Equivalence of Bose-Einstein condensation and symmetry breaking
Based on a classic paper by Ginibre [Commun. Math. Phys. {\bf 8} 26 (1968)]
it is shown that whenever Bogoliubov's approximation, that is, the replacement
of a_0 and a_0^* by complex numbers in the Hamiltonian, asymptotically yields
the right pressure, it also implies the asymptotic equality of ||^2/V and
/V in symmetry breaking fields, irrespective of the existence or
absence of Bose-Einstein condensation. Because the former was proved by Ginibre
to hold for absolutely integrable superstable pair interactions, the latter is
equally valid in this case. Apart from Ginibre's work, our proof uses only a
simple convexity inequality due to Griffiths.Comment: An error in my summary of previous results (the definition of F') is
corrected. The correction is to be done also in the PR

Absence of Embedded Mass Shells: Cerenkov Radiation and Quantum Friction
We show that, in a model where a non-relativistic particle is coupled to a
quantized relativistic scalar Bose field, the embedded mass shell of the
particle dissolves in the continuum when the interaction is turned on, provided
the coupling constant is sufficiently small. More precisely, under the
assumption that the fiber eigenvectors corresponding to the putative mass shell
are differentiable as functions of the total momentum of the system, we show
that a mass shell could exist only at a strictly positive distance from the
unperturbed embedded mass shell near the boundary of the energy-momentum
spectrum.Comment: Revised version: a remark added at the end of Section
Large Deviations in the Superstable Weakly Imperfect Bose Gas
The superstable Weakly Imperfect Bose Gas {(WIBG)} was originally derived to
solve the inconsistency of the Bogoliubov theory of superfluidity. Its
grand-canonical thermodynamics was recently solved but not at {point of} the
{(first order)} phase transition. This paper proposes to close this gap by
using the large deviations formalism and in particular the analysis of the Kac
distribution function. It turns out that, as a function of the chemical
potential, the discontinuity of the Bose condensate density at the phase
transition {point} disappears as a function of the particle density. Indeed,
the Bose condensate continuously starts at the first critical particle density
and progressively grows but the free-energy per particle stays constant until
the second critical density is reached. At higher particle densities, the Bose
condensate density as well as the free-energy per particle both increase
{monotonously}
Diamagnetism of quantum gases with singular potentials
We consider a gas of quasi-free quantum particles confined to a finite box,
subjected to singular magnetic and electric fields. We prove in great
generality that the finite volume grand-canonical pressure is jointly analytic
in the chemical potential ant the intensity of the external magnetic field. We
also discuss the thermodynamic limit
Measurements of the Separated Longitudinal Structure Function FL From Hydrogen and Deuterium Targets at Low Q2
Structure functions, as measured in lepton-nucleon scattering, have proven to be very useful in studying the partonic dynamics within the nucleon. However, it is experimentally difficult to separately determine the longitudinal and transverse structure functions, and consequently there are substantially less data available in particular for the longitudinal structure function. Here, we present separated structure functions for hydrogen and deuterium at low four-momentum transfer squared, Q2 \u3c 1GeV2, and compare them with parton distribution parametrization and kT factorization approaches. While differences are found, the parametrizations generally agree with the data, even at the very low-Q2 scale of the data. The deuterium data show a smaller longitudinal structure function and a smaller ratio of longitudinal to transverse cross section, R, than the proton. This suggests either an unexpected difference in R for the proton and the neutron or a suppression of the gluonic distribution in nuclei
Lower Spectral Branches of a Spin-Boson Model
We study the structure of the spectrum of a two-level quantum system weakly
coupled to a boson field (spin-boson model). Our analysis allows to avoid the
cutoff in the number of bosons, if their spectrum is bounded below by a
positive constant. We show that, for small coupling constant, the lower part of
the spectrum of the spin-boson Hamiltonian contains (one or two) isolated
eigenvalues and (respectively, one or two) manifolds of atom -boson states
indexed by the boson momentum . The dispersion laws and generalized
eigenfunctions of the latter are calculated
Bloch-Wall Phase Transition in the Spherical Model
The temperature-induced second-order phase transition from Bloch to linear
(Ising-like) domain walls in uniaxial ferromagnets is investigated for the
model of D-component classical spin vectors in the limit D \to \infty. This
exactly soluble model is equivalent to the standard spherical model in the
homogeneous case, but deviates from it and is free from unphysical behavior in
a general inhomogeneous situation. It is shown that the thermal fluctuations of
the transverse magnetization in the wall (the Bloch-wall order parameter)
result in the diminishing of the wall transition temperature T_B in comparison
to its mean-field value, thus favouring the existence of linear walls. For
finite values of T_B an additional anisotropy in the basis plane x,y is
required; in purely uniaxial ferromagnets a domain wall behaves like a
2-dimensional system with a continuous spin symmetry and does not order into
the Bloch one.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figure
Transverse momentum dependence of semi-inclusive pion production
Cross sections for semi-inclusive electroproduction of charged pions
() from both proton and deuteron targets were measured for
, GeV, , and GeV. For
GeV, we find the azimuthal dependence to be small, as expected
theoretically. For both and , the dependence from the
deuteron is found to be slightly weaker than from the proton. In the context of
a simple model, this implies that the initial transverse momenta width of
quarks is larger than for quarks and, contrary to expectations, the
transverse momentum width of the favored fragmentation function is larger than
the unfavored one.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. Fit form changed to include Cahn effect Minor
