Morfometria das lâminas epidérmicas primárias e secundárias do casco de equinos
Foi estudado o comprimento das lâminas epidérmicas primárias e secundárias da pinça e dos quartos lateral e medial, distribuídas nos terços proximal, médio e distal dos cascos de equinos. Utilizaram-se os membros de oitos cavalos adultos utilizados para tração de carroças, que não apresentavam afecções podais, sendo quatro fêmeas e quatro machos, sem raça definida. Fragmentos foram retirados das diferentes regiões dos cascos e submetidos à técnica histológica convencional. As amostras foram coradas com H&E e analisadas em microscópio óptico. As lâminas epidérmicas primárias apresentaram-se maiores nos cascos dos membros torácicos em relação aos membros pélvicos nos terços proximal e médio e nas regiões do quarto medial e na pinça. As lâminas secundárias foram maiores também no membro torácico no terço médio e no quarto medial. Comparando-se o comprimento das lâminas epidérmicas entre as regiões do casco, observou-se que as lâminas primárias são menores no terço proximal e maiores na pinça, enquanto as menores lâminas secundárias estão no terço proximal e no quarto medial. Os resultados sugerem que a morfologia das lâminas nas diversas regiões do casco sofra influência do trabalho realizado pelo animal, assim como, das diferentes distribuições de força existentes no mesmo.We studied the length of primary and secondary epidermal laminae of the toe and the lateral and medial quarters of horses, distributed into proximal, middle and distal thirds of the hooves. Eight limbs from adult crossbred horses, four females and four males, used to pull carts without pedal conditions. Fragments were taken from different regions of the hooves and subjected
to conventional histological techniques. The samples were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and analyzed by light microscopy. The primary epidermal laminae were higher in the hooves of forelimbs compared to hindlimbs in the proximal and middle thirds and the regions of the medial quarter and toe. The secondary laminae were higher in forelimb of the middle third and medial quarter. Comparing the length of the epidermal laminae between hoof parts, it was seen that the primary laminae are lower in the proximal third and higher in the toe, while the secondary laminae are lower in the proximal third and medial quarter. The results suggested that the morphology of the laminae in the different regions of the hooves is influenced through the work performed by the animal, as well as through the different distribution of forces
Densidade das lâminas epidérmicas primárias e secundárias nos cascos de equinos
Diferenças na morfologia microscópica dos cascos dos membros pélvicos e torácicos dos equinos têm sido pouco relatadas na literatura, principalmente no tocante a distribuição de lâminas epidérmicas primárias e secundárias nas diversas regiões. O propósito deste estudo foi quantificar a densidade de lâminas epidérmicas primárias e secundárias no casco de equinos. Foram utilizados membros torácicos e pélvicos de oito equinos adultos e sem raça definida. Em uma secção transversal de aproximadamente 0,5cm de altura da sola dos cascos foi quantificada a densidade das lâminas epidérmicas primárias tanto na região da pinça quanto dos quartos lateral e medial. Fragmentos com aproximadamente 1cm³ foram retirados dos terços proximal, médio e distal do casco, nas diferentes regiões e submetidos a técnica histológica convencional, a densidade de lâminas epidérmicas secundárias foi quantificada com auxilio de microscópio óptico. Os dados foram analisados estatisticamente em relação aos membros torácicos e pélvicos e entre suas diversas regiões. A densidade de lâminas epidérmicas primárias varia ao redor da circunferência do casco, sendo maior na região da pinça do casco e diminui gradualmente em direção ao bulbo do casco, não existindo diferença entre membros pélvicos e torácicos. A densidade média de lâminas epidérmicas secundárias por lâmina epidérmica primária não varia em torno da circunferência dos cascos, assim como, quando comparada entre os membros torácicos e pélvicos. A variação da densidade das lâminas epidérmicas primárias em torno do casco parece fazer parte de uma resposta adaptativa às diferentes tensões existentes em cada região. O melhor entendimento da morfologia das estruturas do casco contribui na melhor compreensão do diagnóstico, fisiopatologia e tratamento das afecções que as acometem.Differences in the microscopic morphology of the hoof in forelimbs and hindlimbs of horses have been scarcely reported in the literature, especially concerning the distribution of primary and secondary epidermal laminae in the different regions. This study aimed to determine the density of primary and secondary epidermal laminae in the hoof of horses. For this, it was used fore and hindlimbs of 16 adult mixed breed horses. With a cross section 0.5 cm above the sole, it was quantified the primary epidermal laminae in the regions of the toe, and of lateral and medial quarters. Fragments with about 1cm ³ were taken from the proximal, middle and distal thirds of the hooves, in the different regions, subjected to conventional histological techniques and examined with an optical microscope. Data were statistically analyzed in relation to the fore and hindlimbs and between their various regions. The density of primary epidermal laminae varied around the hoof circumference, with greater values in the hoof toe, which gradually decreased towards the bulb of the hoof, without difference between thoracic and pelvic limbs. The average density of the secondary epidermal laminae per primary epidermal lamina does not change around the circumference of the hoof. Our findings indicated that the density of epidermal laminae is not different between fore and hindlimbs. The variation in the density of primary epidermal laminae around the hoof seems to be part of an adaptive response to different stresses in each region. A better understanding of the structural morphology contributes to a better understanding of the diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment of disorders that affect the hoof
Reallocation of foliicolous species of the genus Strigula into six genera (lichenized Ascomycota, Dothideomycetes, Strigulaceae)
Strigula sensu lato has been previously defined based on phenotype characters as a rather broad genus including tropical to temperate species growing on a wide array of substrata. In this study, based on a multilocus phylogenetic approach, we show that foliicolous species form six well-delimited clades that correlate with diagnostic phenotype features, including thallus morphology, carbonization of the involucrellum and excipulum, ascospore dimensions, and type of macroconidia. Given the topology, with five of the six clades emerging on long stem branches, and the strong phenotypical differentiation between the clades, we recognize these at the genus level, making mostly use of previously established genus names. Four genera, namely Phylloporis, Puiggariella, Raciborskiella, and Racoplaca, are resurrected for the S. phyllogena, S. nemathora, S. janeirensis, and S. subtilissima groups, respectively, whereas one new genus, Serusiauxiella gen. nov., is introduced for a novel lineage with peculiar macroconidia. The only sequenced non-foliicolous species, S. jamesii, is not closely related to these six foliicolous lineages but clusters with Flavobathelium and Phyllobathelium, revealing it as an additional undescribed genus-level lineage being treated elsewhere. Within the new genus Serusiauxiella, three new species are described: Serusiauxiella filifera sp. nov., S. flagellata sp. nov., and S. sinensis sp. nov. In addition, ten new combinations are proposed: Phylloporis austropunctata comb. nov., P. radiata comb. nov., P. vulgaris comb. nov., Puiggariella confluens comb. et stat. nov., P. nemathora comb. nov., P. nigrocincta comb. nov., Racoplaca maculata comb. nov., R. melanobapha comb. nov., R. transversoundulata, and R. tremens comb. nov. We also report on a peculiar, previously unrecognized growth behaviour of the macroconidial appendages in Strigula s.lat
Silver(I) 1,10-Phenanthroline Complexes Are Active against Fonsecaea Pedrosoi Viability and Negatively Modulate Its Potential Virulence Attributes
The genus Fonsecaea is one of the etiological agents of chromoblastomycosis (CBM), a chronic subcutaneous disease that is difficult to treat. This work aimed to evaluate the effects of copper(II), manganese(II) and silver(I) complexes coordinated with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen)/1,10- phenanthroline-5,6-dione (phendione) on Fonsecaea spp. Our results revealed that most of these complexes were able to inhibit F. pedrosoi, F. monophora and F. nubica conidial viability with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 0.6 to 100 M. The most effective complexes against F. pedrosoi planktonic conidial cells, the main etiologic agent of CBM, were [Ag(phen)2]ClO4 and [Ag2(3,6,9-tdda)(phen)4].EtOH, (tdda: 3,6,9-trioxaundecanedioate), displaying MIC values equal to 1.2 and 0.6 M, respectively. These complexes were effective in reducing the viability of F. pedrosoi biofilm formation and maturation. Silver(I) tdda-phen, combined with itraconazole, reduced the viability and extracellular matrix during F. pedrosoi biofilm development. Moreover, both silver(I) complexes inhibited either metallo- or aspartic-type peptidase activities of F. pedrosoi as well as its conidia into mycelia transformation and melanin production. In addition, the complexes induced the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species in F. pedrosoi. Taken together, our data corroborate the antifungal action of metal-phen complexes, showing they represent a therapeutic option for fungal infections, including CBM
Socioeconomic risk markers of arthropod-borne virus (arbovirus) infections: A systematic literature review and meta-analysis
INTRODUCTION: Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are of notable public health importance worldwide, owing to their potential to cause explosive outbreaks and induce debilitating and potentially life-threatening disease manifestations. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to assess the relationship between markers of socioeconomic position (SEP) and infection due to arboviruses with mosquito vectors.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic search on PubMed, Embase, and LILACS databases to identify studies published between 1980 and 2020 that measured the association of SEP markers with arbovirus infection. We included observational studies without geographic location or age restrictions. We excluded studies from grey literature, reviews and ecological studies. Study findings were extracted and summarised, and pooled estimates were obtained using random-effects meta-analyses.
RESULTS: We identified 36 observational studies using data pertaining to 106 524 study participants in 23 geographic locations that empirically examined the relationship between socioeconomic factors and infections caused by seven arboviruses (dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, Rift Valley fever, Sindbis, West Nile and Zika viruses). While results were varied, descriptive synthesis pointed to a higher risk of arbovirus infection associated with markers of lower SEP, including lower education, income poverty, low healthcare coverage, poor housing materials, interrupted water supply, marital status (married, divorced or widowed), non-white ethnicities and migration status. CONCLUSION: Evidence from this systematic review suggests that lower SEP increases the risk of acquiring arboviral infection; however, there was large heterogeneity across studies. Further studies are required to delineate the relationship between specific individual, household and community-level SEP indicators and arbovirus infection risks to help inform targeted public health interventions.

Antihypertensive therapeutic potential of citronellal
Cardiovascular effects induced by citronellal in rats were investigated in this study. In LNAME hypertensive rats, the oral acute administration of citronellal (200 mg/kg) was able to significantly reduce the blood pressure. In normotensive rats, citronellal (5-40 mg/kg, i.v.) induced hypotension, which was not affected by pre-treatment with atropine, hexamethonium, L-NAME or indomethacin, and bradycardia, which was abolished by atropine and hexamethonium, but not by L-NAME or indomethacin. ECG records revealed that citronellal induced sinoatrial block, which was abolished after atropine. In intact rings of rat mesenteric artery pre-contracted with phenylephrine (10 μM), citronellal (10 –6 to 10 –1 M) was able to induce relaxations (Emax = 106.3 ± 9.4 %) that were not affected by endothelium removal or after pre-contraction with KCl 80 mM. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that citronellal reduces blood pressure. Furthermore, citronellal induces endothelium-independent vasorelaxation in rat artery that appears to involve inhibition of Ca2+ influx.Colegio de Farmacéuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aire
β-cyclodextrin/isopentyl caffeate inclusion complex: synthesis, characterization and antileishmanial activity
Isopentyl caffeate (ICaf) is a bioactive ester widely distributed in nature. Our patented work has shown promising results of this molecule against Leishmania. However, ICaf shows poor solubility, which limits its usage in clinical settings. In this work, we have proposed the development of an inclusion complex of ICaf in -cyclodextrin (-CD), with the aim to improve the drug solubility, and thus, its bioavailability. The inclusion complex (ICaf:-CD) was developed applying three distinct methods, i.e., physical mixture (PM), kneading (KN) or co-evaporation (CO) in different molar proportions (0.25:1, 1:1 and 2:1). Characterization of the complexes was carried out by thermal analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and molecular docking. The ICaf:-CD complex in a molar ratio of 1:1 obtained by CO showed the best complexation and, therefore, was selected for further analysis. Solubility assay showed a marked improvement in the ICaf:-CD (CO, 1:1) solubility profile when compared to the pure ICaf compound. Cell proliferation assay using ICaf:-CD complex showed an IC50 of 3.8 and 2.7 µg/mL against L. amazonesis and L. chagasi promastigotes, respectively.
