    Get PDF
This paper aims to identify the most representative variables of popular marathon runners' psychological state a few days or hours prior to a race through an analysis of content based on interviews with a sample of expert runners. The sample used and qualitative and deductive analysis procedure are described. The results identified variables such as cognitive anxiety and arousal and self confidence levels in relation to others, such as motivation and perception of physical state, which are included in a theoretical model. Two different models were identified when self-confidence is high or low. A list of possible items for constructing a questionnaire on psychological states before a marathon is suggested

In the days prior the marathon 1457 recreational runners were helped with psychological counselling using both a handout with practical recommendations to prepare for the race (including goal setting, planning for the race, anticipating main difficulties, preparing to control negative thoughts, and arousal control), information related to their scores in the CSAI-2 (somatic anxiety, cognitive anxiety and self-confidence), and attention to specific demands. After the race, psychologists provided psychological support to runners who attended the service of Physiotherapy to receive massage. Likewise, before the race, the medical personnel involved in te marathon (physiotherapists and nurses) received from sport psychologists practical guidelines to improve their work with the runners. Few weeks after the marathon, 452 runners answered to a survey to assess this programme. Data were also obtained through global reports from the sport psychologists and a reduced number of physiotherapists. Most runners found useful, and many of them very useful, the counselling provided before the race, especially runners who achieved their goals for the marathon, highlighting the information to control negative thoughts and related to selfconfidence. Global reports of runners, sport psychologists and physiotherapists, also supported the utility of psychological intervention after the race, especially to help runners to relax, to tolerate pain while receiving massage, to show their feelings and to gain control over the experience. The article explains all the characteristics of this programme and pinpoints its contribution to Sport Psychology, the role of sport psychologists within multidisciplinary teams, and the contribution of sport psychologists in recreational marathons

Objective: To examine relevant differences in the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children aged 2-15 years according to different sets of criteria (Orbegozo Foundation, International Obesity Task Force and World Health Organization), and how their use affects the trends in obesity recorded for both sexes between 1995 and 2011 in Spain. Method: Cross-sectional study, a population between 2 and 15 years. Three diagnosis criteria of overweight and obesity were be used. Results: The boys according to the three criteria, showed higher values of overweight and obesity compared to the girls. The lowest levels of overweight and obesity were observed using the Orbegozo tables. Discussion: The prevalence of overweight and obesity varies significantly according to the criteria used to define overweight and obesity. The percentiles of the Foundation Orbegozo gave the lowest estimates and the standards of growth of the World Health Organization were higher

Given the concern with the practice of healthy sport activities, the aim of this study is to find what levels of eudaimonic psychological well-being (Ryff, 1989a) and general health, related with their perceived autonomy, and their record of sports injuries in 85 football players in Mexico. We used the Escala de Bienestar Psicológico, EBP, Díaz et al., 2006 to measure psychological well-being. Perceived autonomy was assessed by the Escala de Autonomía Percibida en el Deporte (Balaguer, Castillo and Duda, 2008) and general and emotional health by the Spanish version (Sánchez and Dresch, 2008) of the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12, Goldberg and Hillier, 1979). Also, records of injuries were assessed using an ad hoc questionnaire derived from the Global psychological model of sports injuries (Olmedilla and Garcia-Mas, 2009). The results show that players have a bad perception of general and emotional health, but have good levels of psychological well-being in relation to their perceived autonomy. The number of injuries -not their duration- is related to their poor perception of general and emotional health while it is negatively related to the volitional aspect of perceived autonomy. Their injuries are seen to be frequently associated with pre-competitive anxiety and stress

articuloThis study considered the application of two exogenous enzymes, xylanase (XYL) and cellulase (CELL), and maguey extract (ME), (applying 1 ml per kg as fresh matter) and a control (without additive) in four maize silage varieties (San Diego, Cacahuacintle, P-1832 and Victoria), to investigate their effect on the chemical composition (CC), gas production (GP) and in vitro ruminal fermentation. The GP was measured at 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72 and 96 hours of incubation. Dry matter disappearance (DMD), organic matter disappearance (OMD), metabolizable energy (ME), and short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were determined after 96 h of incubation. Data were analyzed using a completely randomized design with a 4×4 factorial arrangement with three replications. The CC showed a significant effect (P<0.05) for varieties with the exception of organic matter (OM), and the inclusion of additives increased the dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP). A significant effect (P<0.01) was observed for the varieties in the GP parameters and ruminal fermentation. The addition of XYL, CEL and ME promoted dry matter degradation and increased energy availability, with increased in vitro gas production

Uterine sarcomas : clinical practice guidelines for diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up, by Spanish group for research on sarcomas (GEIS)

Uterine sarcomas are very infrequent and heterogeneous entities. Due to its rarity, pathological diagnosis, surgical management, and systemic treatment are challenging. Treatment decision process in these tumors should be taken in a multidisciplinary tumor board. Available evidence is low and, in many cases, based on case series or clinical trials in which these tumors have been included with other soft tissue sarcoma. In these guidelines, we have tried to summarize the most relevant evidence in the diagnosis, staging, pathological disparities, surgical management, systemic treatment, and follow-up of uterine sarcomas

    Get PDF
