A Simple Test of Momentum in Foreign Exchange Markets

This study proposes a new method for testing for the presence of momentum in nominal exchange rates, using a probabilistic approach. We illustrate our methodology estimating a binary response model using information on local currency / US dollar exchange rates of eight emerging economies. After controlling for important variables affecting the behavior of exchange rates in the short-run, we show evidence of exchange rate inertia; in other words, we find that exchange rate momentum is a common feature in this group of emerging economies, and thus foreign exchange traders participating in these markets are able to make excess returns by following technical analysis strategies. We find that the presence of momentum is asymmetric, being stronger in moments of currency depreciation than of appreciation. The Competing Risks of Acquiring and Being Acquired: Evidence from Colombia´s Financial Sector

This paper studies the determinants of the probability of participating in a process of merging or acquisition for financial institutions in Colombia. We use survival analysis techniques and competing risks models to estimate the probability of participating in such processes as an acquiring or acquired firm. Using an especially rich database containing financial information of Colombian banks for the period 1990 - 2007, we find that both macroeconomic and microeconomic variables are important determinants of such probability. However, there are differential effects for the acquiring firm and the acquired firm. Particularly, while firm size and solvency result significant determinants of the probability of being an acquiring firm, efficiency is an important determinant of the probability of being acquired. Also, the concentration index, that plays no role for acquiring firms, plays an important role in the probability of being acquired.Survival analysis; competing risk models; Colombia

The Cyclical Behavior of Bank Capital Buffers in an Emerging Economy: Size Does Matter

Using a panel of Colombian banks and quarterly data between 1996:1 and 2010:3, we study the relationship between short-run adjustments in bank capital buffers and the business cycle. We follow a partial adjustment framework and control for several variables that have been identified as important determinants of bank capital buffers in previous studies, and find that bank capital buffers vary over the business cycle. We are able to identify a negative co-movement of capital buffers and the business cycle. However, we also find that capital buffers of small and large banks behave asymmetrically during the business cycle. While the former appear to be constant over time, once the appropriate set of control variables is used, the latter present a countercyclical behavior. Our results suggest the possible need of the implementation of regulatory policy measures in developing countries.Bank capital buffers, Credit risk, Regulation, Colombia. Histone Mutants Separate R Loop Formation from Genome Instability Induction

R loops have positive physiological roles, but they can also be deleterious by causing genome instability, and the mechanisms for this are unknown. Here we identified yeast histone H3 and H4 mutations that facilitate R loops but do not cause instability. R loops containing single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), versus RNA-DNA hybrids alone, were demonstrated using ssDNA-specific human AID and bisulfite. Notably, they are similar size regardless of whether or not they induce genome instability. Contrary to mutants causing R loop-mediated instability, these histone mutants do not accumulate H3 serine-10 phosphate (H3S10-P). We propose a two-step mechanism in which, first, an altered chromatin facilitates R loops, and second, chromatin is modified, including H3S10-P, as a requisite for compromising genome integrity. Consistently, these histone mutations suppress the high H3S10 phosphorylation and genomic instability of hpr1 and sen1 mutants. Influencia del nivel educativo de los progenitores y la edad en la derivación de equivalencia-equivalencia

Antecedentes: el objetivo de este trabajo fue el estudio del razonamiento analógico desde el fenómeno de equivalencia-equivalencia. Método: las variables estudiadas fueron la edad de los participantes y el nivel educativo de los padres, en relación a la ejecución de la tarea de razonamiento. Para ello se utilizó una muestra de 64 participantes. Se diseñó un instrumento basado en discriminaciones condicionales utilizando el procedimiento de igualación simbólica a la muestra. Resultados: los resultados mostraron una diferencia significativa en la ejecución de la tarea entre los niños con padres universitarios y los niños con padres no universitarios. Sin embargo, en relación a la edad no se obtuvieron resultados concluyentes. Conclusiones: se analizan estos resultados desde la perspectiva de la derivación de la relación de equivalencia-equivalencia a través de entrenamiento en múltiples ejemplares como origen de la derivación del fenómeno.Background: The objective of this work was the study of analogical reasoning from the perspective of the equivalence-equivalence phenomenon. Method: The variables studied consisted of the age of the participants and the educational level of the parents, in relation to performance on a reasoning task. The task utilized a sample size of 64 participants and an instrument based on conditional discriminations using the matching-to-sample procedure. Results: The results showed a significant difference in the performance on the task between the children of parents with college degrees, and those of parents without college degrees. However, there were no conclusive results as to age. Conclusions: The results are analyzed from the perspective of the derivation of the relationship of equivalence-equivalence via multiple exemplar training

La inadecuada valoración de la conducto de la victima en los delitos culposos dentro del nuevo sistema acusatorio penal, en el estado de mexico.

En este tiempo de reformas a nuestro sistema penal, se expone la parte general del derecho penal, en el estudio de la teoría del tipo objetivo a través de la teoría de la imputación objetiva implementándola a nuestro nuevo sistema Acusatorio, Adversarial y Oral en el Estado de México; En ese sentido, cabe destacar que está investigación se establece en busca de un garantismo real en la praxis del derecho penal, principalmente en la etapa preliminar, desde el momento mismo que la autoridad tome conocimiento de un hecho culposo sea valorada la participación de las personas en la producción del resultado, para así determinar a quién de ellas es atribuible la causación del mismo, obteniendo un responsable de manera objetiva. Al tener esta premisa garantista, el nuevo sistema penal en el Estado de México, dota de derechos a imputado y víctima, garantizando la protección de derechos fundamentales, en consecuencia, se debe establecer la imputación objetiva del resultado desde la obtención de datos de prueba, analizando objetivamente, no solo la participación del imputado, sino también la desplegada por la víctima en la causación del resultado culposo

Propuesta de indicadores financieros para las Pymes del sector de desarrollo de software en la ciudad de Pereira

En esta investigación se expone la situación de las PYMES de la ciudad de Pereira, que se encargan del desarrollo de software. La primera fase del proyecto tiene como propósito conocer la realidad en cuanto al manejo financiero que se da en este tipo de empresa y se determinará gracias a pequeñas entrevistas que se harán como primer acercamiento al sector. En la segunda fase se desarrolló un diagnostico a través de la aplicación de encuestas en una muestra tomada por conveniencia de PYMES del sector, que permitió la comparación entre ellas en cuanto a su percepción sobre la evolución que ha tenido la industria del software en la región, aspectos relacionados directamente al manejo del área financiera, su forma de calcular la rentabilidad de la empresa o de un proyecto, formas de financiación, manejo de las finanzas (presupuestos, proyecciones, etc.) y conocimiento y manejo de indicadores financieros. Finalmente, los resultados de las encuestas se analizaron en función de los indicadores financieros que tienen una aplicación más significativa en este tipo de organizaciones. Se procedió a establecer una propuesta de estos indicadores, la cual producirá una transformación que se verá ilustrada en los informes finales de la gestión financiera de las PYMES, llevándolas a mejorar su proceso de documentación, desarrollo y análisis de los estados financieros y de ésta manera mejorar el proceso de toma de decisiones.This research shows the status of some of the SMEs in the city of Pereira, who are responsible for software development. The first phase of the project aims to know the reality in terms of financial management that occurs in this type of business and will be determined through small interviews as a first approach to the sector. In the second phase it will be a diagnosis through the use of surveys in a sample taken for convenience of SMEs in the sector, which will allow comparison between them in terms of their perception of the evolution that has taken the software industry in the region , issues directly related to the management of the financial area, the way to calculate the profitability of the company or project, forms of financing, financial management (budgeting, forecasting, etc..) and knowledge and use of financial indicators. Finally, the results of the surveys will be analyzed in terms of the financial indicators that have a significant application in this type of organizations. Then, they will be establish a proposal for these indicators which will produce a transformation that will be shown in the final reports of the financial management of SMEs, allowing them to improve their process documentation, development and analysis of financial statements to have better decisions

Diseño de un prototipo de vehículo volador

The concept of designing a hybrid car between an aircraft and a ground vehicle is based on finding an effective solution to traffic congestion in major cities around the world, as this generates great controversy in mobility and developing them. This prototype should be able to fly in a short distance range without the need for a runway to take off or land , ie , vertical takeoff and landing . Also, you must be a car for personal transport whose circulation is permitted in the city like any other vehicle. The project is under the supervision of Pedro Meneses , Director of the thesis , together with Creatti Labs SA (Bogota - Colombia ) . Design parameters, which were intended to solve problems of traffic congestion and project ourselves as a society to a near future in which there would be these vehicles were developed.El concepto de diseñar un automóvil hibrido entre una aeronave y un vehículo terrestre se basa en la búsqueda de una solución eficaz para la congestión vehicular en las principales ciudades del mundo, ya que esto genera gran conflicto en la movilidad y desarrollo de las mismas. Este prototipo debe ser capaz de volar en un rango corto de distancia sin la necesidad de una pista para despegar o aterrizar, es decir, despegue y aterrizaje vertical. Además, debe ser un automóvil para transporte personal cuya circulación sea permitida en la ciudad como cualquier otro vehículo.
