Learning means a lot more than meeting the school curriculum. Only a small part of it can be done in classrooms, it includes lots of additional activities outside of school. Pr esent - day Hungarian public education is traditionally knowledge - driven. Learning normally does not include field activities, even though these extracurricular field activities are the ones giving the pupils a chance to observe the natural phenomena in thei r natural place and to understand what they learned through their experiences. In some areas that are particularly important in today's educational system, like environmentally conscious education or sustainability education, the field activities would be especially important. They are also needed to understand the connections, the problems and the possible solutions between nature and society. For this purpose institutions and devices that are able to aid the learning process are needed. Borbála nature tra il that we designed presents the industrial history of the once thriving industrial city, Salgótarján and it is a perfect place for field activities. The theme of the nature trail can be inserted into the curriculum at several places, including environment ally conscious education at the topic of man - made environment and it can also be found among the topics of sustainability education

In the rapidly evolving world of the 21st century scientific knowledge is becoming more and more valuable Today s engineering and technological developments are inconceivable without specialists with excellent scientific knowledge But how can today s young people be interested in science In our opinion this is no longer possible with traditional methods practice-oriented experiential pedagogy is needed for this preferably in a natural environment But what can a downtown school do if it wants to hold a science class outside the school building We are looking for the answer to this in our stud

Antioxidant capacity and antibacterial activity of sea buckthorn (Hippophae Rhamnoides L.)

    Get PDF
Consumer behavior changed a lot in the last few years. The chemicals used in food production discourage consumers, but protection against spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms is crucial, because they are important from medical and economic perspectives. Among research topics related to novel, minimally processed techniques using natural components, sea buckthorn is less studied. In spite of its widespread application and beneficial effects the potential of sea buckthorn is not completely explored. Antioxidant capacity and antibacterial activity of commercially available sea buckthorn products (sea buckthorn instant tea, sea buckthorn tea, sea buckthorn powder, berry and juice) were determined. FRAP (Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma) method, and TPC method with Folin-Ciocalteu reagent (Total Polyphenol Content) were applied for antioxidant capacity measurements. Antibacterial activity was tested against Escherichia coli, Enterococcous faecalis, Listeria innocua, Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus by using agar well diffusion method. The obtained results highlighted that not only the active substance content of products but also the preparation techniques (water temperature, time of infusion) significantly influence the antioxidant capacity and antibacterial activity. Higher water temperature in case of tea preparation resulted better antibacterial activity and higher antioxidant capacity. In case of sea buckthorn powder, longer infusion time proved to be more efficient. Products with higher antioxidant capacity showed better antibacterial activity by agar well diffusion method. In case of berry and berry juice, high antioxidant capacity and excellent antibacterial activity were determined

A jegyzet célja a környezetvédelem általános, globális kérdéseinek ismertetése, inter-, illetve multidiszciplináris jellegének bemutatása, valamint a különböző szakterületeken dolgozó szerzők közreműködésével annak szemléltetése, hogyan kapcsolódik össze a környezetvédelemben a tudomány, a politikum, és a gyakorlati tevékenység. A jegyzet számos olyan, napjainkban kiemelt figyelmet kívánó globális problémával foglalkozik, amelyekről naponta hallunk a médiában, de tudományos hátterük nem minden esetben közismert. A jegyzetben helyet kapott a fenntartható társadalom, a fenntartható energiagazdálkodás, a túlnépesedés, a hulladékgazdálkodás, a vízminőség-védelem, a szennyvíztisztítás, a levegőszennyezés és éghajlatváltozás, illetve a zajszennyezés kérdése is.

Assessment of the anti-inflammatory effects of cannabidiol and its fluorinated derivative in in vitro and in vivo models of atopic dermatitis

It is common wisdom in pharmacology that fluorination can significantly increase the efficacy of the active components in pharmaceuticals – actually, ca. 30% of the best-selling drugs worldwide contain fluorinated compounds. The aim of the current study was to assess the potential anti-inflammatory effects of cannabidiol (CBD), the major non-psychoactive component of the pant Cannabis sativa, and its fluorinated derivative (HUF-101) in various experimental systems modeling atopic dermatitis (AD). For the in vitro AD model, human epidermal keratinocytes were challenged with the combination of Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin B (SEB) and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), and expressions of certain marker molecules were assessed by RT-qPCR and ELISA. For the in vivo model, mice were sensitized with 2% oxazolone (OXA) before elicitation. Test compounds were applied topically (1 and 10 μM) after inducing skin inflammation and edema formation (in the ears) was measured with an engineer’s micrometer. In the in vitro model, expressions of certain pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g. interleukin [IL]-1α, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-8) were significantly down-regulated upon the administration of CBD and HUF-101. Of great importance, however, HUF-101 exhibited significantly higher potency in comparison to CBD. In the in vivo model, topical application of 1 μM CBD significantly reduced the OXA-induced ear edema; however, 10 μM CBD exerted insignificant effect. In contrast, HUF-101 attenuated OXA-induced edema formation at both concentrations. Intriguingly, similar to the in vitro conditions, the anti-inflammatory potency of HUF-101 was significantly greater than that of CBD. Our study provides the first evidence that CBD and its fluorinated derivative exert significant anti-inflammatory actions in models of AD. These intriguing data invite further pre-clinical and clinical studies to exploit the therapeutic potential of certain CBD derivatives in cutaneous inflammatory conditions
