    Dynamical Instability in a Trimeric Chain of Interacting Bose-Einstein Condensates

    We analyze thoroughly the mean-field dynamics of a linear chain of three coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, where both the tunneling and the central-well relative depth are adjustable parameters. Owing to its nonintegrability, entailing a complex dynamics with chaos occurrence, this system is a paradigm for longer arrays whose simplicity still allows a thorough analytical study.We identify the set of dynamics fixed points, along with the associated proper modes, and establish their stability character depending on the significant parameters. As an example of the remarkable operational value of our analysis, we point out some macroscopic effects that seem viable to experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Flux dependent 1.5 MeV self-ion beam induced sputtering from Gold nanostructured thin films

    We discuss four important aspects of 1.5 MeV Au2+ ion-induced flux dependent sputtering from gold nanostrcutures (of an average size 7.6 nm and height 6.9 nm) that are deposited on silicon substrates: (a) Au sputtering yield at the ion flux of 6.3x10^12 ions cm-2 s-1 is found to be 312 atoms/ion which is about five times the sputtering yield reported earlier under identical irradiation conditions at a lower beam flux of 10^9 ions cm-2 s-1, (b) the sputtered yield increases with increasing flux at lower fluence and reduces at higher fluence (1.0x10^15 ions cm-2) for nanostructured thin films while the sputtering yield increases with increasing flux and fluence for thick films (27.5 nm Au deposited on Si) (c) Size distribution of sputtered particles has been found to vary with the incident beam flux showing a bimodal distribution at higher flux and (d) the decay exponent obtained from the size distributions of sputtered particles showed an inverse power law dependence ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 as a function of incident beam flux. The exponent values have been compared with existing theoretical models to understand the underlying mechanism. The role of wafer temperature associated with the beam flux has been invoked for a qualitative understanding of the sputtering results in both the nanostructured thin films and thick films.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures, 1 table To be Appeared in J.     Stabilizing the Complex Structure in Heterotic Calabi-Yau Vacua

    In this paper, we show that the presence of gauge fields in heterotic Calabi-Yau compacitifications causes the stabilisation of some, or all, of the complex structure moduli of the Calabi-Yau manifold while maintaining a Minkowski vacuum. Certain deformations of the Calabi-Yau complex structure, with all other moduli held fixed, can lead to the gauge bundle becoming non-holomorphic and, hence, non-supersymmetric. This leads to an F-term potential which stabilizes the corresponding complex structure moduli. We use 10- and 4-dimensional field theory arguments as well as a derivation based purely on algebraic geometry to show that this picture is indeed correct. An explicit example is presented in which a large subset of complex structure moduli is fixed. We demonstrate that this type of theory can serve as the hidden sector in heterotic vacua and can co-exist with realistic particle physics.Comment: 17 pages, Late

    The "quasi-stable" lipid shelled microbubble in response to consecutive ultrasound pulses

    Controlled microbubble stability upon exposure to consecutive ultrasound exposures is important for increased sensitivity in contrast enhanced ultrasound diagnostics and manipulation for localised drug release. An ultra high-speed camera operating at 13 × 10 6 frames per second is used to show that a physical instability in the encapsulating lipid shell can be promoted by ultrasound, causing loss of shell material that depends on the characteristics of the microbubble motion. This leads to well characterized disruption, and microbubbles follow an irreversible trajectory through the resonance peak, causing the evolution of specific microbubble spectral signatures. © 2012 American Institute of Physics

    Heterotic Line Bundle Standard Models

    In a previous publication, arXiv:1106.4804, we have found 200 models from heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications with line bundles, which lead to standard models after taking appropriate quotients by a discrete symmetry and introducing Wilson lines. In this paper, we construct the resulting standard models explicitly, compute their spectrum including Higgs multiplets, and analyze some of their basic properties. After removing redundancies we find about 400 downstairs models, each with the precise matter spectrum of the supersymmetric standard model, with one, two or three pairs of Higgs doublets and no exotics of any kind. In addition to the standard model gauge group, up to four Green-Schwarz anomalous U(1) symmetries are present in these models, which constrain the allowed operators in the four-dimensional effective supergravity. The vector bosons associated to these anomalous U(1) symmetries are massive. We explicitly compute the spectrum of allowed operators for each model and present the results, together with the defining data of the models, in a database of standard models accessible at http://www-thphys.physics.ox.ac.uk/projects/CalabiYau/linebundlemodels/index.html. Based on these results we analyze elementary phenomenological properties.     Oscillatory decay of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

    We study the decay of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with negative effective interaction energy. With a decreasing atom number due to losses, the atom-atom interaction becomes less important and the system undergoes a transition from a bistable Josephson regime to the monostable Rabi regime, displaying oscillations in phase and number. We study the equations of motion and derive an analytical expression for the oscillation amplitude. A quantum trajectory simulation reveals that the classical description fails for low emission rates, as expected from analytical considerations. Observation of the proposed effect will provide evidence for negative effective interaction.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figue
