    Melt processing and properties of linear low density polyethylene-graphene nanoplatelet composites

    Composites of Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) and Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNPs) were processed using a twin screw extruder under different extrusion conditions. The effects of screw speed, feeder speed and GNP content on the electrical, thermal and mechanical properties of composites were investigated. The inclusion of GNPs in the matrix improved the thermal stability and conductivity by 2.7% and 43%, respectively. The electrical conductivity improved from 10-11 to 10-5 S/m at 150 rpm due to the high thermal stability of the GNPs and the formation of phonon and charge carrier networks in the polymer matrix. Higher extruder speeds result in a better distribution of the GNPs in the matrix and a significant increase in thermal stability and thermal conductivity. However, this effect is not significant for the electrical conductivity and tensile strength. The addition of GNPs increased the viscosity of the polymer, which will lead to higher processing power requirements. Increasing the extruder speed led to a reduction in viscosity, which is due to thermal degradation and/or chain scission. Thus, while high speeds result in better dispersions, the speed needs to be optimized to prevent detrimental impacts on the properties.</p

    Artificial Neural Microcircuits for use in Neuromorphic System Design

    Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are one of the most widely employed forms of biomorphic computation. However (unlike the biological nervous systems they draw inspiration from) the current trend is for ANNs to be structurally homogeneous. Furthermore, this structural homogeneity requires the application of complex training &amp; learning tools that produce application specific ANNs, susceptible to pitfalls like overfitting. In this paper, an alternative approach is suggested, inspired by the role played in biology by Neural Microcircuits, the so called “fundamental processing elements” of organic nervous systems. How large neural networks can be assembled using Artificial Neural Microcircuits, intended as off-the-shelf components, is articulated; before showing the results of initial work to produce a catalogue of such Microcircuits though the use of Novelty Search

    Homeostatic Fault Tolerance in Spiking Neural Networks : A Dynamic Hardware Perspective

    Fault tolerance is a remarkable feature of biological systems and their self-repair capability influence modern electronic systems. In this paper, we propose a novel plastic neural network model, which establishes homeostasis in a spiking neural network. Combined with this plasticity and the inspiration from inhibitory interneurons, we develop a fault-resilient robotic controller implemented on an FPGA establishing obstacle avoidance task. We demonstrate the proposed methodology on a spiking neural network implemented on Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA. The system is able to maintain stable firing (tolerance ±10%) with a loss of up to 75% of the original synaptic inputs to a neuron. Our repair mechanism has minimal hardware overhead with a tuning circuit (repair unit) which consumes only three slices/neuron for implementing a threshold voltage-based homeostatic fault-tolerant unit. The overall architecture has a minimal impact on power consumption and, therefore, supports scalable implementations.     The 'Short Course Oncology Treatment' (SCOT) trial

    6 months of oxaliplatin-containing chemotherapy is usually given as adjuvant treatment for stage 3 colorectal cancer. We investigated whether 3 months of oxaliplatin-containing chemotherapy would be non-inferior to the usual 6 months of treatment. Methods: The SCOT study was an international, randomised, phase 3, non-inferiority trial done at 244 centres. Patients aged 18 years or older with high-risk stage II and stage III colorectal cancer underwent central randomisation with minimisation for centre, choice of regimen, sex, disease site, N stage, T stage, and the starting dose of capecitabine. Patients were assigned (1:1) to receive 3 months or 6 months of adjuvant oxaliplatin-containing chemotherapy. The chemotherapy regimens could consist of CAPOX (capecitabine and oxaliplatin) or FOLFOX (bolus and infused fluorouracil with oxaliplatin). The regimen was selected before randomisation in accordance with choices of the patient and treating physician. The primary study endpoint was disease-free survival and the non-inferiority margin was a hazard ratio of 1·13. The primary analysis was done in the intention-to-treat population and safety was assessed in patients who started study treatment. This trial is registered with ISRCTN, number ISRCTN59757862

    Soluble beta amyloid evokes alteration in brain norepinephrine levels: role of nitric oxide and interleukin-1

    Strong evidence showed neurotoxic properties of beta amyloid (Aβ) and its pivotal role in the Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. Beside, experimental data suggest that Aβ may have physiological roles considering that such soluble peptide is produced and secreted during normal cellular activity. There is now suggestive evidence that neurodegenerative conditions, like AD, involve nitric oxide (NO) in their pathogenesis. Nitric oxide also possess potent neuromodulatory actions in brain regions, such as prefrontal cortex (PFC), hippocampus (HIPP), and nucleus accumbens (NAC). In the present study, we evaluated the effect of acute Aβ injection on norepinephrine (NE) content before and after pharmacological manipulations of nitrergic system in above mentioned areas. Moreover, effects of the peptide on NOS activity were evaluated. Our data showed that 2 h after i.c.v. soluble Aβ administration, NE concentrations were significantly increased in the considered areas along with increased iNOS activity. Pre-treatment with NOS inhibitors, 7-Nitroindazole (7-NI), and N6-(1-iminoethyl)-L-lysine-dihydrochloride (L-NIL), reversed Aβ-induced changes. Ultimately, pharmacological block of interleukin1 (IL-1) receptors prevented NE increase in all brain regions. Taken together our findings suggest that NO and IL-1 are critically involved in regional noradrenergic alterations induced by soluble Aβ injection

    Assessing the impact of posture on diaphragm morphology and function using an open upright MRI system – a pilot study

    PurposeThe diaphragm is the most important muscle of respiration. Disorders of the diaphragm can have a deleterious impact on respiratory function. We aimed to evaluate the use of an open-configuration upright low-field MRI system to assess diaphragm morphology and function in patients with bilateral diaphragm weakness (BDW) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with hyperinflation.MethodThe study was approved by the National Research Ethics Committee, and written consent was obtained. We recruited 20 healthy adult volunteers, six subjects with BDW, and five subjects with COPD with hyperinflation. We measured their vital capacity in the upright and supine position, after which they were scanned on the 0.5 T MRI system during 10-second breath-holds at end-expiration and end-inspiration in both positions. We developed and applied image analysis methods to measure the volume under the dome, maximum excursion of hemidiaphragms, and anterior-posterior and left-right extension of the diaphragm.ResultsAll participants were able to complete the scanning protocol. The patients found scanning in the upright position more comfortable than the supine position. All differences in the supine inspiratory-expiratory parameters, excluding left-right extension, were significantly smaller in the BDW and COPD groups compared with healthy volunteers. No significant correlation was found between the postural change in diaphragm morphology and vital capacity in either group.ConclusionOur combined upright-supine MR imaging approach facilitates the assessment of the impact of posture on diaphragm morphology and function in patients with BDW and those with COPD with hyperinflation
