1.25 mm Observations of a Complete Sample of IRAS Galaxies: (II) Dust Properties

Get PDF
We present 1.25 mm continuum data for a southern galaxy sample selected from the IRAS PSC and complete to S_60=2 Jy. Two thirds of the galaxies have been detected and significant limits on the remaining objects have been set. We find, on a statistical basis, indications that the dust emission in these galaxies is somewhat more centrally concentrated than that of the optical light, possibly tracing a higher metal content in the inner galactic regions. This result also allows to estimate the aperture corrections to the millimetric data. The latter, together with IRAS photometric data, have been used to compare the broad-band FIR/mm spectra with a simple dust model. According to their far-IR/mm spectrum, the sample galaxies show a dichothomy: almost half of the objects, those displaying bright 25-60um fluxes ascribed to warm dust residing in 'starburst' regions, are characterized by higher values of the bolometric (optical + FIR) luminosity, of the dust-to-gas mass ratio, of the dust optical depths and of the overall extinction. A complementary class of objects dominated by cold dust ('cirrus') shows opposite trends. Because of the favourable observational setup, selection wavelength and completeness, we believe these data provide an exhaustive and unbiased view of dust properties in spiral galaxies.Comment: 9 pg Latex file (using mn.sty) gzip'd tar'd file including 7 ps figures and 3 tables. to appear in MNRA

How many active galaxies and QSOs will future Space Missions detect?

Averaged spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of active and starburst galaxies from the 12 micron sample in the Local Universe and Quasars, from an optically selected sample at a mean redshift =0.7, are built from optical/near-IR/far-IR (IRAS & ISO) photometric observations. These SEDs are then used to predict at various redshifts the number of Seyfert type 1 and type 2, starburst, normal galaxies, and quasars, that will be detected by future Space Missions dedicated to far-infrared and submillimeter astronomy, like SIRTF and Herschel. These predictions are then compared with the expected capabilities and detection limits of future deep far-IR surveys. Possible ways to identify AGN candidates on far-IR colour-colour plots for follow-up observations are then explored.Comment: accepted in Ap

Translation and historiography : the role of translators writing the ‘true’ history of the Christian church in post-reformation London

Get PDF
In this paper I propose to discuss the early English translations of the key text of Christian ecclesiastical historiography, Eusebius’ Ecclesiastical History, to highlight the contribution of their authors to the English language and to the writing of Church history in English. The paper will be three-fold: it will briefly explain the centrality of historiography in the wake of the Reformation; it will present selected evidence of the translators’ own description of the scope, purpose and significance of their activity; and it will exemplify the impact of their work on the English language

The pragmatics of citation in a digital corpus of early modern English prose writing

Get PDF
Citations in contemporary writing perform a variety of functions: they supply verifiable links to sources, they help define the theoretical framework on which a specific text is grounded, and they can help outline a writer’s field or niche. Furthermore, they can provide justification for arguments, they can work as tools for supporting claims, and they can be a strategy to emphasise the relevance of specific points in a text. Yet the practice of citation has undergone changes through the centuries, so that current definitions may not adequately reflect their forms and functions in early modern textuality. Building on Ken Hyland’s model of citation in academic discourse and within the framework of historical pragmatics, the paper analyses examples of citations in a corpus of early modern texts to describe their language, forms and to detect their discursive pragmatic functions. The analysis is carried out on a digital corpus of factual prose writing (historiography) using a digital corpus manager and text analysis software (SketchEngine). The paper aims to bring out how early modern English writers would encode their relationship with sources through language: what forms of citation did they use? Could different practices of citation reflect different ideas about originality and authorship? Can we work out a pragmatics of citations to reveal something about the intellectual processes of reference, appropriation, imitation and borrowing

Two English Translations of Eusebius’ Ecclesiastical Histories: A Lexical Analysis

Get PDF
With over three hundred quotations, Meredith Hanmer’s translation of Eusebius' "Auncient Ecclesiastical Histories" (London, 1577, STC 10572) is one of the top 1000 sources of the Oxford English Dictionary. Hanmer was not the first translator of the Church history, however. The first five books survive in a manuscript translation by the niece of Sir Thomas More, Mary Roper Clark Basset, which has been dated between 1547 and 1553. No study of the relationship between Hanmer’s and Basset’s translations has been undertaken so far, a gap in the state of the art that this note intends to remedy starting from a comparison of their vocabulary

Two early modern Celtic-English glossaries

Get PDF
Even before a systematic study of the Celtic languages began, Tudor scholars were collecting lexicographical, phonological and etymological information about them. The evidence that has survived indicates the currency of the arguments in favour of the relatedness of Irish and Welsh, something which bears implications for their relationship to English. The paper considers two relatively unknown lists or tables of Celtic-English equivalents to understand their scope, purpose and authorship

Polariton Dispersion Law in Periodic Bragg and Near-Bragg Multiple Quantum Well Structures

The structure of polariton spectrum is analyzed for periodic multiple quantum well structures with periods at or close to Bragg resonance condition at the wavelength of the exciton resonance. The results obtained used to discuss recent reflection and luminescent experiments by M. H"{u}bner et al [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 83}, 2841 (1999)] carried out with long multiple quantum well structures. It is argued that the discussion of quantum well structures with large number of wells is more appropriate in terms of normal modes of infinite periodic structures rather then in terms of super- and sub- radiant modes.Comment: replaced with a new version, an error in one of the equations is correcte

Usos y conflictos de escrituras en quichua santiagueño : Una mirada antropológica

Get PDF

Exciton polaritons in two-dimensional photonic crystals

Experimental evidence of strong coupling between excitons confined in a quantum well and the photonic modes of a two-dimensional dielectric lattice is reported. Both resonant scattering and photoluminescence spectra at low temperature show the anticrossing of the polariton branches, fingerprint of strong coupling regime. The experiments are successfully interpreted in terms of a quantum theory of exciton-photon coupling in the investigated structure. These results show that the polariton dispersion can be tailored by properly varying the photonic crystal lattice parameter, which opens the possibility to obtain the generation of entangled photon pairs through polariton stimulated scattering.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
