    Spatiotemporal Coherent Control of Light through a Multiple Scattering Medium with the Multispectral Transmission Matrix

    We report the broadband characterization of the propagation of light through a multiple scattering medium by means of its multispectral transmission matrix. Using a single spatial light modulator, our approach enables the full control of both the spatial and spectral properties of an ultrashort pulse transmitted through the medium. We demonstrate spatiotemporal focusing of the pulse at any arbitrary position and time with any desired spectral shape. Our approach opens new perspectives for fundamental studies of light-matter interaction in disordered media, and has potential applications in sensing, coherent control, and imaging

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to identify the variables that predict the revolving door phenomenon in psychiatric hospital at the moment of a second admission. METHODS: The sample consisted of 3,093 patients who have been followed during 5 to 24 years after their first hospital admission due to schizophrenia, and affective or psychotic disorders. Those who had had four or more admissions during the study period were considered as revolving door patients. Logistic regression analyses were used to assess the impact of gender, age, marital status, urban conditions, diagnosis, mean period of stay on the first admission, interval between the first and second admissions on the patterns of hospitalization. RESULTS: The variables with the highest predictive power for readmission were the interval between first and second admissions, and the length of stay in the first admission. CONCLUSIONS: These data may help public health planners in providing optimal care to a small group of patients with more effective utilization of the available services.OBJETIVO: Identificar as variáveis preditoras do fenômeno de reinternações (recidividade) em hospital psiquiátrico no momento da segunda internação. MÉTODOS: A amostra consistiu em 3.093 pacientes com diagnósticos de esquizofrenia, transtorno afetivo e psicose não orgânica acompanhados durante um período de, no mínimo, 5 anos e, no máximo, 24 anos. Foram considerados pacientes recidivistas os que tiveram 4 ou mais internações no período do estudo. Foi utilizado o modelo de regressão logística para análise do impacto das variáveis sexo, idade, estado civil, cidade de residência, diagnóstico, tempo de permanência na primeira internação, tempo entre a primeira e a segunda internação, segundo o padrão de re-hospitalização. RESULTADOS: As variáveis com maior poder de predição foram tempo entre a primeira e a segunda internação, tempo de permanência na primeira internação e diagnóstico de esquizofrenia. CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados são importantes para o planejamento de saúde pública, com o intuito de promover melhores cuidados a um grupo de pacientes pequeno, mas com um alto impacto na utilização do serviço

    Features of host cell invasion by different infective forms of Trypanosoma cruzi

    Through its life cycle from the insect vector to mammalian hosts Trypanosoma cruzi has developed clever strategies to reach the intracellular milieu where it grows sheltered from the hosts' immune system. We have been interested in several aspects of in vitro interactions of different infective forms of the parasite with cultured mammalian cells. We have observed that not only the classically infective trypomastigotes but also amastigotes, originated from the extracellular differentiation of trypomastigotes, can infect cultured cells.     Gauge-invariant screening masses and static quark free energies in Nf=2+1 QCD at nonzero baryon density

    We discuss the extension of gauge-invariant electric and magnetic screening masses in the quark-gluon plasma to the case of a finite baryon density, defining them in terms of a matrix of Polyakov loop correlators. We present lattice results for Nf=2+1 QCD with physical quark masses, obtained using the imaginary chemical potential approach, which indicate that the screening masses increase as a function of μB. A separate analysis is carried out for the theoretically interesting case μB/T=3iπ, where charge conjugation is not explicitly broken and the usual definition of the screening masses can be used for temperatures below the Roberge-Weiss transition. Finally, we investigate the dependence of the static quark free energy on the baryon chemical potential, showing that it is a decreasing function of μB, which displays a peculiar behavior as the pseudocritical transition temperature at μB=0 is approached

    Body composition in Italian and Danish women

    Summary The objective of this cross-sectional study was to compare the body composition and fat distribution measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DPX, Lunar) in different age decades of agematched Danish and Italian women. The subjects comprised 133 healthy Italian women (age 20± 60 years) age-matched to a representative sub-sample of healthy Danish women (n 375). Total and abdominal body fat tissue mass were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Italian women were shorter and fatter compared with age-matched Danish women, but in middle-age, had a less abdominal fat distribution. There was no difference in total body bone mineral density

    ALL blasts drive primary mesenchymal stromal cells to increase asparagine availability during asparaginase treatment

    Mechanisms underlying the resistance of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) blasts to L-asparaginase are still incompletely known. Here we demonstrate that human primary bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) successfully adapt to L-asparaginase and markedly protect leukemic blasts from the enzyme-dependent cytotoxicity through an amino acid tradeoff. ALL blasts synthesize and secrete glutamine, thus increasing extracellular glutamine availability for stromal cells. In turn, MSCs use glutamine, either synthesized through glutamine synthetase (GS) or imported, to produce asparagine, which is then extruded to sustain asparagine-auxotroph leukemic cells. GS inhibition prevents mesenchymal cells adaptation to L-asparaginase, lowers glutamine secretion by ALL blasts, and markedly hinders the protection exerted by MSCs on leukemic cells. The pro-survival amino acid exchange is hindered by the inhibition or silencing of the asparagine efflux transporter SNAT5, which is induced in mesenchymal cells by ALL blasts. Consistently, primary MSCs from ALL patients express higher levels of SNAT5 (P <.05), secrete more asparagine (P <.05), and protect leukemic blasts (P <.05) better than MSCs isolated from healthy donors. In conclusion, ALL blasts arrange a pro-leukemic amino acid trade-off with bone marrow mesenchymal cells, which depends on GS and SNAT5 and promotes leukemic cell survival during L-asparaginase treatment
