The Internet has become a necessity for banks that want to move forward and follow the developments in information and communications technology. Moreover, the Internet has changed the way that consumers and businesses conduct their banking transactions today. According to analysts, Internet banking has revolutionized the whole banking industry; it is said to have provided banks with new and cost-effective means of retaining and increasing their customer base. It is believed that the U.S. is three to five years ahead of Europe as far as Internet banking is concerned. When it comes to Greece, as soon as Greek banks realized the upcoming developments, they started transforming their services in order to become more up-to-date and more competitive. What\u27s more, Greek banks have developed websites, which demonstrate many similarities when compared to the American banks websites, and they offer a wide array of services including mobile banking. Also, both the U.S. and the Greek banks follow the global trends of the online financial services towards consolidation and integration. However, the adoption rate from the Greek consumers is slow for a number of reasons, some of the most important being their mistrust towards the use of Internet and the unfamiliarity of the majority of people with the new technologies. This paper, Internet Banking History and Strategies: A case study of U.S. and Greek banks , describes the history, the current status as well as the projections and trends of Internet banking for both the United States and Greece. The case of successful U.S. and Greek banks are described and their websites are analyzed in an attempt to identify tactics they employ and see which, if any, Internet banking strategies Greek banks have not yet implemented. Ultimately, what strategies they can adopt and which they can circumvent in order to become more competitive in the new era of the global economy

Eremitic landscape dwelling in Confucian China and Enlightenment Europe: structuring the moral self in reclusion and performing public duty

    Get PDF
This thesis explores how the experience of reclusion in free landscapes and private gardens of Confucian China and Enlightenment Europe contributed to people’s moral improvement by cultivating good passions such as temperance, encouraging introspection, increasing the sense of responsibility towards society and rendering erudite individuals prompt to perform their public duty as politicians and civil servants. The thesis is based on the comparative analysis of philosophical concepts, works of art, poems and cultural practices in order to highlight the similarities and divergences between Chinese and European – particularly British and French - eremitic landscape dwelling. Taking into account the historical context in which two important systems of thought were developed in different geographic regions, the research brings together the state-sanctioned Confucian ethics with Enlightenment Deism which, inspired by Roman Stoics, played a pivotal role in the promulgation of reclusive landscape culture and the creation of non-geometrical gardens used as retreats in the eighteenth-century Europe. Investigating human relationships with the natural environment and organized society, as well as views on interpersonal relationships, established religion and matters of cultural heritage, the thesis shows that gardens where Confucian literati and socially privileged Europeans, who had espoused Enlightenment ideals, liked to retire comprised mediating spaces between the private realm and the public sphere, solitude and public action. Eremitic landscape dwelling did not derive from a sentiment of contempt for the world or from a selfish desire to avoid hardships. Rather, this noble form of reclusion whose purpose was the cultivation of virtue and humaneness revolved around the greatest interest of individuals and the welfare of society

Development of replication-defective herpes simplex viral vectors for delivery of RNA interference to neurons of the peripheral nervous system

    Get PDF
Considerable interest has been focused on inducing RNA interference (RNAi) in neurons to study gene function and identify new targets for disease intervention. Although small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) have been used to silence genes in neurons, in vivo delivery of RNAi to the central and peripheral nervous system remains a major challenge limiting its applications. This thesis describes the development of a highly efficient method for in vivo gene silencing in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) using replication-defective herpes simplex viral (HSV-1) vectors by identifying and evaluating various approaches to induce RNAi, i.e. expression of individual short-hairpin RNAs (shRNAs), artificial microRNAs (miRNAs) and multiple tandem miRNAs. Following the development of these systems, HSV-mediated delivery of shRNA or miRNA against reporter genes was shown to result in highly effective and specific silencing in neuronal and non-neuronal cells in culture and in the DRG of mice in vivo, including in a transgenic mouse model. Proof of concept was established by demonstrating in vivo silencing of the endogenous trpv1 gene, thought to be involved in nociception, by assessing both mRNA and protein levels. These data are the first to show silencing in DRG neurons in vivo by vector-mediated delivery of shRNA and support the utility of HSV vectors for gene silencing in peripheral neurons and the potential application of this technology to the study of nociceptive processes and in pain gene target validation studies. Moreover, a disabled HSV-1 vector targeting p75, Lingo1 and NgR2, which are involved in myelin inhibition of axonal regeneration, was developed and evaluated for its ability to promote regeneration of sensory axons into the spinal cord, following injury of the dorsal roots. This is the first time such an appoach to silencing multiple genes has been employed. Although HSV-mediated delivery of multiple miRNAs resulted in highly effective silencing of these genes in dividing cells in culture, while highly effective silencing of p75 was achieved, only modest silencing of Lingo1 and NgR2 was observed in DRG neurons in vivo. Preliminary regeneration experiments, which were largely outside the scope of this thesis, were inconclusive and require more extensive study as a stand-alone project, if the in vivo potential of the approach developed for silencing multiple genes targeted at axonal regeneration is to be further explored

    Get PDF
This article discusses the effects of reciting English story in a way to prepare a storytelling competition in a private elementary school. Initially forced to use the method, the young language learners (YLL) gradually came to appreciate it. The practice enabled them to construct the story comprehensively, to improve pronunciation, to motivate their peers to tell the story confidently, and to develop the habit of attending the details of language in the context of language input. To investigate how beneficial the English story recitation is, I use interview to examine teacher’s perceptions and experiences about story recitation and its effect on language development. I will also investigate how story recitation is used and its effects in an EFL (English as a foreign language) context. The paper concludes that such practice enhances YLL’s noticing and rehearsal and later it facilitates second language acquisition. Therefore, teachers are suggested to have a positive attitude towards English story recitation for young language learners

The financial industry, especially the banking industry, requires the bank to maintain its capital structure well. Bank can change the accounting policy of fixed assets into revaluation method. This study would like to see the impact of assets revaluation and its effect on the capital structure. There are two elements of capital structure that can affect the CAR ratio, that is, core capital and complementary capital. In the supplementary capital, there is an asset revaluation reserve This study looks at a bank that revalued its fixed assets since 2014. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that the revaluation of assets could improve the capital structure of these banks, especially it increases the capital adequacy ratio.     Keywords: assets revaluation, capital adequacy ratio, risk weighted asset

Divergence between Neuronal and Oligodendroglial Cell Fate, in Postnatal Brain Neural Stem Cells, Leads to Divergent Properties in Polymorphic In Vitro Assays

Two main stem cell pools exist in the postnatal mammalian brain that, although they share some “stemness” properties, also exhibit significant differences. Multipotent neural stem cells survive within specialized microenvironments, called niches, and they are vulnerable to ageing. Oligodendroglial lineage-restricted progenitor cells are widely distributed in the brain parenchyma and are more resistant to the effects of ageing. Here, we create polymorphic neural stem cell cultures and allow cells to progress towards the neuronal and the oligodendroglial lineage. We show that the divergence of cell fate is accompanied by a divergence in the properties of progenitors, which reflects their adaptation to life in the niche or the parenchyma. Neurogenesis shows significant spatial restrictions and a dependence on laminin, a major niche component, while oligodendrogenesis shows none of these constraints. Furthermore, the blocking of integrin-β1 leads to opposing effects, reducing neurogenesis and enhancing oligodendrogenesis. Therefore, polymorphic neural stem cell assays can be used to investigate the divergence of postnatal brain stem cells and also to predict the in vivo effects of potential therapeutic molecules targeting stem and progenitor cells, as we do for the microneurotrophin BNN-20

Kata kunci ; Gender, Persamaan Gender Didalam Al-Qur’an &nbsp

“La femme modèle” from the first communicant to the affectionate mother: a dialogue between painting and moral discourse under the early Third Republic (1870-1900)

This PhD dissertation seeks to define the configuration and evolution of French women’s moral identity and social status, through works of art created during the first thirty years of the Third Republic (1870-1900). More specifically, my thesis investigates the artistic perception and visual recording of “traditional” female roles and analyses the socio-historical factors which contributed to the construction of the ideal woman. I focus on the representation of young girls’ education and First Communion and study the portrayal of maternity which was perceived both as a personal role and a republican ideal. Furthermore, I consider the institutions of marriage and family through portraits and scenes of everyday life. The woman’s relations to the Catholic Church within a secular state, as well as the notions of chastity and patriotism, are thoroughly explored. In my dissertation I prioritised nineteenth century texts, where French doctors, demographers and statesmen from different ideological backgrounds give moral guidelines concerning hygiene, breastfeeding and childcare, or analyse phenomena such as the birth rate decline. The writings of these authors who communicated major social anxieties served as an evaluative platform; more specifically, I ventured to see how French painters and illustrators participated to the most important debates of their time. Therefore, the criterion for the choice of images was not artistic excellence, but their engagement with the moral and social issues I decided to consider. Since in my thesis pictures are treated within a socio-historical context, I was challenged to achieve a balance between the visual and theoretical material, making them inter-relate effectively. Finally, my time-frame covers the three first decades of the French Third Republic and observes the succession of different governments. I investigate to what extent certain social attitudes which were developed during this period of thirty years shifted, and try to find out whether these alterations are conveyed in painting
