    Boundary-layers for a Neumann problem at higher critical exponents

    We consider the Neumann problem (P)−Δv+v=vq−1 in  D, v>0 in  D, ∂νv=0 on ∂D,(P)\qquad - \Delta v + v= v^{q-1} \ \text{in }\ \mathcal{D}, \ v > 0 \ \text{in } \ \mathcal{D},\ \partial_\nu v = 0 \ \text{on } \partial\mathcal{D} , where D\mathcal{D} is an open bounded domain in RN,\mathbb{R}^N, ν\nu is the unit inner normal at the boundary and q>2.q>2. For any integer, 1≤h≤N−3,1\le h\le N-3, we show that, in some suitable domains D,\mathcal D, problem (P)(P) has a solution which blows-up along a h−h-dimensional minimal submanifold of the boundary ∂D\partial\mathcal D as qq approaches from either below or above the higher critical Sobolev exponent 2(N−h)N−h−2.{2(N-h)\over N-h-2}.Comment: 13 page

    Demographics by depth: spatially explicit life-history dynamics of a protogynous reef fish

    Distribution and demographics of the hogfish (Lachnolaimus maximus) were investigated by using a combined approach of in situ observations and life history analyses. Presence, density, size, age, and size and age at sex change all varied with depth in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Hogfish (64–774 mm fork length and 0–19 years old) were observed year-round and were most common over complex, natural hard bottom habitat. As depth increased, the presence and density of hogfish decreased, but mean size and age increased. Size at age was smaller nearshore (<30 m). Length and age at sex change of nearshore hogfish were half those of offshore hogfish and were coincident with the minimum legal size limit. Fishing pressure is presumably greater nearshore and presents a confounding source of increased mortality; however, a strong red tide occurred the year before this study began and likely also affected nearshore demographics. Nevertheless, these data indicate ontogenetic migration and escapement of fast-growing fish to offshore habitat, both of which should reduce the likelihood of fishing-induced evolution. Data regarding the hogfish fishery are limited and regionally dependent, which has confounded previous stock assessments; however, the spatially explicit vital rates reported herein can be applied to future monitoring efforts

    Identification and Characterization of the Corazonin Receptor and Possible Physiological Roles of the Corazonin-Signaling Pathway in Rhodnius prolixus.

    Neuropeptides control many physiological and endocrinological processes in animals, acting as neuroactive chemicals within the central and peripheral nervous systems. Corazonin (CRZ) is one such neuropeptide that has a variety of physiological roles associated with control of heartbeat, ecdysis behavior initiation, and cuticle coloration. These physiological effects are mediated by the CRZ receptor (CRZR). In order to understand the role of the CRZ-signaling pathway in Rhodnius prolixus, the cDNA sequence encoding the Rhopr-CRZR was isolated and cloned revealing two splice variants (Rhopr-CRZR-α and β). Sequence analysis revealed characteristics of rhodopsin-like GPCRs. Rhopr-CRZR-α and β were dose-dependently activated by Rhopr-CRZ with EC50 values of 2.7 and 1 nM, respectively, when tested in a functional receptor assay using CHOKI-aeq cells. Neither receptors were activated by the evolutionarily-related peptides, Rhopr-AKH, or Rhopr-ACP. For 5th instars, qPCR revealed expression of Rhopr-CRZR transcript in the CNS, the dorsal vessel, abdominal dorsal epidermis, and prothoracic glands with associated fat body. Interestingly, transcript expression was also found in the female and male reproductive tissues. Rhopr-CRZR transcript was reduced after injection of dsCRZR into adult R. prolixus. In these insects, the basal heartbeat rate was reduced in vivo, and the increase in heartbeat frequency normally produced by CRZ on dorsal vessel in vitro was much reduced. No effect of dsCRZR injection was seen on ecdysis or coloration of the cuticle

    Dispersion and the electron-phonon interaction in a single heterostructure

    We investigate the electron-phonon interaction in a polar-polar single heterostructure through the use of the linear combination of hybrid phonon modes, considering the role of longitudinal optical, transverse optical and interface modes, using a continuum model that accounts for both mechanical and electrical continuity over a heterostructure interface. We discuss the use of other models for such systems, such as the bulk phonon (3DP) and dielectric continuum (DC) models, using previously developed sum-rules to explain the limitations on their validity. We find that our linear combination (LC) model gives an excellent agreement with scattering rates previously derived using the 3DP and DC models when the lattice dispersion is weak enough to be ignored, however, when there is a noticeable lattice dispersion, the LC model returns a different answer, suggesting that interface modes play a much greater part in the scattering characteristics of the system under certain conditions. We also discuss the remote phonon effect in polar/polar heterostructures

    Fatally Injured Pedestrians and Bicyclists in the United States with High Blood Alcohol Concentrations

    More than one-third of pedestrians and one-fifth of bicyclists killed in crashes in 2014 were impaired by alcohol, but scant attention has been paid to the problem. This omission contrasts starkly with the many successful policies that have reduced impaired driving, a new Institute study notes.The study looked at fatalities of passenger vehicle drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists 16 and older from 1982 to 2014. Using a federal database, IIHS researchers looked at the characteristics of those crashes and trends over time. They found that the percentage of fatally injured pedestrians and bicyclists 16 and older who were impaired has fallen over the decades, but not as dramatically as the percentage of impaired drivers

    Flat-spectrum radio sources as likely counterparts of unidentified INTEGRAL sources (Research Note)

    Many sources in the fourth INTEGRAL/IBIS catalogue are still unidentified, since they lack an optical counterpart. An important tool that can help in identifying/classifying these sources is the cross-correlation with radio catalogues, which are very sensitive and positionally accurate. Moreover, the radio properties of a source, such as the spectrum or morphology, could provide further insight into its nature. Flat-spectrum radio sources at high Galactic latitudes are likely to be AGN, possibly associated to a blazar or to the compact core of a radio galaxy. Here we present a small sample of 6 sources extracted from the fourth INTEGRAL/IBIS catalogue that are still unidentified/unclassified, but which are very likely associated with a bright, flat-spectrum radio object. To confirm the association and to study the source X-ray spectral parameters, we performed X-ray follow-up observations with Swift/XRT. We report the results obtained from this search and discuss the nature of each source. 5 of the 6 radio associations are also detected in X-rays; in 3 cases they are the only counterpart found. IGR J06073--0024 is a flat-spectrum radio quasar at z=1.08, IGR J14488--4008 is a newly discovered radio galaxy, while IGR J18129--0649 is an AGN of a still unknown type. The nature of IGR J07225--3810 and IGR J19386--4653 is less well defined, since in both cases we find another X-ray source in the INTEGRAL error circle; nevertheless, the flat-spectrum radio source, likely to be a radio loud AGN, remains a viable and more convincing association in both cases. Only for IGR J11544--7618 could we not find any convincing counterpart since the radio association is not an X-ray emitter.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysic
