons

    Full text link
    The decays of DD mesons to KlνK l \nu and K∗lνK^* l \nu final states exhibit significant deviations from the predictions of heavy-quark symmetry, as one might expect since the strange quark's mass is of the same order as the QCD scale. Nonetheless, in order to understand where the most significant effects might lie for heavier systems (such as B→DlνB \to D l\nu and B→D∗lνB \to D^* l\nu), the pattern of these deviations is analyzed from the standpoint of perturbative QCD and O(1/ms){\cal O}(1/m_s) corrections. Two main effects are noted. First, the perturbative QCD corrections lead to an overall decrease of predicted rates, which can be understood in terms of production of excited kaonic states. Second, O(1/ms){\cal O}(1/m_s) effects tend to cancel the perturbative QCD corrections in the case of KlνKl\nu decay, while they have minimal effect in K∗lνK^*l\nu decay.Comment: 25 pages (LaTeX) + 7 pages of Postscript figures (included at end), EFI-92-3

    Voice Interaction for Augmented Reality Navigation Interfaces with Natural Language Understanding

    Get PDF
    Voice interaction with natural language understanding (NLU) has been extensively explored in desktop computers, handheld devices, and human-robot interaction. However, there is limited research into voice interaction with NLU in augmented reality (AR). There are benefits of using voice interaction in AR, such as high naturalness and being hands-free. In this project, we introduce VOARLA, an NLU-powered AR voice interface, which navigate courier driver delivery a package. A user study was completed to evaluate VOARLA against an AR voice interface without NLU to investigate the effectiveness of NLU in the navigation interface in AR. We evaluated from three aspects: accuracy, productivity, and commands learning curve. Results found that using NLU in AR increases the accuracy of the interface by 15%. However, higher accuracy did not correlate to an increase in productivity. Results suggest that NLU helped users remember the commands on the first run when they were unfamiliar with the system. This suggests that using NLU in an AR hands-free application can make the learning curve easier for new users

    Resonant and nonresonant D+ -> K- pi+ l+ nu(l) semileptonic decays

    Full text link
    We analyse the semileptonic decay D+ -> K- pi+ l+ nu(l) using an effective Lagrangian developed previously to describe the decays D -> P l nu(l) and D -> V l nu(l). Light vector mesons are included in the model which combines the heavy quark effective Lagrangian and chiral perturbation theory approach. The nonresonant and resonant contributions are compared. With no new parameters the model correctly reproduces the measured ratio Gamma(nres)/Gamma(nres + res). We also present useful nonresonant decay distributions. Finally, a similar model, but with a modified current which satisfies the soft pion theorems at the expense of introducing another parameter, is analyzed and the results of the models are compared.Comment: 17 pages, 3 Postscript figures, standard Latex, extended revision, title, abstract and text (especially Sec. Para o manejo da irrigação com alta frequência e com base em dados climáticos, é desejável que a estimava da evapotranspiração de referência seja feita para pequenos intervalos de tempo. Objetivou-se,neste trabalho, avaliar o desempenho dos métodos FAO-24 Radiação, Priestley-Taylor, Hargreaves-Samani, Camargo-71 e Blaney-Criddle, para estimativa da evapotranspiração de referência em base diária na microrregião de Garanhuns, PE, por meio de comparações com o método padrão FAO Penman-Monteith. Com suporte no erro absoluto médio (EAM), verificou-se, dentre outros indicadores, que o melhor desempenho foi obtido com o método de Priestley-Taylor. Em relação aos métodos aplicáveis quando apenas dados de temperatura foram disponíveis, o de Hargreaves-Samani foi o que apresentou melhor desempenho, tendo sido calibrado com base na minimização do EAM

    A Phenomenological Analysis of Non-resonant Charm Meson Decays

    Get PDF
    We analyse the consequences of the usual assumption of a constant function to fit non-resonant decays from experimental Dalitz plot describing charmed meson decays. We first show, using the D+→Kˉ0π+π0D^+\to \bar{K}^0\pi^+\pi^0 decay channel as an example, how an inadequate extraction of the non-resonant contribution could yield incorrect measurements for the resonant channels. We analyse how the correct study of this decay will provide a test for the validity of factorization in D meson decays. Finally, we show how form factors could be extracted from non-resonant decays. We particularly discuss about the form factor that can be measured from the Ds+→π−π+π+D^+_s\to \pi^-\pi^+\pi^+ decay. We emphasize on its relevance for the study of the decay τ→ντ3π\tau \to \nu_{\tau} 3\pi and the extraction of the a1a_1 meson width.Comment: 14 pages, Latex including 6 eps figure

    Rainwater capture and irrigation.

    The soils predominating in the region are of a crystalline origin, normally flat, siliceous and stony, with low infiltration capacity and low organic matter content. Coupled with these characteristics, the high rainfall intensity causes water losses due to runoff and consequent water erosion. Given the characteristics of the region and when planning at farm levei, it is convenient to consider minimum risk mechanisms for exploitation which allow satisfactory production, despite the limiting environmental conditions. Various rainwater harvesting methods using animal traction as the power source have been developed and adopted through the work ofEMBRAPA, the Brazilian Enterprise for Agricultural and Livestock Research, based at CPA TSA, the Centre for Agricultural and Livestock Research in the Semi-Arid Tropics. The main rainwater harvesting techniques that have proven appropriate for the production conditions ofthe Braziliansemi-arid zone are presented in this chapter

    Role of Light Vector Mesons in the Heavy Particle Chiral Lagrangian

    Get PDF
    We give the general framework for adding "light" vector particles to the heavy hadron effective chiral Lagrangian. This has strong motivations both from the phenomenological and aesthetic standpoints. An application to the already observed D \rightarrow \overbar{K^*} weak transition amplitude is discussed.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX documen
