Superconducting gap anisotropy of LuNi2B2C thin films from microwave surface impedance measurements
Surface impedance measurements of LuNi2B2C superconducting thin films as a
function of temperature have been performed down to 1.5 K and at 20 GHz using a
dielectric resonator technique. The magnetic penetration depth closely
reproduces the standard B.C.S. result, but with a reduced value of the energy
gap at low temperature. These data provide evidence for an anisotropic s-wave
character of the order parameter symmetry in LuNi2B2C. From the evaluation of
the real part of complex conductivity, we have observed constructive (type II)
coherence effects in the electromagnetic absorption below Tc.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
Species Review of Amphibian Extinction Risks in Madagascar: Conclusions from the Global Amphibian Assessment
We assessed the extinction risks of Malagasy amphibians by evaluating their distribution, occurrence in protected areas, population trends, habitat quality, and prevalence in commercial trade. We estimated and mapped the distribution of each of the 220 described Malagasy species and applied, for the first time, the IUCN Red List categories and criteria to all species described at the time of the assessment. Nine species were categorized as critically endangered, 21 as endangered, and 25 as vulnerable. The most threatened species occur on the High Plateau and/or have been subjected to overcollection for the pet trade, but restricted extent of occurrence and ongoing habitat destruction were identified as the most important factors influencing extinction threats. The two areas with the majority of threatened species were the northern Tsaratanana-Marojejy-Masoala highlands and the southeastern Anosy Mountains. The current system of protected areas includes 82% of the threatened amphibian species. Of the critically endangered species, 6 did not occur in any protected area. For conservation of these species we recommend the creation of a reserve for the species of the Mantella aurantiaca group, the inclusion of two Scaphiophryne species in the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species Appendix II, and the suspension of commercial collecting for Mantella cowani . Hybrid photonic-bandgap accelerating cavities
In a recent investigation, we studied two-dimensional point-defected photonic
bandgap cavities composed of dielectric rods arranged according to various
representative periodic and aperiodic lattices, with special emphasis on
possible applications to particle acceleration (along the longitudinal axis).
In this paper, we present a new study aimed at highlighting the possible
advantages of using hybrid structures based on the above dielectric
configurations, but featuring metallic rods in the outermost regions, for the
design of extremely-high quality factor, bandgap-based, accelerating
resonators. In this framework, we consider diverse configurations, with
different (periodic and aperiodic) lattice geometries, sizes, and
dielectric/metal fractions. Moreover, we also explore possible improvements
attainable via the use of superconducting plates to confine the electromagnetic
field in the longitudinal direction. Results from our comparative studies,
based on numerical full-wave simulations backed by experimental validations (at
room and cryogenic temperatures) in the microwave region, identify the
candidate parametric configurations capable of yielding the highest quality

Dispersion of carbon nanotubes in melt compounded polypropylene based composites investigated by THz spectroscopy
We investigate the use of Terahertz (THz) Time Domain Spectroscopy (TDS) as a tool for the measurement of the index dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in polypropylene (PP) based composites. Samples containing 0.5% by volume concentration of non-functionalized and functionalized carbon nanotubes are prepared by melt compounding technology. Results indicate that the THz response of the investigated nanocomposites is strongly dependent on the kind of nanotube functionalization, which in turn impacts on the level of dispersion inside the polymer matrix. We show that specific dielectric parameters such as the refractive index and the absorption coefficient measured by THz spectroscopy can be both correlated to the index of dispersion as estimated using conventional optical microscopy
Two new species of terrestrial microhylid frogs (Microhylidae: Cophylinae: Rhombophryne) from northeastern Madagascar
We describe two new microhylid frog species of the genus Rhombophryne from the humid forests of northeastern Madagascar: Rhombophryne botabota sp. n. and R. savaka sp. n. e former is a medium-sized species, characterised by darkened lateral sides of the head (present in only one other congener, R. laevipes) and a unique combination of morphological, osteological, and molecular characters. e latter is a rather small species, characterised by medially undivided vomerine teeth with two large lateral diastemata, and presence of inguinal spots. Rhombophryne savaka sp. n. is the first species of the genus known from Makira Natural Park, and is reported also from Marojejy National Park and Ambolokopatrika (Betaolana Forest). Although its distribution range is relatively large compared to those of congeners, its known extent of occurrence is less than 2,000 km2. As deforestation and habitat degradation persist as threats despite formal legal protection, we suggest an IUCN Red List status of Vulnerable for this species. Rhombophryne savaka sp. n. is possibly endemic to the Marojejy National Park, like several other Rhombophryne species, but is unusual in being found at a relatively low altitude. As such, it is likely to be at high risk of habitat loss and decreasing range, and we propose a status of Endangered for it. We discuss the a nities of these new species and the variability of calls in this genus

In a recent paper Tettamanzi et al (2009 Nanotechnology \bf{20} 465302)
describe the fabrication of superconducting Nb nanowires using a focused ion
beam. They interpret their conductivity data in the framework of thermal and
quantum phase slips below . In the following we will argue that their
analysis is inappropriate and incomplete, leading to contradictory results.

Threatened by legislative conservationism? The case of the critically endangered Aeolian Lizard
Species-based conservation legislation needs to be based on sound scientific data and updated taxonomic knowledge. European Union environmental legislation is among the most advanced in the world, yet there is not a clear and regular mechanism to update species' lists of Habitats Directive Annexes according the latest available scientific data. Here we reviewed the situation of the endemic Aeolian lizard Podarcis raffonei and indicate it as a case-study of possible ongoing species extinction into the Mediterranean biodiversity hotspot as the result of failure to update lists of EU protected species. We recommend to implement a mechanism of periodical revision of the Annexes of the Habitats Directive with particular attention to endemic EU species included in the IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered
Phase-sensitive Evidence for d-wave Pairing Symmetry in Electron-doped Cuprate Superconductors
We present phase-sensitive evidence that the electron-doped cuprates
Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4-y (NCCO) and Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4-y (PCCO) have d-wave pairing
symmetry. This evidence was obtained by observing the half-flux quantum effect,
using a scanning SQUID microscope, in c-axis oriented films of NCCO or PCCO
epitaxially grown on tricrystal [100] SrTiO3 substrates designed to be
frustrated for a d(x2-y2) order parameter. Samples with two other
configurations, designed to b unfrustrated for a d-wave superconductor, do not

Anisotropic conductivity of Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-\delta} films at submillimeter wavelengths
The anisotropic conductivity of thin NdCeCuO
films was measured in the frequency range 8 cm 40 cm and
for temperatures 4 K K. A tilted sample geometry allowed to extract
both, in-plane and c-axis properties. The in-plane quasiparticle scattering
rate remains unchanged as the sample becomes superconducting. The temperature
dependence of the in-plane conductivity is reasonably well described using the
Born limit for a d-wave superconductor. Below T_{{\rm C}%} the c-axis
dielectric constant changes sign at the screened c-axis plasma
frequency. The temperature dependence of the c-axis conductivity closely
follows the linear in T behavior within the plane.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
