    Collective dynamics of active particles

    Il nostro scopo è lo studio e il confronto della dinamica di particelle passive e attive in un fluido. Vengono inoltre introdotti i modelli matematici che permettono di simulare il loro comportamento. Sono studiate le propietà e la soluzione numerica dell'equazione di Langevin nella sua approsimazione in regime 'overdamped'. Mostriamo come lo spostamento quadratico medio delle particelle passive sia diffusivo, i.e. lineare nel tempo, e proporzionale al coefficiente di diffusione lineare, mentre quello di particelle attive quadratico per un tempo minore dell'inverso del coefficiente di diffusione rotazionale e diffusivo per un tempo maggiore. Con la presenza di una parete repulsiva e osservando la distribuzione di probabilità della posizione delle particelle, notiamo come quelle attive tendano ad accumularsi su di essa. Infine osserviamo che sotto l'azione di un potenziale repulsivo particelle attive tendono a formare agglomerati

    Ropeway roller batteries dynamics. Modeling, identification, and full-scale validation

    A parametric mechanical model based on a Lagrangian formulation is here proposed to predict the dynamic response of roller batteries during the vehicles transit across the so-called compression towers in ropeways transportation systems. The model describes the dynamic interaction between the ropeway substructures starting from the modes and frequencies of the system to the forced dynamic response caused by the vehicles transit. The analytical model is corroborated and validated via an extensive experimental campaign devoted to the dynamic characterization of the roller battery system. The data acquired on site via a custom-design sensor network allowed to identify the frequencies and damping ratios by employing the Frequency Domain Decomposition (FDD) method.     Olfactory evaluation in obstructive sleep apnoea patients

    The sense of smell has a high impact on the quality of life. The aim of the present study was to investigate olfactory dysfunction in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) and correlate the severity of disease with olfactory dysfunction. The relationships between nasal obstruction, nasal mucociliary cleareance and olfactory tests were also evaluated. Sixty patients with a diagnosis of OSAS were enrolled and underwent olfactory function evaluation. In all patients olfactory performance was tested with the Sniffin’ Sticks method. Mucociliary transport times and anterior rhinomanometry were performed to identify eventual nasal obstruction and deficits in nasal mucociliary clearance. Olfactory dysfunction was present in 22 (36.6%) patients of the study group: of these, hyposmia was present in 19 (86.4%) and anosmia in 3 (13.6%). The mean TDI score in the study group was 30. A strong correlation between the olfactory dysfunction and severity of sleep apnoea measured using the AHI was found. Patients with OSA would seem to have a high incidence of olfactory dysfunction. The degree of olfactory dysfunction appears to be related to the severity of disease. However, other co-factors such as nasal obstruction and reduced mucociliary clearance might also play a role in of the aetiology of this condition

    Protective effects of podocyte-expressed decay accelerating factor in focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis

    Kidney glomerulosclerosis commonly progresses to end-stage kidney failure, but pathogenic mechanisms are still poorly understood. Here, we show that podocyte expression of decay-accelerating factor (DAF/CD55), a complement C3 convertase regulator, crucially controls disease in murine models of adriamycin (ADR)-induced focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic glomerulosclerosis. ADR induces enzymatic cleavage of DAF from podocyte surfaces, leading to complement activation. C3 deficiency or prevention of C3a receptor (C3aR) signaling abrogates disease despite DAF deficiency, confirming complement dependence. Mechanistic studies show that C3a/C3aR ligations on podocytes initiate an autocrine IL-1β/IL-1R1 signaling loop that reduces nephrin expression, causing actin cytoskeleton rearrangement. Uncoupling IL-1β/IL-1R1 signaling prevents disease, providing a causal link. Glomeruli of patients with FSGS lack DAF and stain positive for C3d, and urinary C3a positively correlates with the degree of proteinuria. Together, our data indicate that the development and progression of glomerulosclerosis involve loss of podocyte DAF, triggering local, complement-dependent, IL-1β-induced podocyte injury, potentially identifying new therapeutic targets

    In this paper, we present the Modular Monitoring System (MMS), a low-power wireless architecture dedicated to Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) applications. Our solution features an easily customizable modular architecture, fulfilling the needs of many SHM applications. The MMS supports mesh network topology and offers excellent coverage and reliability, taking advantage of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) technology. In this preliminary work we show how the flexibility of our approach offers great advantages with respect to the current state-of-the-art systems dedicated to SHM

    HCV-Associated Nephropathies in the Era of Direct Acting Antiviral Agents

    Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a systemic disorder that frequently associates with extrahepatic manifestations, including nephropathies. Cryoglobulinemia is a typical extrahepatic manifestation of HCV infection that often involves kidneys with a histological pattern of membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis. Other, less common renal diseases related to HCV infection include membranous nephropathy, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, IgA nephropathy, fibrillary and immunotactoid glomerulopathy. Over the last decades, the advent of direct-acting antiviral therapies has revolutionized treatment of HCV infection, dramatically increasing the rates of viral clearance. In patients where antiviral therapy alone fails to induce renal disease remission add-on B-cell depleting agents represent an alternative to counteract the synthesis of pathogenic antibodies. Immunosuppressive therapies, such as steroids, alkylating agents, and plasma exchanges, may still represent an effective option to inhibit immune-complex driven inflammatory response, but the potentially associated increase of HCV replication and worsening of liver disease represent a serious limitation to their use

    Impact of Previous ART and of ART Initiation on Outcome of HIV-Associated Tuberculosis

    Background. Combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) has progressively decreased mortality of HIV-associated tuberculosis .To date, however, limited data on tuberculosis treatment outcomes among coinfected patients who are not ART-naive at the time of tuberculosis diagnosis are available. Methods. A multicenter, observational study enrolled 246 HIV-infected patients diagnosed with tuberculosis, in 96 Italian infectious diseases hospital units, who started tuberculosis treatment. A polytomous logistic regression model was used to identify baseline factors associated with the outcome. A Poisson regression model was used to explain the effect of ART during tuberculosis treatment on mortality, as a time-varying covariate, adjusting for baseline characteristics. Results. Outcomes of tuberculosis treatment were as follows: 130 (52.8%) were successfully treated, 36 (14.6%) patients died in a median time of 2 months (range: 0–16), and 80 (32.6%) had an unsuccessful outcome. Being foreign born or injecting drug users was associated with unsuccessful outcomes. In multivariable Poisson regression, cART during tuberculosis treatment decreased the risk of death, while this risk increased for those who were not ART-naive at tuberculosis diagnosis. Conclusions. ART during tuberculosis treatment is associated with a substantial reduction of death rate among HIV-infected patients. However, patients who are not ART-naive when they develop tuberculosis remain at elevated risk of death

    Treatment of relapses of benign latero-cervical pathology: a narrative literature review

    Benign laterocervical pathologies are not without pitfalls. Many may relapse after many years and, sometimes, they cannot be predicted. The purpose of this review is to describe the surgical measures necessary for the treatment of relapses of the most common benign laterocervical masses. We searched PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases for articles describing the treatment of the most common benign cervical disease recurrences, and summarised available evidence in this narrative review. We overviewed observations about recurrent benign mixed tumour (pleomorphic adenoma), parapharyngeal space tumours and carotid body paragangliomas, thyroglossal duct anomalies and branchial cleft anomalies. Proper surgical technique is crucial for safely and effectively managing the relapses of benign latero-cervical diseases. Radiotherapy is indicated in several cases of recurrence such as pleomorphic adenoma and unresectable paraganglioma. Long-term follow-up is of utmost importance to promptly recognise and treat recurrencies

    Optimizing the Heavy Metal Ion Sensing Properties of Functionalized Silver Nanoparticles: The Role of Surface Coating Density

    We present a colorimetric sensor based on functionalized silver nanoparticles for the detection of metal ions in aqueous solutions. The interaction between the target metal ion and the functionalizing agent triggers the aggregation of these nanoparticles, and the consequent change in optical properties allows the detection/quantification of the analyte. In detail, this work describes the synthesis of AgNPs by a chemical reduction method, and the production of mercaptoundecanoic acid functionalized NPs with different surface densities (multi-, full-, and two partial layers). UV-Vis spectroscopy was used to monitor the functionalization processes, and to investigate the aggregation behavior of each AgNPs@11MUA sensor upon titration with the metal ions of interest, namely Ni2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Cd2+, Mn2+, and Cu2+. The resulting UV-Vis raw data obtained for each layer density were submitted to principal component analysis to dissect the role of the metal ions in NP aggregation and in establishing the sensitivity and selectivity of the AgNPs@11MUA sensor. Interestingly, we observed an increase in sensor sensitivity and selectivity at a lower density of the functionalizing agent on the AgNPs’ surface, which results in characteristic colors of the NP suspension upon titration with each metal ion
