Sobre complexitat gramatical i complexitat de processament

En aquest article revisem breument una qüestió central de la lingüística teòrica actual: ¿fins a quin punt els mecanismes subjacents al coneixement lingüístic són independents dels mecanismes involucrats en el processament del llenguatge? Per articular una resposta mínimament fonamentada i detallada d'aquesta qüestió, il·lustrem alguns fenòmens referents a la minimització de la complexitat gramatical i d'altres referents a la minimització de la complexitat de processament. Finalment, presentem una sèrie d'arguments segons els quals no podem reduir les restriccions de complexitat gramatical a restriccions de complexitat de processament, ni viceversa, tot i que deixarem com una pregunta oberta si una teoria unificadora és possible

Elaboració d'un pla d'emergència i aplicació en un simulacre

La finalitat que té aquest Pla d’emergència, és la de realitzar l’estudi de les condicions de seguretat contra incendis que es reuneixen a l’edifici, les instal·lacions i els equips del centre de treball, situat a la Zona d’Activitats Logístiques ZAL, al port de Barcelona, per tal de poder obtenir un millor coneixement de las mateixes per part del personal propi del centre i del Serveis d’emergència externs. A més a més, servirà per poder establir un sistema organitzatiu que permeti actuar en cas d’emergència de forma ràpida i segura davant d’aquesta. Structure dependence and linear order. Clarifications and foundations

According to Chomsky (2010, 2013) and Berwick and colleagues (2011), the structuredependence principle suggests that linear order is a reflex of the sensory-motor system and plays no role in syntax and semantics. However, when these authors use the expression linear order, they seem to refer exclusively to the literal precedence/temporal relation among terminals in linguistic objects. This narrow use, which is very common within linguistics, differs from the technical use in a noninnocuous way and does not allow us to exploit the unificational force that the concept of order can have for minimalist investigations. Here I follow Fortuny and Corominas-Murtra's (2009) formal definition of the syntactic procedure, which capitalizes on the foundational set-theoretical concept of nest. I show how the structure-dependence principle can be derived from a local definition of syntactic domain while retaining the idea that central concepts of configurational and transformational syntactic theories are orders

The Witness Set Constraint

This article is initially concerned with a famous constraint on the class of possible determiners in natural languages: the so-called Conservativity Constraint. We shall briefly illustrate the force of this constraint and infor- mally sketch Keenan and Stavi (1986)'s view according to which the Con- servativity Constraint derives from the boolean structure of natural lan- guage semantics. We shall proceed to discuss certain well-known linguistic categories that have been argued to be interpreted by non-conservative functions: only and the relative proportional determiners many and few. We shall take the challenge posed by the existence of these categories in order to propose an alternative to the Conservativity Constraint. This alternative will be dubbed the Witness Set Constraint, which is inspired in Barwise and Cooper (1981)'s considerations on the semantic process- ing of generalized quantifiers. We shall defend that the proposed con- straint does not suffer from the empirical shortcomings that have been attributed to the Conservativity Constraint, and indeed, we shall argue in detail that it correctly predicts (a) the existence of conservative de- terminers, (b) the non-existence of certain non-conservative determiners, such as inner negations, cardinal comparison determiners and the con- verses of non-trivial proportional determiners, and most importantly, (c) the existence of the non-conservative functions denoted by only and the relative proportional determiners many and few. This line of reasoning suggests that the class of functions from properties to sets of properties denoted in natural languages typically by determiners is constrained by a principle that simplifies the semantic processing of generalized quantifiers
