Short-Term Forest Management Effects on a Long-Lived Ectotherm
Timber harvesting has been shown to have both positive and negative effects on forest dwelling species. We examined the immediate effects of timber harvests (clearcuts and group selection openings) on ectotherm behavior, using the eastern box turtle as a model. We monitored the movement and thermal ecology of 50 adult box turtles using radiotelemetry from May–October for two years prior to, and two years following scheduled timber harvests in the Central Hardwoods Region of the U.S. Annual home ranges (7.45 ha, 100% MCP) did not differ in any year or in response to timber harvests, but were 33% larger than previous estimates (range 0.47–187.67 ha). Distance of daily movements decreased post-harvest (from 22 m±1.2 m to 15 m±0.9 m) whereas thermal optima increased (from 23±1°C to 25±1°C). Microclimatic conditions varied by habitat type, but monthly average temperatures were warmer in harvested areas by as much as 13°C. Animals that used harvest openings were exposed to extreme monthly average temperatures (~40°C). As a result, the animals made shorter and more frequent movements in and out of the harvest areas while maintaining 9% higher body temperatures. This experimental design coupled with radiotelemetry and behavioral observation of a wild ectotherm population prior to and in response to anthropogenic habitat alteration is the first of its kind. Our results indicate that even in a relatively contiguous forested landscape with small-scale timber harvests, there are local effects on the thermal ecology of ectotherms. Ultimately, the results of this research can benefit the conservation and management of temperature-dependent species by informing effects of timber management across landscapes amid changing climates
A stratigraphical basis for the Anthropocene?
Recognition of intimate feedback mechanisms linking changes across the atmosphere, biosphere, geosphere and hydrosphere demonstrates the pervasive nature of humankind's influence, perhaps to the point that we have fashioned a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene. To what extent will these changes be evident as long-lasting signatures in the geological record?
To establish the Anthropocene as a formal chronostratigraphical unit it is necessary to consider a spectrum of indicators of anthropogenically induced environmental change, and to determine how these show as stratigraphic signals that can be used to characterize an Anthropocene unit and to recognize its base. It is important to consider these signals against a context of Holocene and earlier stratigraphic patterns. Here we review the parameters used by stratigraphers to identify chronostratigraphical units and how these could apply to the definition of the Anthropocene. The onset of the range of signatures is diachronous, although many show maximum signatures which post-date1945, leading to the suggestion that this date may be a suitable age for the start of the Anthropocene
The Rest-Frame Optical Spectrum of MS 1512-cB58
Moderate resolution, near-IR spectroscopy of MS1512-cB58 is presented,
obtained during commissioning of the the Near IR Spectrometer (NIRSPEC) on the
Keck II telescope. The strong lensing of this z=2.72 galaxy by the foreground
cluster MS1512+36 makes it the best candidate for detailed study of the
rest-frame optical properties of Lyman Break Galaxies.
A redshift of z=2.7290+/-0.0007 is inferred from the emission lines, in
contrast to the z=2.7233 calculated from UV observations of interstellar
absorption lines. Using the Balmer line ratios, we find an extinction of
E(B-V)=0.27. Using the line strengths, we infer an SFR=620+/-18 Msun/yr
(H_0=75, q_0=0.1, Lambda =0), a factor of 2 higher than that measured from
narrow-band imaging observations of the galaxy, but a factor of almost 4 lower
than the SFR inferred from the UV continuum luminosity. The width of the Balmer
lines yields a mass of M_vir=1.2x10^10 Msun. We find that the oxygen abundance
is 1/3 solar, in good agreement with other estimates of the metallicity.
However, we infer a high nitrogen abundance, which may argue for the presence

Near-Infrared Studies of V1280 Sco (Nova Scorpii 2007)
We present spectroscopic and photometric results of Nova V1280 Sco which was
discovered in outburst in early 2007 February. The large number of spectra
obtained of the object leads to one of the most extensive, near-infrared
spectral studies of a classical nova. The spectra evolve from a P-Cygni phase
to an emission-line phase and at a later stage is dominated by emission from
the dust that formed in this nova. A detailed model is computed to identify and
study characteristics of the spectral lines. Inferences from the model address
the vexing question of which novae have the ability to form dust. It is
demonstrated, and strikingly corroborated with observations, that the presence
of lines in the early spectra of low-ionization species like Na and Mg -
indicative of low temperature conditions - appear to be reliable indicators
that dust will form in the ejecta. It is theoretically expected that mass loss
during a nova outburst is a sustained process. Spectroscopic evidence for such
a sustained mass loss, obtained by tracing the evolution of a P-Cygni feature
in the Brackett gamma line, is presented here allowing a lower limit of 25-27
days to be set for the mass-loss duration. Photometric data recording the
nova's extended 12 day climb to peak brightness after discovery is used to
establish an early fireball expansion and also show that the ejection began
well before maximum brightness. The JHK light curves indicate the nova had a
fairly strong second outburst around 100 days after the first.Comment: Accepted in MNRAS. The paper contains 8 figures and 4 tables. Few

Different Responses to Reward Comparisons by Three Primate Species
Background: Recently, much attention has been paid to the role of cooperative breeding in the evolution of behavior. In many measures, cooperative breeders are more prosocial than non-cooperatively breeding species, including being more likely to actively share food. This is hypothesized to be due to selective pressures specific to the interdependency characteristic of cooperatively breeding species. Given the high costs of finding a new mate, it has been proposed that cooperative breeders, unlike primates that cooperate in other contexts, should not respond negatively to unequal outcomes between themselves and their partner. However, in this context such pressures may extend beyond cooperative breeders to other species with pair-bonding and bi-parental care.
Methods: Here we test the response of two New World primate species with different parental strategies to unequal outcomes in both individual and social contrast conditions. One species tested was a cooperative breeder (Callithrix spp.) and the second practiced bi-parental care (Aotus spp.). Additionally, to verify our procedure, we tested a third confamilial species that shows no such interdependence but does respond to individual (but not social) contrast (Saimiri spp.). We tested all three genera using an established inequity paradigm in which individuals in a pair took turns to gain rewards that sometimes differed from those of their partners.
Conclusions: None of the three species tested responded negatively to inequitable outcomes in this experimental context. Importantly, the Saimiri spp responded to individual contrast, as in earlier studies, validating our procedure. When these data are considered in relation to previous studies investigating responses to inequity in primates, they indicate that one aspect of cooperative breeding, pair-bonding or bi-parental care, may influence the evolution of these behaviors. These results emphasize the need to study a variety of species to gain insight in to how decision-making may vary across social structures
Modeling of the Super-Eddington Phase for Classical Novae: Five IUE Novae
We present a light curve model for the super-Eddington luminosity phase of
five classical novae observed with IUE. Optical and UV light curves are
calculated based on the optically thick wind theory with a reduced effective
opacity for a porous atmosphere. Fitting a model light curve with the UV 1455
\AA light curve, we determine the white dwarf mass and distance to be (1.3
M_sun, 4.4 kpc) for V693 CrA, (1.05 M_sun, 1.8 kpc) for V1974 Cyg, (0.95 M_sun,
4.1 kpc) for V1668 Cyg, (1.0 M_sun, 2.1 kpc) for V351 Pup, and (1.0 M_sun, 4.3

Nucleosynthesis in ONeMg Novae: Models versus Observations to Constrain the Masses of ONeMg White Dwarfs and Their Envelopes
Nucleosynthesis in ONeMg novae has been investigated with the wide ranges of
three parameters, i.e., the white dwarf mass, the envelope mass at ignition,
and the initial composition. A quasi-analytic one-zone approach is used with an
up-to-date nuclear reaction network. The nucleosynthesis results show
correlation with the peak temperatures or the cooling timescales during
outbursts. Among the combinations of white dwarf and envelope masses which give
the same peak temperature, the explosion is more violent for a lower white
dwarf mass owing to its smaller gravitational potential. Comparison of the
nucleosynthesis results with observations implies that at least two-third of
the white dwarf masses for the observed ONeMg novae are ,
which are significantly lower than estimated by previous hydrodynamic studies
but consistent with the observations of V1974 Cyg. Moreover, the envelope
masses derived from the comparison are , which are in
good agreement with the ejecta masses estimated from observations but
significantly higher than in previous hydrodynamic studies. With such a low
mass white dwarf and a high mass envelope, the nova can produce interesting
amounts of -ray emitters Be, Na, and Al. We suggest
that V1974 Cyg has produced Na as high as the upper limit derived from
the COMPTEL survey. In addition, a non-negligible part of the Galactic
Al may originate from ONeMg novae, if not the major contributors. Both
the future INTEGRAL survey for these -ray emitters and abundance
estimates derived from ultraviolet, optical, and near infrared spectroscopies
