Microscope and microâ camera assessment of Schneiderian membrane perforation via transcrestal sinus floor elevation: A randomized ex vivo study
ObjectiveWe sought to assess the effectiveness of using a microscope and nonâ invasive camera for assessing sinus membrane perforations during transcrestal sinus floor elevation (TSFE).Materials and methodsFive fresh human cadaver heads corresponding to eight maxillary sinuses (six bilateral and two unilateral) underwent 4 TSFEs per sinus (a total of 32 single site elevations). Each elevation was randomly assigned to receive a three or six mm membrane elevation height (MEH). A microscope and microâ camera were used to assess the sinus membrane perforation. Afterwards, radiological and clinical membrane perforation assessments were performed. The statistical analysis results are expressed using the means, standard deviations, range values of the residual ridge height (RRH), residual ridge width (RRW), sinus membrane thickness (SMT) and incidence of perforation (IoP). Generalized linear methods were used to test for the correlation of RRH and MEH to the microscope and microâ camera perforation assessments and the correlation of microscope and microâ camera assessments with the postâ operative CBCT and crestal liquid evaluation.ResultsThe cumulative percentage of IoP was 40.62%, (23.07% with 3 mm MEH, and 76.92% with 6 mm MEH, p < 0.05). The perforation assessed using either the microscope or microâ camera coincided with the postâ operative CBCT and crestal liquid assessment in 87.55% sites. Evaluating LINE-1 methylation in cleft lip tissues and its association with early pregnancy exposures
Aim: To pilot investigation of methylation of long interspersed nucleotide element-1 in lip tissues from infants with nonsyndromic cleft lip, and its association with maternal periconceptional exposures. Methods: The lateral and medial sides of the cleft lips of 23 affected infants were analyzed for long interspersed nucleotide element-1 methylation by bisulfite conversion and pyrosequencing. Results: The medial side showed 1.8% higher methylation compared with the lateral side; p = 0.031, particularly in male infants (2.7% difference; p = 0.011) or when the mothers did not take folic acid during periconceptional period (2.4% difference; p = 0.011). These results were not statistically significant when Bonferroni adjustment was used. Conclusion: The observed differences in DNA methylation, although nonsignificant after correction for multiple comparisons, suggest that differential regulation of the two sides may impact lip fusion and warrant larger-scale replication
Threshold 3He and 3H Transverse Electron Scattering Response Functions
The threshold transverse response functions R_T(q,omega) for 3He and 3H are
calculated using the AV18 nucleon-nucleon potential, the UrbanaIX three-body
force, and the Coulomb potential. Final states are completely taken into
account via the Lorentz integral transform technique. Consistent two-body pi-
and rho-meson exchange currents as deduced using the Arenh\"ovel-Schwamb
technique are included. The convergence of the method is shown and a comparison
of the corresponding MEC contribution is made to that of a consistent MEC for
the meson theoretical r-space BonnA potential. The response R_T is calculated
in the threshold region at q=174, 324, and 487 MeV/c and compared with
available data. The strong MEC contributions in the threshold region are nicely
confirmed by the data at q=324 and 487 MeV/c although some differences between
theoretical and experimental results remain. A comparison is also made with
other calculations, where the same theoretical input is used. The agreement is
generally rather good, but leaves also some space for further improvement.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
The role of clothing in thermal comfort: how people dress in a temperate and humid climate in Brazil
Abstract Thermal insulation from clothing is one of the most important input variables used to predict the thermal comfort of a building's occupants. This paper investigates the clothing pattern in buildings with different configurations located in a temperate and humid climate in Brazil. Occupants of two kinds of buildings (three offices and two university classrooms) assessed their thermal environment through 'right-here-right-now' questionnaires, while at the same time indoor climatic measurements were carried out in situ (air temperature and radiant temperature, air speed and humidity). A total of 5,036 votes from 1,161 occupants were collected. Results suggest that the clothing values adopted by occupants inside buildings were influenced by: 1) climate and seasons of the year; 2) different configurations and indoor thermal conditions; and 3) occupants' age and gender. Significant intergenerational and gender differences were found, which might be explained by differences in metabolic rates and fashion. The results also indicate that there is a great opportunity to exceed the clothing interval of the thermal comfort zones proposed by international standards such as ASHRAE 55 (2013) - 0.5 to 1.0 clo - and thereby save energy from cooling and heating systems, without compromising the occupants' indoor thermal comfort
The Thermal Structural Transition of α-Crystallin Inhibits the Heat Induced Self-Aggregation
-crystallin, the major constituent of human lens, is a member of the heat-shock proteins family and it is known to have a quaternary structural transition at . The presence of calcium ions and/or temperature changes induce supramolecular self-aggregation, a process of relevance in the cataractogenesis. Here we investigate the potential effect of the bovine -crystallin's structural transition on the self-aggregation process. Along all the temperatures investigated, aggregation proceeds by forming intermediate molecular assemblies that successively aggregate in clusters. The final morphology of the aggregates, above and below , is similar, but the aggregation kinetics are completely different. The size of the intermediate molecular assemblies, and their repulsive energy barrier show a marked increase while crossing . Our results highlight the key role of heat modified form of -crystallin in protecting from aggregation and preserving the transparency of the lens under hyperthermic conditions

Levodopa Equivalent Dose of Safinamide: A Multicenter, Longitudinal, Case-Control Study
Background
Effects of dopaminergic medications used to treat Parkinson's disease (PD) may be compared with each other by using conversion factors, calculated as Levodopa equivalent dose (LED). However, current LED proposals on MAO-B inhibitors (iMAO-B) safinamide and rasagiline are still based on empirical approaches.
Objectives
To estimate LED of safinamide 50 and 100 mg.
Methods
In this multicenter, longitudinal, case–control study, we retrospectively reviewed clinical charts of 500 consecutive PD patients with motor complications and treated with (i) safinamide 100 mg (N = 130), safinamide 50 mg (N = 144), or rasagiline 1 mg (N = 97) for 9 ± 3 months and a control group of patients never treated with any iMAO-B (N = 129).
Results
Major baseline features (age, sex, disease duration and stage, severity of motor signs and motor complications) were similar among the groups. Patients on rasagiline had lower UPDRS-II scores and Levodopa dose than control subjects. After a mean follow-up of 8.8-to-10.1 months, patients on Safinamide 50 mg and 100 mg had lower UPDRS-III and OFF-related UPDRS-IV scores than control subjects, who in turn had larger increase in total LED than the three iMAO-B groups. After adjusting for age, disease duration, duration of follow-up, baseline values and taking change in UPDRS-III scores into account (sensitivity analysis), safinamide 100 mg corresponded to 125 mg LED, whereas safinamide 50 mg and rasagiline 1 mg equally corresponded to 100 mg LED.
Conclusions
We used a rigorous approach to calculate LED of safinamide 50 and 100 mg. Large prospective pragmatic trials are needed to replicate our findings
