Chiral spin-orbital liquids with nodal lines
Strongly correlated materials with strong spin-orbit coupling hold promise
for realizing topological phases with fractionalized excitations. Here we
propose a chiral spin-orbital liquid as a stable phase of a realistic model for
heavy-element double perovskites. This spin liquid state has Majorana fermion
excitations with a gapless spectrum characterized by nodal lines along the
edges of the Brillouin zone. We show that the nodal lines are topological
defects of a non-Abelian Berry connection and that the system exhibits
dispersing surface states. We discuss some experimental signatures of this
state and compare them with properties of the spin liquid candidate Ba_2YMoO_6.Comment: 5 pages + supplementary materia
Torsion and Gravitation: A new view
According to the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity, curvature and
torsion are two equivalent ways of describing the same gravitational field.
Despite equivalent, however, they act differently: whereas curvature yields a
geometric description, in which the concept of gravitational force is absent,
torsion acts as a true gravitational force, quite similar to the Lorentz force
of electrodynamics. As a consequence, the right-hand side of a
spinless-particle equation of motion (which would represent a gravitational
force) is always zero in the geometric description, but not in the teleparallel
case. This means essentially that the gravitational coupling prescription can
be minimal only in the geometric case. Relying on this property, a new
gravitational coupling prescription in the presence of curvature and torsion is
proposed. It is constructed in such a way to preserve the equivalence between
curvature and torsion, and its basic property is to be equivalent with the
usual coupling prescription of general relativity. According to this view, no
new physics is connected with torsion, which appears as a mere alternative to
curvature in the description of gravitation. An application of this formulation
to the equations of motion of both a spinless and a spinning particle is madeComment: To appear on IJMP
Strategic Planning: a model based on Systems Engineering
This work has the main motivation to propose an approach based on Systems Engineering to expand the scope of Organizational Strategic Planning. The proposed method was idealized considering the approaches of Chiavenato & Sapiro (2003) and Loureiro (1999). It is considered that the proposed method was more adequate than the traditional models previously applied
Ab-initio molecular dynamics simulation of hydrogen diffusion in -iron
First-principles atomistic molecular dynamics simulation in the
micro-canonical and canonical ensembles has been used to study the diffusion of
interstitial hydrogen in -iron. Hydrogen to Iron ratios between
2 \times 2 \times 2$ supercell. We find that
the average optimum absorption site and the barrier for diffusion depend on the
concentration of interestitials. Iron Debye temperature decreases monotonically
for increasing concentration of interstitial hydrogen, proving that iron-iron
interatomic potential is significantly weakened in the presence of a large
number of diffusing hydrogen atoms
Rain, power laws, and advection
Localized rain events have been found to follow power-law size and duration
distributions over several decades, suggesting parallels between precipitation
and seismic activity [O. Peters et al., PRL 88, 018701 (2002)]. Similar power
laws are generated by treating rain as a passive tracer undergoing advection in
a velocity field generated by a two-dimensional system of point vortices.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
