On the charged particle drag acting on LAGEOS
A recent study by the authors points to Charged Particle Drag (CPD) as a contributor to revisit in the LAGEOS non-gravitational perturbations problem. Such perturbations must account for dynamical contributions in the order of pms−2 . The simulated effect takes into account: (i) spatial and temporal variations of the plasmatic parameters
(temperature and concentration of the species), (ii) spacecraft potential variations caused by both the eclipse passages and variations in the parameters mentioned above, and (iii) solar and geomagnetic conditions. Furthermore, recent theoretical improvements concerning scattering drag overcome previous limitations allowing for a complete
formulation of this effect. For each satellite the lifetime CPD instantaneous acceleration is computed. The plasmatic parameters have been obtained fromthe Sheffield Coupled Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Plasmasphere (SCTIP) semi-empirical
model (up to the polar region), as well as alytical/empirical approximations based on spacecraft measurements for the auroral and polar regions. Results show that maximum amplitudes for LAGEOSI are larger than those for LAGEOS-II: −85 pms−2 and −70 pms−2 respectively. This is due to the almost (magnetically) polar orbit configuration of the first, producing larger combinations of plasmatic parameter values. High solar activity has a huge impact in the resulting LAGEOS accelerations: it yields a perfect modulation of the resulting
acceleration with maximum amplitudes up to a factor of 10 when comparing low and high activity periods. On the other hand, the impact of the geomagnetic activity results into a reduction of the effect itself, probably due to a decrease in the hydrogen concentration for high energy input periods. Vertical biogeographical overview of the Zooplankton community across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian ocean (35ºN-40ºS)
From December 2010 to June 2011 the mesozooplankton has been sampled at the deep Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Ocean (*). From surface to 3000 m depth a HYDROBIOSS multinet was used distinguishing the epipelagic (77%), mesopelagic (11%) and bathypelagic zones (11%), where five layers were usually sampled (0-200, 200-500, 500-1000, 1000-2000 and 2000-3000 m depth). Among the three oceans, no large differences on abundance were found when taxonomic groups were considered, being always depth the most important factor affecting the vertical zooplankton distribution. The zooplankton abundance strongly decreased with depth and very low abundance was found at deeper waters. Very irregular spatial distribution was observed all across the three oceans, finding the lowest abundance in the south and western Pacific region. Copepods were always the most abundant contributors of the zooplankton community (84%) and more than 260 species identified. They were followed by chaetognaths (5%), siphonophores (3%), ostracods (2%) and euphausiids (1%). In a biogeographical overview, the vertical distribution of the most abundant copepods is analyzed, finding the largest copepods at deeper stratum, where small cosmopolitan copepods were also found
Modelo de la estructura de basamento e identificación de fuentes sismogenéticas en la Depresión del Bajo Segura (Murcia-Alicante)
In this work we have carried out a geophysical and seismotectonic study in order to identify and characterise the seismogenetic sources or Bajo Segura actives faults. The main method used is the structural interpretation of gravity data. This method is combined with geological-structural and geomorphological studies, as well as historical and instrumental seismicity data. Several of the strongest earthquakes recorded in the Spanish historical catalogue occurred in this region, among them, the Torrevieja earthquake of 1829. Often, this activity is related to blind faults in the basin interior, that are covered by neogene and plioquaternary deposits. Different faults systems related to the neotectonic stress field and coherent with border structures, may explain this activity
Preventive treatments for breast cancer: recent developments
Breast cancer is a burden for western societies, and an increasing one in emerging economies, because of its high incidence and enormous psychological, social, sanitary and economic costs. However, breast cancer is a preventable disease in a significant proportion. Recent developments in the armamentarium of effective drugs for breast cancer prevention (namely exemestane and anastrozole), the new recommendation from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence to use preventative drugs in women at high risk as well as updated Guidelines from the US Preventive Services Task Force and the American Society of Clinical Oncology should give renewed momentum to the pharmacological prevention of breast cancer. In this article we review recent major developments in the field and examine their ongoing repercussion for breast cancer prevention. As a practical example, the potential impact of preventive measures in Spain is evaluated and a course of practical actions is delineated
On-Surface Driven Formal Michael Addition Produces m-Polyaniline Oligomers on Pt(111)
On-surface synthesis is emerging as a highly rational bottom-up methodology for the synthesis of molecular structures that are unattainable or complex to obtain by wet chemistry. Here, oligomers of meta-polyaniline, a known ferromagnetic polymer, were synthesized from para-aminophenol building-blocks via an unexpected and highly specific on-surface formal 1, 4 Michael-type addition at the meta position, driven by the reduction of the aminophenol molecule. We rationalize this dehydrogenation and coupling reaction mechanism with a combination of in situ scanning tunneling and non-contact atomic force microscopies, high-resolution synchrotron-based X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. This study demonstrates the capability of surfaces to selectively modify local molecular conditions to redirect well-established synthetic routes, such as Michael coupling, towards the rational synthesis of new covalent nanostructures
Muon Track Reconstruction and Data Selection Techniques in AMANDA
The Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA) is a high-energy
neutrino telescope operating at the geographic South Pole. It is a lattice of
photo-multiplier tubes buried deep in the polar ice between 1500m and 2000m.
The primary goal of this detector is to discover astrophysical sources of high
energy neutrinos. A high-energy muon neutrino coming through the earth from the
Northern Hemisphere can be identified by the secondary muon moving upward
through the detector. The muon tracks are reconstructed with a maximum
likelihood method. It models the arrival times and amplitudes of Cherenkov
photons registered by the photo-multipliers. This paper describes the different
methods of reconstruction, which have been successfully implemented within
AMANDA. Strategies for optimizing the reconstruction performance and rejecting
background are presented. For a typical analysis procedure the direction of

PPARGC1A gene promoter methylation as a biomarker of insulin secretion and sensitivity in response to glucose challenges
Methylation in CpG sites of the PPARGC1A gene (encoding PGC1-α) has been associated
with adiposity, insulin secretion/sensitivity indexes and type 2 diabetes. We assessed the association
between the methylation profile of the PPARGC1A gene promoter gene in leukocytes with insulin
secretion/sensitivity indexes in normoglycemic women. A standard oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)
and an abbreviated version of the intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) were carried out in
n = 57 Chilean nondiabetic women with measurements of plasma glucose, insulin, and C-peptide.
Bisulfite-treated DNA from leukocytes was evaluated for methylation levels in six CpG sites of the
proximal promoter of the PPARGC1A gene by pyrosequencing (positions -816, -783, -652, -617, -521
and -515). A strong correlation between the DNA methylation percentage of different CpG sites of the
PPARGC1A promoter in leukocytes was found, suggesting an integrated epigenetic control of this
region. We found a positive association between the methylation levels of the CpG site -783 with the
insulin sensitivity Matsuda composite index (rho = 0.31; p = 0.02) derived from the OGTT. The CpG
hypomethylation in the promoter position -783 of the PPARGC1A gene in leukocytes may represent a
biomarker of reduced insulin sensitivity after the ingestion of glucose
Mental impact of Covid-19 among Spanish healthcare workers. A large longitudinal survey

We estimated prevalence, incidence and persistence of probable mental disorders in a cohort of Spanish healthcare workers (Covid-19 waves 1 and 2) -and identified associated risk factors. Methods 8996 healthcare workers evaluated on 5 May-7 September 2020 (baseline) were invited to a second web-based survey (October-December 2020). Major depressive disorder (PHQ-8 ≥ 10), generalised anxiety disorder (GAD-7 ≥ 10), panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder (PCL-5 ≥ 7), and alcohol use disorder (CAGE-AID ≥ 2) were assessed. Distal (pre-pandemic) and proximal (pandemic) risk factors were included. We estimated the incidence of probable mental disorders (among those without disorders at baseline) and persistence (among those with disorders at baseline). Logistic regression of individual-level [odds ratios (OR)] and population-level (population attributable risk proportions) associations were estimated, adjusting by all distal risk factors, health care centre and time of baseline interview. Results 4809 healthcare workers participated at four months follow-up (cooperation rate = 65.7%; mean = 120 days s.d. = 22 days from baseline assessment). Follow-up prevalence of any disorder was 41.5%, (v. 45.4% at baseline, p < 0.001); incidence, 19.7% (s.e. = 1.6) and persistence, 67.7% (s.e. = 2.3). Proximal factors showing significant bivariate-adjusted associations with incidence included: work-related factors [prioritising Covid-19 patients (OR = 1.62)], stress factors [personal health-related stress (OR = 1.61)], interpersonal stress (OR = 1.53) and financial factors [significant income loss (OR = 1.37)]. Risk factors associated with persistence were largely similar. Conclusions Our study indicates that the prevalence of probable mental disorders among Spanish healthcare workers during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic was similarly high to that after the first wave. This was in good part due to the persistence of mental disorders detected at the baseline, but with a relevant incidence of about 1 in 5 of HCWs without mental disorders during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Health-related factors, work-related factors and interpersonal stress are important risks of persistence of mental disorders and of incidence of mental disorders. Adequately addressing these factors might have prevented a considerable amount of mental health impact of the pandemic among this vulnerable population. Addressing health-related stress, work-related factors and interpersonal stress might reduce the prevalence of these disorders substantially. Study registration number: NCT0455656
An Assessment of the Systematic Uncertainty in Present and Future Tests of the Lense-Thirring Effect with Satellite Laser Ranging
We deal with the attempts to measure the Lense-Thirring effect with the
Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) technique applied to the existing LAGEOS and
LAGEOS II terrestrial satellites and to the recently approved LARES
spacecraft.The first issue addressed here is: are the so far published
evaluations of the systematic uncertainty induced by the bad knowledge of the
even zonal harmonic coefficients J_L of the multipolar expansion of the Earth's
geopotential reliable and realistic?
Our answer is negative. Indeed, if the differences Delta J_L among the even
zonals estimated in different Earth's gravity field global solutions from the
dedicated GRACE mission are assumed for the uncertainties delta J_L instead of
using their covariance sigmas sigma_JL, it turns out that the systematic
uncertainty \delta\mu in the Lense-Thirring test with the nodes Omega of LAGEOS
and LAGEOS II may be up to 3 to 4 times larger than in the evaluations so far
published () based on the use of the sigmas of one model at a time
separately. The second issue consists of the possibility of using a different
approach in extracting the relativistic signature of interest from the
LAGEOS-type data. The third issue is the possibility of reaching a realistic
total accuracy of 1% with LAGEOS, LAGEOS II and LARES, which should be launched
in November 2009 with a VEGA rocket. While LAGEOS and LAGEOS II fly at
altitudes of about 6000 km, LARES will be likely placed at an altitude of 1450
km. Thus, it will be sensitive to much more even zonals than LAGEOS and LAGEOS
II. Their corrupting impact has been evaluated with the standard Kaula's
approach up to degree L=60 by using Delta J_L and sigma_JL; it turns out that
