    Impact on the Quality of Life of Older Adults Who Use Inadequate Dental Prostheses: A Cross-Sectional Study

    Objective: To investigate the impact of inadequate prostheses on older adult’s quality of life at the Integrated Health Center for Older Adults in the northeastern city of Brazil. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 147 older adults aged 60-90 years old in João Pessoa, Brazil. Interviews and oral examinations were carried out to collect demographic characteristics (age and gender) and clinical dental measures (use of inadequate upper and/or lower dental prosthesis) and Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14 Questionnaire). The Pearson Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests were used to evaluate the association between the OHIP-14 dimensions and the use of unsatisfactory prostheses (p<0.05). Results: The sample consisted of 90.5% of women being a mean age of 69.86 (± 6.60) years. Individuals with inadequate prostheses had a higher impact on quality of life, with a predominant prevalence ratio for developing physical pain (PRR = 3.52; CI = 4.69-2.65), psychological discomfort (PRR = 5.0; CI = 5.85- 4.26) and psychological inability (PRR = 1.71; CI = 2.56-1.14). Conclusion: The use of inadequate prostheses had a negative impact on the quality of life of the older adult population. Therefore, services, which provide health care for older adults, should overcome this reality by providing broad access to oral rehabilitation that is appropriate to the needs of each individual

    The Effects of Short Term Intracanal Medicaments on the Fracture Resistance of Root in Pulp Revitalization Procedure

    Introduction: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of short term intracanal medicaments on the fracture resistance of root in simulated necrotic immature teeth in pulp revitalization procedure. Methods and Materials: Bovine teeth (n=180) were selected, sectioned coronally and apically and then, internally fragilized. Intracanal medicament groups were arranged as follows: “Triple Antibiotic Paste” (TAP) group (n=60), “Calcium Hydroxide” (CH) group (n=60) and the control group (n=60). No medication was used in the control group. Fracture resistance tests were performed after 7, 14, and 21 days. At allocated intervals, 20 teeth from each group had fractured. The Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were performed to verify the effects of the employed medicaments at each time point. Friedman test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test were also performed to verify the association between time and fracture resistance. The level of significance was set at 0.05. Results: After 7 days, there was no statistical difference between groups (P=0.376). Intragroup analysis revealed that, after 21 days, the TAP group (P=0.015) and the CH group (P=0.006) presented a statically significant reduction in fracture resistance comparison with 7 days. Statistical difference was not verified for the control group after 7, 14 and 21 days (P=0.25). There was no statistical difference between CH group and the control group after 7, 14 and 21 days (P>0.05). The reduction was significant for TAP after 14 and 21 days (P=0.018, P=0.033 Respectively). Conclusions: This in vitro study showed that the duration at which TAP and CH remained in the root canal influenced the fracture resistance of bovine teeth with simulated incomplete root formation.Keywords: Calcium Hydroxide; Endodontics; Regeneration; Triple Antibiotic Past

    30-Month randomised clinical trial to evaluate the clinical performance of a nanofill and a nanohybrid composite

    Objective To evaluate the clinical performance of a nanofill and a nanohybrid composite in restorations in occlusal cavities of posterior teeth in a randomised trial over 30 months. Methods Forty-one adolescents participated in the study. The teeth were restored with a nanofill (Filtek Z350, 3M ESPE), a nanohybrid (Esthet-X, Dentsply); Filtek Z250 (3M ESPE) was used as a control. After 30 months, the restorations were evaluated in accordance with the US Public Health Service (USPHS) modified criteria. The McNemar and Friedman tests were used for statistical analysis, at a level of significance of 5%. Results There were significant differences in the roughness of Filtek Z250 (p = 0.008) and Filtek Z350 (p < 0.001) when the four time periods (baseline, 6 months, 12 months and 30 months) were compared. There were significant differences in the marginal adaptation of Filtek Z250 (p = 0.001), Filtek Z350 (p < 0.001) and Esthet-X (p = 0.011). Except for one of each composite restoration, all the modifications ranged from Alpha to Bravo. There were significant differences in the surface roughness (p = 0.005) when the three composites were compared after 30 months. Conclusions The materials investigated showed acceptable clinical performance after 30 months. Long-term re-evaluations are necessary for a more detailed analysis of these composites (CEP: #1252)

    ABSTRACT A complete review of Brazilian scientific articles on orofacial myology (OM) published in the last 10 years was conducted to describe, categorize and quantitatively analyze studies in the field of OM. Data were collected from all Brazilian journals on speech-language and hearing sciences published between 2005 and 2015. All articles were reviewed and categorized according to the year of publication, type of article and subject area. Furthermore, all studies conducted on humans that reported quantitative data were analyzed regarding age group, scope, main objective and type of study. The data were discussed from the standpoint of scientific methodology applied for the improvement of methods and for evidence-based scientific development. Moreover, aspects to be considered in future studies in this field are suggested. Os dados foram coletados em todas as publicações em motricidade orofacial publicadas nos últimos dez anos, após uma análise integral de todos os periódicos brasileiros em Fonoaudiologia. Os artigos foram categorizados quanto ao ano, tipo de artigo e área temática. Além disso, foram analisados sobre a faixa etária, abrangência, essência do objetivo e tipo de estudo todos os artigos realizados com seres humanos e com dados quantitativos. Os dados foram discutidos sob a ótica da metodologia científica aplicada ao aperfeiçoamento do método e desenvolvimento da ciência baseado em evidências.     The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dental trauma attendance: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dental trauma patient attendance. The study was registered in the PROSPERO system, using the CRD42021288398 protocol. Searching was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Lilacs, and OpenGrey databases, using the following keywords: “Tooth injuries,” “Dental trauma,” “Traumatic Dental injury,” and “COVID-19". We included observational studies evaluating dental trauma in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Quality assessment was performed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Cross-Sectional Studies. Meta-analysis was performed in RevMan 5.4 software with Odds Ratios as a pooled measure of effect, with a 95% confidence interval, and using random-effects modeling. After applying the eligibility criteria, 32 studies were included for qualitative analysis, in which 10 were used to assess the frequency of dental trauma diagnoses in dental emergencies. Despite the decrease of visits during COVID-19, the analysis revealed no difference between the pandemic and pre-pandemic periods. Regarding the type of dental trauma, two of the studies revealed no differences for the periods before and during the pandemic. This study revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic has not impacted the frequency or type of dental trauma compared to previous periods

    Avaliação da influência da incorporação de substâncias desinfetantes na resistência à compressão e à tração diametral de dois gessos tipo IV

    O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a influência da incorporação de três desinfetantes (hipoclorito de sódio a 1%, glutaraldeído alcalino a 2% e digluconato de clorexidina a 2%) em duas diferentes porcentagens de substituição da água da espatulação (50 e 100%) de dois gessos tipo IV, FujiRock EP (M1) e Rock Plus (M2), avaliando-se a resistência à compressão e à tração diametral. Os corpos-de-prova foram obtidos a partir de matrizes metálicas bipartidas com 20 mm de diâmetro e 40 mm de altura (resistência à compressão) e 20 mm de diâmetro e 10 mm de altura (resistência à tração diametral). As matrizes foram fixadas sobre uma placa de vidro, o gesso foi manipulado na proporção água/pó recomendada pelos fabricantes (M1:20ml/100g e M2:19 ml/100g), em um espatulador mecânico por 30 segundos, e vazado sob vibração. Para cada ensaio foram confeccionados sete grupos para cada gesso (n=10). Os grupos foram: CONTROLE (Água destilada), G50 (substituição de 50% da água de espatulação por glutaraldeído), G100 (100% de glutaraldeído), C50 (substituição de 50% da água por clorexidina), C100 (100% de clorexidina), H50 (substituição de 50% da água por hipoclorito) e H100 (100% de hipoclorito). Após a presa os corpos-de-prova foram removidos das matrizes e armazenados à temperatura ambiente. Os ensaio de compressão e tração diametral foram realizados 24 horas após o vazamento, em uma máquina de ensaios MTS-810, com célula de carga de 100 KN à velocidade de 0,5mm/min. Os valores médios de resistência à compressão e à tração diametral (MPa) foram submetidos à análise de variância e teste de Tukey, com nível de significância de 95%, permitindo concluir que: (a) a incorporação das substâncias desinfetantes estudadas afetou a resistência à compressão de ambos os gessos analisados; (b) as diferentes proporções de incorporação das substâncias...The purpose of this study was to evaluate the compressive and diametral tensile strength of two Type IV dental stones, FujiRock EP (M1) e Rock Plus (M2), mixed with three disinfectant solutions (sodium hypochlorite 1%, chlorhexidine digluconate 2% and glutaraldehyde 2%) in two different proportions of gauging water (50% and 100%). Compressive samples consisted of cylindrical specimens, each having a diameter of 20 mm and length of 40 mm, and diametral tensile specimens consisted of discshaped specimens, having a diameter of 20 mm and length of 10 mm, obtained from split metal molds. The stone was mixed with the solutions previously outlined at the water-powder ratio recommended by the manufacturers (M1:20ml/100g e M2:19 ml/100g), mechanically spatulated under vacuum (Turbomix) for 30 seconds, and gently vibrated in the molds. Seven groups were prepared for each test, with 10 samples each, as follows: CONTROL (distilled water), G50 (substitution of 50% of gauging water by glutaraldehyde), G100 (only glutaraldehyde), C50 (substitution of 50% of gauging water by chlorhexidine digluconate), C100 (only chlorhexidine digluconate), H50 (substitution of 50% of gauging water by sodium hypochlorite) and H100 (only sodium hypochlorite). Specimens were removed from the molds after they set. Compressive strength and diametral tensile strength was determined 24 hours the specimens were cast, in an MTS-810 testing machine, with a cross-head speed of 0,5mm/min. Mean compressive and diametral tensile strength was calculated and expressed in megapascals (MPa). Data from both tests were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey test, showing that: (a) chemical disinfectants incorporation reduced the compressive strength of type IV dental stones evaluated; (b) the use of two different proportions of gauging water substitution by disinfectants (50% and 100%) has affected the compressive strength of only one die stone (M1); (c) chemical disinfectants incorporation did not reduced.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES

    Influência de diferentes resinas acrílicas e técnicas de polimerização na resistência de união e dureza shore A de materiais reembasadores macios

    O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a resistência de união à tração e dureza Shore A de dois materiais reembasadores macios (Eversoft e Molloplast-B), processados juntamente com três resinas acrílicas de base de dentadura (SR Triplex, Lucitone 550 e Acron MC), polimerizadas com diferentes ciclos de polimerização. As amostras para o ensaio de tração eram divididas em dois segmentos de resina acrílica, cada um com 60 x 10 x 10 mm, e um segmento central de material reembasador macio, com 3 x 10 x 10 mm. Dez espécimes foram confeccionados para cada combinação resina acrílica/material reembasador, polimerizados por três ciclos diferentes de polimerização, como segue: SR Triplex - 2 horas a 100ºC; Lucitone 550 - 90 minutos a 73ºC, seguido de 2 horas a 100ºC, e Acron MC - energia por microondas por 10 minutos a 850W. As amostras foram testadas em uma máquina de ensaios universais MTS-810, a uma velocidade de 5 mm/min. Os valores médios de resistência de união foram calculados e expressos em megapascals (MPa), e o tipo de falha foi avaliado e anotado como coesiva, adesiva ou mista. As amostras para a avaliação da dureza Shore A consistiam de corpos-de-prova com dimensões de 36 x 7 x 6 mm preparados com os dois materiais macios de reembasamento. Dez amostras de cada material também foram polimerizadas pelos ciclos de polimerização já apresentados e a dureza foi determinada em um durômetro Shore A, de acordo com as normas D-2240 da ASTM. Os dados de ambos os testes foram analisados pela análise de variância e teste de Tukey permitindo concluir que: a) o maior valor de resistência de união foi apresentado pelo material Molloplast-B, quando processado com as resinas acrílicas Lucitone 550 (1,41 +0,15 MPa) e SR Triplex (1,40 + 0,10 MPa),...The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tensile bond strength and Shore A hardness of two soft denture liners (Eversoft and Molloplast-B), processed against three heat-cured denture base acrylic resins (SR Triplex, Lucitone 550 and Acron MC), and polymerized by different curing cycles (water bath and microwave energy). Tensile specimens consisted of two segments of acrylic resin, each 60 x 10 x 10 mm, and a central segment of soft liner, 3 x 10 x 10 mm. Ten specimens were prepared by each liner/resin combination, and were cured by three different curing cycles, as follows: SR Triplex - boiling water for 2 hours; Lucitone 550 - 73ºC for 90 minutes, plus 2 hours at 100ºC; and Acron MC - microwave activation at 850W for 10 minutes. Specimens were tested in an MTS-810 Universal Testing Machine, at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min. Mean bond strength was calculated and expressed in megapascals (MPa), and the type of failure was assessed and recorded as being cohesive, adhesive, or mixed. Shore A specimens consisted of 36 x 7 x 6 mm samples prepared with the two soft liners. Ten samples of each liner were polymerized by the curing cycles early presented. Hardness was determined in a Shore A durometer, according the ASTM D-2240 specification. Data from both tests were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey test, showing that: a) the highest bond strength was presented by Molloplast-B, when processed against Lucitone 550 (1.41 +0.15 MPa) and SR Triplex (1.40 + 0.10 MPa) acrylic resins, and the lowest values were observed for Eversoft, when processed against Acron MC resin (0.38 + 0.06 MPa), b) when polymerized by microwave energy, both Molloplast-B and Eversoft presented their lowest bond strength values, when compared with the groups cured in water bath (p< .05), and c)...(Complete abstract, click electronic access below
