The ACS LCID Project. I. Short-Period Variables in the Isolated Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies Cetus & Tucana
(abridged) We present the first study of the variable star populations in the
isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) Cetus and Tucana. Based on Hubble
Space Telescope images obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys in the
F475W and F814W bands, we identified 180 and 371 variables in Cetus and Tucana,
respectively. The vast majority are RR Lyrae stars. In Cetus we also found
three anomalous Cepheids, four candidate binaries and one candidate long-period
variable (LPV), while six anomalous Cepheids and seven LPV candidates were
found in Tucana. Of the RR Lyrae stars, 147 were identified as fundamental mode
(RRab) and only eight as first-overtone mode (RRc) in Cetus, with mean periods
of 0.614 and 0.363 day, respectively. In Tucana we found 216 RRab and 82 RRc
giving mean periods of 0.604 and 0.353 day. These values place both galaxies in
the so-called Oosterhoff Gap, as is generally the case for dSph. We calculated
the distance modulus to both galaxies using different approaches based on the
properties of RRab and RRc, namely the luminosity-metallicity and
period-luminosity-metallicity relations, and found values in excellent
agreement with previous estimates using independent methods:
(m-M)_{0,Cet}=24.46+-0.12 and (m-M)_{0,Tuc}=24.74+-0.12, corresponding to
780+-40 kpc and 890+-50 kpc. We also found numerous RR Lyrae variables
pulsating in both modes simultaneously (RRd): 17 in Cetus and 60 in Tucana.
Tucana is, after Fornax, the second dSph in which such a large fraction of RRd
(~17%) has been observed. We provide the photometry and pulsation parameters
for all the variables, and compare the latter with values from the literature
for well-studied dSph of the Local Group and Galactic globular clusters.Comment: 26 pages, 24 figures, in emulateapj format. To be published in ApJ.

Titik berat penelitian hepatitis di NAMRU-2 pada saat ini adalah: I) penelitian binatang untuk mengetahui populasi reservoar HEV; 2) penggunaan model hewan untuk lebih diketahuinya transmisi HEV pada populasi reservoar yang dicurigai; 3) diketahuinya akurasi alat diagnostik yang digunakan (untuk semua marker); 4) diketahuinya lama pengeluaran virus hepatitis E pada kotoran manusia yang menderita hepatitis akut maupun dari model hewan; 5) diketahuinya insidens hepatitis E akut melalui pencarian kasus dengan menggunakan metode penelitian lapangan di masyarakat; dan 6) serokonversi infeksi hepatitis E pada anak-anak. Hubungan erat dengan berbagai universitas dan instansi pemerintah yang terkait dengan penanganan kasus-kasus hepatitis, telah dan masih menjadi bagian penting bagi suksesnya penelitian hepatitis di NAMRU-2. Hasil yang dicapai berdasarkan program penelitian di atas antara lain: 1) seminar hepatitis E di Kalimantan Barat; 2) tersedianya kemampuan diagnostik pada laboratorium setempat; 3) pembinaan peneliti di Indonesia dan Asia Tenggara dalam hal epidemiologi; serta 4) alih teknologi dalam pelaksanaan penelitian yang dapat melibatkan minat para peneliti pada penyakit hepatitis di Indonesia
Patient-Specific Metrics of Invasiveness Reveal Significant Prognostic Benefit of Resection in a Predictable Subset of Gliomas

Malignant gliomas are incurable, primary brain neoplasms noted for their potential to extensively invade brain parenchyma. Current methods of clinical imaging do not elucidate the full extent of brain invasion, making it difficult to predict which, if any, patients are likely to benefit from gross total resection. Our goal was to apply a mathematical modeling approach to estimate the overall tumor invasiveness on a patient-by-patient basis and determine whether gross total resection would improve survival in patients with relatively less invasive gliomas.
Methods
In 243 patients presenting with contrast-enhancing gliomas, estimates of the relative invasiveness of each patient's tumor, in terms of the ratio of net proliferation rate of the glioma cells to their net dispersal rate, were derived by applying a patient-specific mathematical model to routine pretreatment MR imaging. The effect of varying degrees of extent of resection on overall survival was assessed for cohorts of patients grouped by tumor invasiveness.
Results
We demonstrate that patients with more diffuse tumors showed no survival benefit (P = 0.532) from gross total resection over subtotal/biopsy, while those with nodular (less diffuse) tumors showed a significant benefit (P = 0.00142) with a striking median survival benefit of over eight months compared to sub-totally resected tumors in the same cohort (an 80% improvement in survival time for GTR only seen for nodular tumors).
Conclusions
These results suggest that our patient-specific, model-based estimates of tumor invasiveness have clinical utility in surgical decision making. Quantification of relative invasiveness assessed from routinely obtained pre-operative imaging provides a practical predictor of the benefit of gross total resection
Image-Subtraction Photometry of the Globular Cluster M3: identification of new double-mode RR Lyrae stars
We have applied the image subtraction method to the M3 dataset previously
analyzed by Corwin & Carney (2001; CC01). The new analysis produced light
curves and periods for 15 variables, bringing to 222 the total number of RR
Lyrae stars in CC01 M3 dataset. We have identified three new candidate
double-mode (RRd) variables (V13, V200, and V251) in M3. Of the newly
discovered RRd's V13 is unusual in that it has the fundamental as the dominant
pulsation mode. Two of the new candidate RRd's (V13 and V200) have period
ratios as low as 0.738-0.739. They lie separated from all previously known
RRd's in the Petersen diagram, in positions implying a large spread in mass
and/or, less likely, in heavy element mass fraction, among the M3 horizontal
branch (HB) stars. We explore mass transfer and helium enhancement as possible
explanations for the apparent spread in HB masses. We also note that the masses
derived from the RRd analyses now favor little mass loss on the red giant
branch. V200 has changed its dominant pulsation mode from fundamental to first
overtone, while V251 has changed its dominant mode from first overtone to
fundamental in the interval 1992 to 1993. Together with M3-V166 this is the
first time that RRd variables are observed to switch their dominant pulsation
modes while remaining RRd's. The phenomenon is found to occur in a one year
time-span thus suggesting that these stars are undergoing a rapid evolutionary
phase, and that both redward and blueward evolution may take place among the HB
stars in M3. The unusual behavior of the M3 RRd's is discussed and compared to
that of the RRd's identified so far in globular clusters and in the field of
our and other Local Group galaxies. We find lack of correlation between the

The burden of diarrhoea, shigellosis, and cholera in North Jakarta, Indonesia: findings from 24 months surveillance
BACKGROUND: In preparation of vaccines trials to estimate protection against shigellosis and cholera we conducted a two-year community-based surveillance study in an impoverished area of North Jakarta which provided updated information on the disease burden in the area. METHODS: We conducted a two-year community-based surveillance study from August 2001 to July 2003 in an impoverished area of North Jakarta to assess the burden of diarrhoea, shigellosis, and cholera. At participating health care providers, a case report form was completed and stool sample collected from cases presenting with diarrhoea. RESULTS: Infants had the highest incidences of diarrhoea (759/1 000/year) and cholera (4/1 000/year). Diarrhea incidence was significantly higher in boys under 5 years (387/1 000/year) than girls under 5 years (309/1 000/year; p < 0.001). Children aged 1 to 2 years had the highest incidence of shigellosis (32/1 000/year). Shigella flexneri was the most common Shigella species isolated and 73% to 95% of these isolates were resistant to ampicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, chloramphenicol and tetracycline but remain susceptible to nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, and ceftriaxone. We found an overall incidence of cholera of 0.5/1 000/year. Cholera was most common in children, with the highest incidence at 4/1 000/year in those less than 1 year of age. Of the 154 V. cholerae O1 isolates, 89 (58%) were of the El Tor Ogawa serotype and 65 (42%) were El Tor Inaba. Thirty-four percent of patients with cholera were intravenously rehydrated and 22% required hospitalization. V. parahaemolyticus infections were detected sporadically but increased from July 2002 onwards. CONCLUSION: Diarrhoea causes a heavy public health burden in Jakarta particularly in young children. The impact of shigellosis is exacerbated by the threat of antimicrobial resistance, whereas that of cholera is aggravated by its severe manifestations

Plasma levels of sphingosine 1-phosphate are strongly correlated with haematocrit, but variably restored by red blood cell transfusions
Anaemia and RBC (red blood cell) transfusion may be associated with worse clinical outcomes, especially with longer blood storage duration prior to transfusion. The mechanisms underlying these harmful effects are unknown. RBCs have been proposed to buffer plasma S1P (sphingosine 1-phosphate), a lysophospholipid essential for the maintenance of endothelial integrity and important in the regulation of haematopoietic cell trafficking. The present study examined the effect of anaemia, RBC transfusion and RBC storage duration on plasma S1P levels. Plasma S1P from 30 individuals demonstrated a linear correlation with Hct (haematocrit; R2=0.51, P<0.001) with no evidence for a plateau at Hct values as low as 19%. RBC transfusion in 23 anaemic patients with baseline mean Hct of 22.2±0.34% (value is the mean±S.D.) increased Hct to 28.3±0.6% at 72 h. Despite an Hct increase, RBC transfusion failed to elevate plasma S1P consistently. A trend towards an inverse correlation was observed between RBC storage duration and the post-transfusion increase in plasma S1P. After 30 days of storage, RBC S1P decreased to 19% of that observed in fresh (3–7-day-old) RBC segments. RBC membranes contain low levels of both S1P phosphatase and S1P lyase activities that may account for the decline in S1P levels with storage. Our results support a role for RBCs in buffering plasma S1P and identify a disturbance in the capacity after transfusion. Changes in S1P content may contribute to an RBC storage lesion. Further studies should investigate the clinical significance of alterations in circulating S1P levels and the potential value of enriching stored RBCs with S1P
Hollow-core Optical Fiber Gas Lasers (HOFGLAS): a review [Invited]
International audienceThe development of hollow core photonic crystal fibers with low losses over a broad spectral region in the near IR enabled the demonstration of a novel laser type - Hollow-core Optical Fiber Gas Laser (HOFGLAS). The laser combines attractive features of fiber lasers such as compactness and long interaction length of pump and laser radiation with those of gas lasers such as the potential for high output power and narrow line width. This paper summarizes recent developments and describes the demonstration of C2H2 and HCN prototype lasers. Avenues to extend laser emission further into the IR are discussed
