    Upgrade of the CMS Hadron Outer Calorimeter with SIPMs

    AbstractThe CMS Hadron Outer Calorimeter (HO) is undergoing an upgrade to replace the existing hybrid photodetectors (HPDs) with silicon photo-multipliers (SIPMs). The chosen device is the Hamamatsu 3×3 mm2 50μm pitch MPPC. The system has been developed to be a “drop-in” replacement of the HPDs. A complete control system of bias voltage generation, leakage current monitoring, temperature monitoring, and temperature control using solid state Peltier coolers has been developed and tested. 108 channels of the system have been installed into CMS and operated for more than 2 years. The complete system of about 2200 channels is in production and will be installed in the next LHC long shut-down scheduled for 2013

    Realistic mathematics education: Mathematical reasoning and communication skills in rural contexts

    Mathematics learning has always been a problem in the world of education in Indonesia especially in the Province of Maluku, which is a thousand island area. The geographical position of Maluku, which is an area of the archipelago, is quite extensive, affecting the quality of students in mathematics. One approach that is recommended to overcome mathematical problems of rural island-based students is realistic mathematics education (RME). The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of RME on mathematical reasoning and communication skills in a rural context. The research design used was quasi experiment. The sample size was 130 students from several junior high schools in Central Maluku Regency. The instrument developed was in the form of problem descriptions to measure students' mathematical reasoning and communication skills. The findings prove that RME has a significant influence on students' mathematical reasoning and communication skills. Thus, RME can be recommended in improving students' mathematical reasoning and communication skills in the island-based rural context

    Complementary and Integrative Therapies for the Management of Insomnia in Chronic Disease: An Applied Research Project

    One-half of all adults in America have a diagnosis of at least one chronic disease. Up to 80% of people with chronic diseases suffer from insomnia, creating a significant health burden. Healthcare providers (HCPs) do not routinely address insomnia and primarily use pharmaceuticals to manage insomnia. The purpose of this research is to co-create with HCPs an educational artifact that helps them inform their chronically ill patients about evidence-based complementary and integrative therapies (CIT) for insomnia management. Based on a design and development culture of inquiry and research method, we used the literature to create a preliminary educational artifact focused on four evidence-based CIT for insomnia management: aromatherapy, mindfulness meditation, relaxation and breathing techniques, and yoga. These modalities are safe, inexpensive, and accessible from home for individuals with chronic disease. We collected evaluative feedback from a convenience sample of HCPs. The top two factors impacting HCP integration of CIT into practice are lack of reimbursement and time constraints. HCPs support an artifact that addresses affordable, accessible, evidence-based modalities to complement conventional treatments for insomnia management. Since these integrative practices may be unfamiliar to some HCPs, our research confirms that an accessible educational artifact may effectively support the integration of aromatherapy, mindfulness meditation, relaxation and breathing techniques, and yoga into mainstream practices. We conclude our applied research with recommendations for the key components of an educational artifact

    A continuación se llevará a cabo el desarrollo de un estudio de viabilidad para la creación de una empresa comercializadora de ropa femenina en Pereira, esta idea de negocio nace del deseo de los integrantes de ser emprendedores y aportar de manera positiva al desarrollo de la ciudad. Al visualizar la necesidad de las mujeres de sentirse únicas y exclusivas surgen grandes oportunidades de incursionar en el negocio de comercialización de ropa femenina, teniendo presente además que este es un mercado muy atractivo el cual está dispuesto a pagar suficiente dinero para satisfacer las necesidades de vestido y el cual abarca gran parte de la población. Para garantizar que esta idea se puede llevar a cabo de forma correcta, se realizaron los siguientes estudios: estudio de mercados, el cual permitió identificar la viabilidad comercial de la empresa;el estudio técnico permitió identificar el tamaño del proyecto y su localización; el estudio organizacional y legal permitió planificar la estructura administrativa y organizacional de la empresa identificando todo tipo de factor que afecte positiva y negativamente en su desarrollo y por último el estudio financiero permitió evaluar los presupuestos y las inversiones para de esta manera saber si es rentable llevar a la práctica esta idea de negocio

    Jenis penelitian ini adalah kualitatif deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh siswa dalam menyelesaikan soal persamaan eksponen. Penelitian ini dilakukan dikelas X SMA Xaverius Ambon tahun ajaran 2022/2023 pada bulan juli sampai bulan agustus 2022. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah teknik tes dan wawancara. Instrumen penelitian yaitu lembar tes dan pedoman wawancara. Data hasil tes dianalisis agar dapat mengetahui jenis-jenis kesalahan dan juga sebagai dasar pemilihan subjek wawancara yaitu tiga orang siawa. Data hasil wawancara digunakan sebagai pembanding data hasil tes. Analisis data diambil melalui langkah-langkah reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Kesimpulan yang diperoleh yaitu kesalahan yang dilakukan siswa dalam menyelesaikan soal persamaan eksponen, dilihat dari objek matematika yaitu kesalahan fakta, kesalahan konsep, kesalahan prinsip, dan kesalahan operas

    AbstractThe growth kinetic parameters (maximum growth rate, μ; lag time, λ and maximum population, k) of Salmonella spp. on the peel and in the pulp custard apple at 10, 15, 20 and 30°C were determinated. Samples of peel and pulp of custard apple were inoculated with a cocktail of three strains of Salmonella spp. (S. Typhimurium, S. Enteretidis and S. Montevideo) and further stored at 10, 15, 20 and 30°C. Salmonella can survive and multiply in both, the peel and in the pulp of the custard apple. Lower temperatures retard, but do not prevent Salmonella growth

    Protecting forests at the expense of native grasslands: Land-use policy encourages open-habitat loss in the Brazilian cerrado biome

    The agricultural conversion of natural habitats is one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss worldwide. In the ∼2 million km2 Brazilian cerrado biome, a global biodiversity hotspot, vast areas have been converted into croplands and cattle pastures. Because the cerrado biome is overwhelmingly contained within private lands, Brazil's environmental legislation should serve as a decisive instrument in protecting these natural ecosystems. We assessed the role of Legal Reserves (LRs), legally defined as the minimum proportion of private landholdings set aside to protect natural vegetation, in the conservation of the cerrado biome. We assume that the property-scale allocation of LRs is primarily based on economic decision-making, creating a bias against cerrado protection. We therefore assessed the area ratio between forest vegetation (FV) and grassland vegetation (GV) areas across LRs within 48,762 landholdings, 9 formal protected areas (PAs) and 34 Indigenous Lands (ILs) within the cerrado (sensu lato) of the 903,357-km2 state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. We show that there are 7.26 ha of forest lands for each hectare of native grasslands within private RLs of the cerrado biome within Mato Grosso, a ratio almost three-fold larger than that found in formal PAs and ILs. ILs protect in absolute values (hectares) six-fold more native grassland vegetation than PAs. We discuss the policy relevance of this severe land-use bias in maintaining the heterogeneity of cerrado habitats for biodiversity conservation within private properties, which account for 90% of the entire cerrado biome

    Priming in lettuce seeds : Condicionamento osmótico em sementes de alface

    One of the methods used to promote the rapid and uniform germination of vegetable seeds is the use of osmotic conditioning. The technique aims to regulate the osmotic potential of the solution, thus restricting the entry of water into the seeds without them germinating during the process. This work evaluated the germination of lettuce seeds of Grand Rapids, Everglades, and Verônica cultivars, submitted to osmotic conditioning. The seeds were immersed in polyethylene glycol solutions (PEG 6000) at potentials of 0.0; -0.6; -0.8, and -1.0 MPa, and remained in imbibition for 14, 24, and 48 h. After this period, the seeds were germinated on paper, moistened with water at 2.5 times their mass, and kept at 20ºC for seven days. The experimental design used was completely randomized, in a factorial scheme with three cultivars, four osmotic potentials, and three temperatures, with four replications of 25 seeds each. The germination percentage, the germination speed index, the mean speed of germination, and the mean germination time were evaluated. Data were subjected to analysis of residual normality by the Shapiro-Wilk test and the homogeneity of variances using the Bartlett test and submitted to analysis of variance. Data from osmotic potential and time of imbibition were submitted to polynomial regression. The treatment means were compared at 5% probability. Seeds of ‘Grand Rapids’ and ‘Everglades’ showed positive effects after osmoconditiong treatments
