    Graphene Transport at High Carrier Densities using a Polymer Electrolyte Gate

    We report the study of graphene devices in Hall-bar geometry, gated with a polymer electrolyte. High densities of 6 ×1013/cm2\times 10^{13}/cm^{2} are consistently reached, significantly higher than with conventional back-gating. The mobility follows an inverse dependence on density, which can be correlated to a dominant scattering from weak scatterers. Furthermore, our measurements show a Bloch-Gr\"uneisen regime until 100 K (at 6.2 ×1013/cm2\times10^{13}/cm^{2}), consistent with an increase of the density. Ubiquitous in our experiments is a small upturn in resistivity around 3 ×1013/cm2\times10^{13}/cm^{2}, whose origin is discussed. We identify two potential causes for the upturn: the renormalization of Fermi velocity and an electrochemically-enhanced scattering rate.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, Published Versio

    Intentional Foreign Body Ingestion: A Complex Case of Pica

    Intentional ingestion of foreign objects, a form of self-injurious behavior, is rarely discussed in the medical literature but often requires extensive evaluation, management, and resources. It can be especially problematic for gastroenterologists, who are often consulted for removal of the foreign body. Pica is the psychiatric diagnosis for intentional ingestion of nonnutritive objects and is most commonly seen in prison inmates and those diagnosed with intellectual disability or psychiatric illness. This case report presents a challenging case of pica, highlighting the complexity involved in diagnosis and the need for early psychiatric intervention. It also aims to provide a general review of the literature and practical recommendations to assist with managing this form of self-injurious behavior in the inpatient setting. Collaborative efforts among specialties in addition to primary prevention are vital to successful management of these patients

    Dallas with balls: televized sport, soap opera and male and female pleasures

    Two of the most popular of television genres, soap opera and sports coverage have been very much differentiated along gender lines in terms of their audiences. Soap opera has been regarded very much as a 'gynocentric' genre with a large female viewing audience while the audiences for television sport have been predominantly male. Gender differentiation between the genres has had implications for the popular image of each. Soap opera has been perceived as inferior; as mere fantasy and escapism for women while television sports has been perceived as a legitimate, even edifying experience for men. In this article the authors challenge the view that soap opera and television sport are radically different and argue that they are, in fact, very similar in a number of significant ways. They suggest that both genres invoke similar structures of feeling and sensibility in their respective audiences and that television sport is a 'male soap opera'. They consider the ways in which the viewing context of each genre is related to domestic life and leisure, the ways in which the textual structure and conventions of each genre invoke emotional identification, and finally, the ways in which both genres re-affirm gender identities

    Recent Advances on Density Separation Techniques for Microplastic Recovery from Sediments

    Microplastics are small plastic fragments commonly less than 5 mm in size (Khatmullina et al., 2016), making up about 92% of the total plastic pollution. Since these plastics are transparent due to their small size, they cause invisible plastic pollution. Due to their adsorptive properties, they can potentially harm marine and human life if ingested. Microplastic extraction is used to isolate microplastics from their original matrix using various methods and instruments to ease the process. Electrostatic separation, magnetization, and pressurized fluid extraction are among the established microplastic extraction methods, but these separation techniques require more effort and use a more advanced setup than density separation. Salt-assisted density separation of microplastics has been demonstrated to provide modest to excellent recovery rates. This review survey reported different salt solutions used in microplastic extraction via density separation in the last five years. Among the inorganic salts used in density separation, sodium dihydrogen phosphate (NaH2PO4) holds promise in separating microplastics because of its high extraction efficiency while being cost-effective and non-hazardous

    Effervescent Water Coagulant from Citrofortunella Microcarpa Scraps for Water Treatment

    As the Philippines experiences increasing alerts in water pollution, this study aims to create a Calamansi-based effervescent water coagulant to increase the accessibility of purified water to Filipinos. The study makes use of Citrofortunella microcarpa (Calamansi), a small citrus fruit abundant in the Philippines. Calamansi has a big contribution in the production of agricultural waste as the fruit is mainly utilized for its pulp; therefore, the researchers focused on the usage of Calamansi’s peels and seeds, given their ability to absorb minute particles and to kill bacteria. Disposed Calamansi scraps were powderized and mixed with other components to form an eco-friendly effervescent water coagulant. The researchers assessed the efficacy of the Calamansi coagulant by comparing it to Ferric chloride (FeCl3), an existing chemical water coagulant, and testing ten trials of each sample in a contaminated soil-water mixture. The group’s findings suggest that the effervescent Calamansi coagulant presented a higher efficacy in water treatment than FeCl3, with its pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), and salinity readings all within the standard range. The Calamansi coagulant accumulated more residue than the FeCl3 sample. The study demonstrates that Calamansi seed and peel waste offer a great alternative to chemical-based coagulants in water treatment

    Comparison of engagement and emotional responses of older and younger adults interacting with 3D cultural heritage artefacts on personal devices

    The availability of advanced software and less expensive hardware allows museums to preserve and share artefacts digitally. As a result, museums are frequently making their collections accessible online as interactive, 3D models. This could lead to the unique situation of viewing the digital artefact before the physical artefact. Experiencing artefacts digitally outside of the museum on personal devices may affect the user's ability to emotionally connect to the artefacts. This study examines how two target populations of young adults (18–21 years) and the elderly (65 years and older) responded to seeing cultural heritage artefacts in three different modalities: augmented reality on a tablet, 3D models on a laptop, and then physical artefacts. Specifically, the time spent, enjoyment, and emotional responses were analysed. Results revealed that regardless of age, the digital modalities were enjoyable and encouraged emotional responses. Seeing the physical artefacts after the digital ones did not lessen their enjoyment or emotions felt. These findings aim to provide an insight into the effectiveness of 3D artefacts viewed on personal devices and artefacts shown outside of the museum for encouraging emotional responses from older and younger people

    Matrix Models for Supersymmetric Chern-Simons Theories with an ADE Classification

    We consider N=3 supersymmetric Chern-Simons (CS) theories that contain product U(N) gauge groups and bifundamental matter fields. Using the matrix model of Kapustin, Willett and Yaakov, we examine the Euclidean partition function of these theories on an S^3 in the large N limit. We show that the only such CS theories for which the long range forces between the eigenvalues cancel have quivers which are in one-to-one correspondence with the simply laced affine Dynkin diagrams. As the A_n series was studied in detail before, in this paper we compute the partition function for the D_4 quiver. The D_4 example gives further evidence for a conjecture that the saddle point eigenvalue distribution is determined by the distribution of gauge invariant chiral operators.     Orbital textures and charge density waves in transition metal dichalcogenides

    Low-dimensional electron systems, as realized naturally in graphene or created artificially at the interfaces of heterostructures, exhibit a variety of fascinating quantum phenomena with great prospects for future applications. Once electrons are confined to low dimensions, they also tend to spontaneously break the symmetry of the underlying nuclear lattice by forming so-called density waves; a state of matter that currently attracts enormous attention because of its relation to various unconventional electronic properties. In this study we reveal a remarkable and surprising feature of charge density waves (CDWs), namely their intimate relation to orbital order. For the prototypical material 1T-TaS2 we not only show that the CDW within the two-dimensional TaS2-layers involves previously unidentified orbital textures of great complexity. We also demonstrate that two metastable stackings of the orbitally ordered layers allow to manipulate salient features of the electronic structure. Indeed, these orbital effects enable to switch the properties of 1T-TaS2 nanostructures from metallic to semiconducting with technologically pertinent gaps of the order of 200 meV. This new type of orbitronics is especially relevant for the ongoing development of novel, miniaturized and ultra-fast devices based on layered transition metal dichalcogenides

    Trust as a mediator in the relationship between childhood sexual abuse and IL-6 level in adulthood

    Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been shown to predict the coupling of depression and inflammation in adulthood. Trust within intimate relationships, a core element in marital relations, has been shown to predict positive physical and mental health outcomes, but the mediating role of trust in partners in the association between CSA and inflammation in adulthood requires further study. The present study aimed to examine the impact of CSA on inflammatory biomarkers (IL-6 and IL-1β) in adults with depression and the mediating role of trust. A cross-sectional survey data set of adults presenting with mood and sleep disturbance was used in the analysis. CSA demonstrated a significant negative correlation with IL-6 level (r = -0.28, p<0. 01) in adults with clinically significant depression, while trust showed a significant positive correlation with IL-6 level (r = 0.36, p < .01). Sobel test and bootstrapping revealed a significant mediating role for trust between CSA and IL-6 level. CSA and trust in partners were revealed to have significant associations with IL-6 level in adulthood. Counterintuitively, the directions of association were not those expected. Trust played a mediating role between CSA and adulthood levels of IL-6. Plausible explanations for these counterintuitive findings are discussed
