Geometrical Properties of Two-Dimensional Interacting Self-Avoiding Walks at the Theta-Point
We perform a Monte Carlo simulation of two-dimensional N-step interacting
self-avoiding walks at the theta point, with lengths up to N=3200. We compute
the critical exponents, verifying the Coulomb-gas predictions, the theta-point
temperature T_theta = 1.4986(11), and several invariant size ratios. Then, we
focus on the geometrical features of the walks, computing the instantaneous
shape ratios, the average asphericity, and the end-to-end distribution
function. For the latter quantity, we verify in detail the theoretical
predictions for its small- and large-distance behavior.Comment: 23 pages, 4 figure
Narratives to enhance smoking cessation interventions among African-American smokers, the ACCE project
BACKGROUND: Low-income, African-American smokers are less likely to have resources to aid in quitting smoking. Narrative communication may provide an enhancement to traditional smoking cessation interventions like NRT, medications, or behavioral treatments for this audience. After extensive pilot testing of stories and personal experiences with smoking cessation from African-Americans from a low-income community, we conducted a randomized control trial using stories to augment routine inpatient treatment among African-Americans at an urban Southern hospital (N = 300).
RESULTS: Differences in smoking cessation outcomes between the intervention (stories DVD + routine clinical treatment) and control (routine clinical treatment) arms were compared using self-report and carbon monoxide measurement at 6-months. Compared to control, individuals who viewed the intervention stories DVD reported greater intentions to quit. Although continuous quitting marginally favored the intervention, our main result did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.16).
CONCLUSION: Narrative communication via storytelling to promote smoking cessation among African-Americans in the South is one method to communicate smoking cessation. Results suggest this may not be sufficient as a stand-alone augmentation of routine clinical treatment for continuous smoking cessation. Smoking cessation efforts need to continually assess different means of communicating to smokers about quitting.

Exercise-induced endocannabinoid signaling is modulated by intensity
Abstract Endocannabinoids (eCB) are endogenous ligands for cannabinoid receptors that are densely expressed in brain networks responsible for reward. Recent work shows that exercise activates the eCB system in humans and other mammals, suggesting eCBs are partly responsible for the reported improvements in mood and affect following aerobic exercise in humans. However, exercise-induced psychological changes reported by runners are known to be dependent on exercise intensity, suggesting that any underlying molecular mechanism should also change with varying levels of exercise intensity. Here, we examine circulating levels of eCBs following aerobic exercise (treadmill running) in recreationally fit human runners at four different intensities. We show that eCB signaling is indeed intensity dependent, with significant changes in circulating eCBs observed following moderate intensities only (very high and very low intensity exercises do not significantly alter circulating eCB levels). Our results are consistent with intensity-dependent psychological state changes with exercise and therefore support the hypothesis that eCB activity is related to neurobiological effects of exercise. Thus, future studies examining the role of exercise-induced eCB signaling on neurobiology or physiology must take exercise intensity into account
High availability using virtualization - 3RC
High availability has always been one of the main problems for a data center.
Till now high availability was achieved by host per host redundancy, a highly
expensive method in terms of hardware and human costs. A new approach to the
problem can be offered by virtualization. Using virtualization, it is possible
to achieve a redundancy system for all the services running on a data center.
This new approach to high availability allows the running virtual machines to
be distributed over a small number of servers, by exploiting the features of
the virtualization layer: start, stop and move virtual machines between
physical hosts. The 3RC system is based on a finite state machine, providing
the possibility to restart each virtual machine over any physical host, or
reinstall it from scratch. A complete infrastructure has been developed to
install operating system and middleware in a few minutes. To virtualize the
main servers of a data center, a new procedure has been developed to migrate
physical to virtual hosts. The whole Grid data center SNS-PISA is running at
the moment in virtual environment under the high availability system.Comment: 10 page
Electrospun amplified fiber optics
A lot of research is focused on all-optical signal processing, aiming to
obtain effective alternatives to existing data transmission platforms.
Amplification of light in fiber optics, such as in Erbium-doped fiber
amplifiers, is especially important for an efficient signal transmission.
However, the complex fabrication methods, involving high-temperature processes
performed in highly pure environment, slow down the fabrication and make
amplified components expensive with respect to an ideal, high-throughput and
room temperature production. Here, we report on near infrared polymer fiber
amplifiers, working over a band of about 20 nm. The fibers are cheap, spun with
a process entirely carried out at room temperature, and show amplified
spontaneous emission with good gain coefficients as well as low optical losses
(a few cm^-1). The amplification process is favoured by the high fiber quality
and low self-absorption. The found performance metrics promise to be suitable
for short-distance operation, and the large variety of commercially-available
doping dyes might allow for effective multi-wavelength operation by electrospun
amplified fiber optics.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figure
Addressing Cervical Cancer Disparities in Texas: Expansion of a Community-Based Prevention initiative For Medically Underserved Populations
Although cervical cancer is preventable, significant disparities exist in access to screening and prevention services. In medically underserved areas (MUAs) of Texas, these rates are 55% higher compared to the remainder of the US. In 2019, we expanded a multicomponent, comprehensive program to improve cervical cancer prevention in partnership with 13 clinics and mobile vans in MUAs of Texas. Our multicomponent intervention program consists of community education and patient navigation coupled with a training/mentoring program for local medical providers to perform diagnostic procedures and treatment for patients with abnormal screening results. Hands-on training courses to learn these skills are coupled with biweekly telementoring conferences using Project ECHO® (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes). This program was implemented in 2015 and expanded to other MUAs in Texas in 2019. From March 2019 to August 2022, 75,842 individuals were educated about cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination. A total of 44,781 women underwent screening for cervical cancer, and 2,216 underwent colposcopy and 264 underwent LEEP. High-grade cervical dysplasia was diagnosed in 658 individuals and invasive cervical cancer in 33 individuals. We trained 22 providers to perform colposcopy and/or LEEP. In addition, 78 Project ECHO telementoring sessions were held with an average of 42 attendees per session, with 72 individual patient cases discussed. Our comprehensive community-based prevention initiative for medically underserved populations has led to a significant number of individuals undergoing cervical cancer screening in MUAs, as well as improved access to colposcopy and LEEP services
Search for CP Violation in the Decay Z -> b (b bar) g
About three million hadronic decays of the Z collected by ALEPH in the years
1991-1994 are used to search for anomalous CP violation beyond the Standard
Model in the decay Z -> b \bar{b} g. The study is performed by analyzing
angular correlations between the two quarks and the gluon in three-jet events
and by measuring the differential two-jet rate. No signal of CP violation is
found. For the combinations of anomalous CP violating couplings, and , limits of \hat{h}_b < 0.59h^{\ast}_{b} < 3.02$ are given at 95\% CL.Comment: 8 pages, 1 postscript figure, uses here.sty, epsfig.st
