Social Innovation as a Driver of Urban Transformation? The Case of Planning Approaches in the Dominican Republic

This article assesses the role of social innovation (SI) as a driver of urban transformation through the case-based analysis of an ambitious social housing urban project in the Dominican Republic, specifically in the emblematic slum La Barquita, in the heart of northern Santo Domingo. This project was led by a dedicated public body, URBE, which is in charge of the coordination of several institutions and the management of the community participation. Since La Nueva Barquita integrates dimensions regarding the satisfaction of human needs, change in social relations, and increase of citizens’ sociopolitical capabilities, it may be considered a socially innovative initiative in the territorial development discussion. The article builds first on the literature on SI by drawing attention on governance and institutional structures in specific urban contexts. Based on a series of semi-direct interviews, it then focuses on the analysis of key moments regarding the definition, implementation and evaluation of the institutional dimension of the project from its launching in 2013

Microfield Fluctuations and Spectral Line Shapes in Strongly Coupled Two-Component Plasmas

The spectral line shapes for hydrogen-like heavy ion emitters embedded in strongly correlated two-component electron-ion plasmas are investigated with numerical simulations. For that purpose the microfield fluctuations are calculated by molecular dynamics simulations where short range quantum effects are taken into account by using a regularized Coulomb potential for the electron-ion interaction. The microfield fluctuations are used as input in a numerical solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation for the radiating electron. In distinction to the standard impact and quasistatic approximations the method presented here allows to account for the correlations between plasma ions and electrons. The shapes of the Ly-alpha line in Al are investigated in the intermediate regime. The calculations are in good agreement with experiments on the Ly-alpha line in laser generated plasmas.Comment: 5 figure

Enhancement of bichromatic high-harmonic generation with a high-frequency field

Using a high-frequency field superposed to a linearly polarized bichromatic laser field composed by a wave with frequency ω\omega and a wave with frequency 2ω2\omega , we show it is possible to enhance the intensity of a group of high harmonics in orders of magnitude. These harmonics have frequencies about 30% higher than the monochromatic-cutoff frequency, and, within the three-step-model framework, correspond to a set of electron trajectories for which tunneling ionization is strongly suppressed. Particular features in the observed enhancement suggest that the high-frequency field provides an additional mechanism for the electron to reach the continuum. This interpretation is supported by a time-frequency analysis of the harmonic yield. The additional high frequency field permits the control of this group of harmonics leaving all other sets of harmonics practically unchanged, which is an advantage over schemes involving only bichromatic fields.Comment: 6 pages RevTex, 5 figures (ps files), Changes in text, figures, references and equations include

    José Martís Denken über Wirtschaft

    Get PDF
José Martí (1853-1895) is well known as the spiritual leader of Cuban independence and revolution. The famous writer and intellectual has left a rich legacy of political commentaries, speeches, poems and letters. Many of these texts have been published in both, North and South America. This article examines José Martí's reflections on economic matters and dwells on the economic relevance of his political writings. His texts are contextualised in the specific Latin American conjuncture at the end of 19th century. From this point of view some of his most important texts have to be understood as political interventions in favour of national liberation. His specific understanding of economics as a matter of trade and commerce results in privileging certain topics, mainly problems related to free trade and an American monetary union. However, there is a systematic neglect for the relations of production.Series: SRE - Discussion Paper
