Ring-Opening 1,3-Aminochalcogenation of Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes: A Three-Component Approach
A 1,3-aminothiolation was realized by reacting 2-substituted cyclopropane 1,1-dicarboxylates with sulfonamides and N-(arylthio)succinimides. Under Sn(OTf)2 catalysis the transformation proceeded smoothly to the corresponding ring-opened products bearing the sulfonamide in the 1-position next to the donor and the arylthio residue in the 3-position next to the acceptor. The procedure was extended to the corresponding selenium analogues by employing N-(phenylseleno)succinimides as an electrophilic selenium source
Ferrocenyl-substituted tetrahydrothiophenes via formal [3 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions of ferrocenyl thioketones with donor-acceptor cyclopropanes
Ferrocenyl thioketones reacted with donor-acceptor cyclopropanes in dichloromethane at room temperature in the presence of catalytic amounts of Sc(OTf)3 yielding tetrahydrothiophene derivatives, products of formal [3 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions, in moderate to high yields. In all studied cases, dimethyl 2-arylcyclopropane dicarboxylates reacted with the corresponding aryl ferrocenyl thioketones in a completely diastereoselective manner to form single products in which (C-2)-Ar and (C-5)-ferrocenyl groups were oriented in a cis-fashion. In contrast, the same cyclopropanes underwent reaction with alkyl ferrocenyl thioketones to form nearly equal amounts of both diastereoisomeric tetrahydrothiophenes. A low selectivity was also observed in the reaction of a 2-phthalimide-derived cyclopropane with ferrocenyl phenyl thioketone
Stereospecific Reaction of Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes with Thioketones: A Novel Access to Highly Substituted Tetrahydrothiophenes
Lewis-acid-catalyzed reactions of 2-substituted cyclopropane
1,1-dicarboxylates with thioketones are described. Highly
substituted tetrahydrothiophenes with two adjacent quaternary carbon
atoms were obtained in a stereospecific manner under mild conditions
and in high yield using AlCl3 as Lewis acid. Moreover, an
intramolecular approach was successfully implemented to gain
access to sulfur-bridged [n.2.1] bicyclic ring systems. Conversion of
selenoketones, the heavier analogs, under similar conditions resulted
in the formation of various tetrahydroselenophenes
Protic Ionic Liquid as Reagent, Catalyst, and Solvent: 1-Methylimidazolium Thiocyanate
We propose a new concept of the triple role of protic ionic liquids with nucleophilic anions: a) a regenerable solvent, b) a Brønsted acid inducing diverse transformations via general acid catalysis, and c) a source of a nucleophile. The efficiency of this strategy was demonstrated using thiocyanate-based protic ionic liquids for the ring-opening of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes. A wide variety of activated cyclopropanes were found to react with 1-methylimidazolium thiocyanate under mild metal-free conditions via unusual nitrogen attack of the ambident thiocyanate ion on the electrophilic center of the three-membered ring affording pyrrolidine-2-thiones bearing donor and acceptor substituents at the C(5) and C(3) atoms, respectively, in a single time-efficient step. The ability of 1-methylimidazolium thiocyanate to serve as a triplex reagent was exemplarily illustrated by (4+2)-annulation with 1-acyl-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)cyclopropane, epoxide ring-opening and other organic transformations
Brain Circuitries Involved in Semantic Interference by Demands of Emotional and Non-Emotional Distractors
BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated that the processes leading to the resolution of emotional and non-emotional interference conflicts are unrelated, involving separate networks. It is also known that conflict resolution itself suggests a considerable overlap of the networks. Our study is an attempt to examine how these findings may be related. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study neural responses of 24 healthy subjects to emotional and non-emotional conflict paradigms involving the presentation of congruent and incongruent word-face pairs based on semantic incompatibility between targets and distractors. In the emotional task, the behavioral interference conflict was greater (compared to the non-emotional task) and was paralleled by involvement of the extrastriate visual and posterodorsal medial frontal cortices. In both tasks, we also observed a common network including the dorsal anterior cingulate, the supplemental motor area, the anterior insula and the inferior prefrontal cortex, indicating that these brain structures are markers of experienced conflict. However, the emotional task involved conflict-triggered networks to a considerably higher degree. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our findings indicate that responses to emotional and non-emotional distractors involve the same systems, which are capable of flexible adjustments based on conflict demands. The function of systems related to conflict resolution is likely to be adjusted on the basis of an evaluation process that primarily involves the extrastriate visual cortex, with target playing a significant role
Supramolecular layers and versatile packing modes: the solid state behavior of ortho, ortho-linked bisphenols
A series of ortho-ortho-linked bisphenols featuring electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs) attached to the phenolic rings is reported. Their respective molecular structures and packing behaviors have been studied by X-ray diffraction, comparatively discussed and put into relation with the unsubstituted mother compound. Except for the mother compound, the molecular structures of all bisphenols studied here exhibit distorted aromatic moieties. Hence, the substituents studied here prevent proximal positioning of phenolic units and the formation of strong O-H···O hydrogen bonds. In the packing of the underivatized bisphenol we found a strand-like molecular arrangement featuring strong O-H···O hydrogen bonds and extensive edge-to-face contacts (C-H···π) between the bisphenol molecules. The introduction of EWGs to the aromatic moieties changes these intermolecular interactions into face-to-face contacts resulting either in bisphenol stacks or handshake-like motifs between two bisphenol molecules. In both cases, the C-H···π interactions are more or less replaced by C-H···O contacts as the prevalent non-covalent interaction. In the packing of two nitro bisphenols in their DMSO inclusion compounds an exciting layered arrangement is observed, which also matches with the pronounced foliated habitus of their crystals. Additionally, proton NMR was used to establish the binding coefficients between the respective bisphenols and DMSO in solution
Measurements of the leptonic branching fractions of the
Data collected with the DELPHI detector from 1993 to 1995 combined with previous DELPHI results for data from 1991 and 1992 yield the branching fractions B({\tau \rightarrow \mbox{\rm e} \nu \bar{\nu}}) = (17.877 \pm 0.109_{stat} \pm 0.110_{sys} )\% and
Search for scalar fermions and long-lived scalar leptons at centre-of-mass energies of 130 GeV to 172 GeV
Data taken by DELPHI during the 1995 and 1996 LEP runs have been used to search for the supersymmetric partners of electron, muon and tau leptons and of top and bottom quarks. The observations are in agreement with standard model predictions. Limits are set on sfermion masses. Searches for long lived scalar leptons from low scale supersymmetry breaking models exclude stau masses below 55~GeV/c at the 95\% confidence level, irrespective of the gravitino mass

National identity predicts public health support during a global pandemic.
Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = -0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics
