Isospin Asymmetry in Nuclei, Neutron Stars, and Heavy-Ion Collisions
The roles of isospin asymmetry in nuclei and neutron stars are investigated
using a range of potential and field-theoretical models of nucleonic matter.
The parameters of these models are fixed by fitting the properties of
homogeneous bulk matter and closed-shell nuclei. We discuss and unravel the
causes of correlations among the neutron skin thickness in heavy nuclei, the
pressure of beta-equilibrated matter at a density of 0.1 fm, and the
radii of moderate mass neutron stars. The influence of symmetry energy on

Field Evaluation of Herbicides on Vegetables and Small Fruits 2004
Herbicide evaluation studies on vegetables and small fruits were conducted in 2004 at the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station at Fayetteville, AR, in an effort to evaluate new herbicides, herbicide mixtures, and their application timings for weed control efficacy and crop tolerance. Results of these studies, in part, provide useful information to producers, fellow researchers, the Crop Protection Industry, and the IR-4 Minor Crop Pest Management Program in the development of potential new herbicide uses in vegetable, and fruit
The faint-galaxy hosts of gamma-ray bursts
The observed redshifts and magnitudes of the host galaxies of gamma-ray
bursts (GRBs) are compared with the predictions of three basic GRB models, in
which the comoving rate density of GRBs is (1) proportional to the cosmic star
formation rate density, (2) proportional to the total integrated stellar
density and (3) constant. All three models make the assumption that at every
epoch the probability of a GRB occuring in a galaxy is proportional to that
galaxy's broad-band luminosity. No assumption is made that GRBs are standard
candles or even that their luminosity function is narrow. All three rate
density models are consistent with the observed GRB host galaxies to date,
although model (2) is slightly disfavored relative to the others. Models (1)
and (3) make very similar predictions for host galaxy magnitude and redshift
distributions; these models will be probably not be distinguished without
measurements of host-galaxy star-formation rates. The fraction of host galaxies
fainter than 28 mag may constrain the faint end of the galaxy luminosity
function at high redshift, or, if the fraction is observed to be low, may
suggest that the bursters are expelled from low-luminosity hosts. In all
models, the probability of finding a z<0.008 GRB among a sample of 11 GRBs is
less than 10^(-4), strongly suggesting that GRB 980425, if associated with
supernova 1998bw, represents a distinct class of GRBs.Comment: 7 pages, ApJ in press, revised to incorporate yet more new and

Few-mode fibre group-delays with intermediate coupling
We study the probability density function of the group-delay in few-mode fibres, validating for the first time an analytical estimation for the maximum group-delay spread as a function of linear mode coupling for fibres with more than three LP modes
The neural correlates of semantic richness : Evidence from an fMRI study of word learning
We investigated the neural correlates of concrete nouns with either many or few semantic features. A group of 21 participants underwent two days of training and were then asked to categorize 40 newly learned words and a set of matched familiar words as living or nonliving in an MRI scanner. Our results showed that the most reliable effects of semantic richness were located in the left angular gyrus (AG) and middle temporal gyrus (MTG), where activation was higher for semantically rich than poor words. Other areas showing the same pattern included bilateral precuneus and posterior cingulate gyrus. Our findings support the view that AG and anterior MTG, as part of the multimodal network, play a significant role in representing and integrating semantic features from different input modalities. We propose that activation in bilateral precuneus and posterior cingulate gyrus reflects interplay between AG and episodic memory systems during semantic retrieval
Suppression of nonlinear distortion in few-mode fibres using strong mode coupling
In this paper, we investigate the impact of linear mode coupling on the efficiency of intermodal four-wave mixing and on the group delay statistics in few-mode fibres. The investigation will include not only the weak or strong linear coupling regimes, but also the transition region between them, the intermediate coupling regime. This analysis will allow to assess the level of coupling strength require to suppress the nonlinear distortion in a few-mode fibre below the level of distortion for single-mode propagation without mode coupling
Semi-analytical modelling of linear mode coupling in few-mode fibers
This paper reviews and extends a method for the semi-analytical solution of the coupled linear differential equations that describe the linear mode coupling arising in few-mode fibers due to waveguide imperfections. The semi-analytical solutions obtained proved to be accurate when compared to numerical solution methods. These solutions were integrated into a multi-section model with split-steps for mode dispersion and mode coupling. Simulations using this model matched the analytical predictions for the statistics of group-delays in few-mode fiber links, considering different coupling regimes with and without mode delay management
The Color-Magnitude Relation in Coma: Clues to the Age and Metallicity of Cluster Populations
We have observed three fields of the Coma cluster of galaxies with a narrow
band (modified Stromgren) filter system. Observed galaxies include 31 in the
vicinity of NGC 4889, 48 near NGC 4874, and 60 near NGC 4839 complete to
M_5500=-18 in all three subclusters. Spectrophotometric classification finds
all three subclusters of Coma to be dominated by red, E type (ellipticals/S0's)
galaxies with a mean blue fraction, f_B, of 0.10. The blue fraction increases
to fainter luminosities, possible remnants of dwarf starburst population or the
effects of dynamical friction removing bright, blue galaxies from the cluster
population by mergers. We find the color-magnitude (CM) relation to be well
defined and linear over the range of M_5500=-13 to -22. After calibration to
multi-metallicity models, bright ellipticals are found to have luminosity
weighted mean [Fe/H] values between -0.5 and +0.5, whereas low luminosity
ellipticals have [Fe/H] values ranging from -2 to solar. The lack of CM
relation in our continuum color suggests that a systematic age effect cancels
the metallicity effects in this bandpass. This is confirmed with our age index
which finds a weak correlation between luminosity and mean stellar age in
ellipticals such that the stellar populations of bright ellipticals are 2 to 3
