Titanium additions to MgB2 conductors
A series of doping experiments are reported for MgB2 conductors that have
been synthesized using doped boron fibers prepared by chemical vapor
deposition(CVD) methods. Undoped MgB2 samples prepared from CVD prepared fibers
consistently give critical current densities, Jc, in the range of 500,000
A/cm^2 in low field at 5K. These values fall by a factor of about 100 as the
magnetic field increases to 3T. For heavily Ti-doped boron fibers where the
B/Ti ratio is comparable to 1, there is a substantial suppression of both Tc,
superconducting volume fraction, and Jc values. If, however, a sample with a
few percent Ti in B is deposited on a carbon coated SiC substrate and reacted
at 1100 degrees C for 15 min, then Tc is suppressed only a couple of degrees
Kelvin and critical current densities are found to be approximately 2-5 x 10^6
A/cm^2 for superconducting layers ranging from 4-10 micrometers thick. These
materials show Jc values over 10,000 A/cm^2 at 25K and 1.3 T.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
Long-term trends in depression among women separated from abusive partners
This study tested a cumulative adversity hypothesis, where differences in postseparation
stressors among battered women were expected to lead to a widening gap in levels of
women’s depression over time. Ninety-four women separated fromtheir abusive partners
were interviewed six times over a 2-year period. Consistent with the hypothesis, inequalities
grew over time.Women who were exposed to the greatest amount of violence and secondary
stressors shortly after shelter exit experienced relatively higher levels of depression
that either did not improve or significantly increased with time. Social support was

Trends in the proportion of second or later primaries among all newly diagnosed malignant cancers
BACKGROUND: Improvements in cancer survival mean that an increasing number of survivors may live long enough beyond their initial cancer to be diagnosed with additional independent primary cancers. The proportion of newly diagnosed cancers that are second- or higher-order primaries and how this proportion has changed over the past several decades were examined. METHODS: Data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program were used to identify incident malignant primaries diagnosed between 1975 and 2017. Using the SEER sequence number, the authors tabulated the proportion of all cancers in each calendar year that were second- or higher-order primaries. The average annual percent change (AAPC) was then calculated to assess how this proportion has changed over time. RESULTS: Analyses included nearly 4.9 million incident cancers diagnosed during 1975-2017. The proportion of all cancers that were second- or higher-order increased steadily from 9.77% during 1975-1984 to 21.03% during 2015-2017, reflecting an AAPC of 2.41% (95% CI, 2.16%-2.65%). In 2015-2017, second- or higher-order cancers were most prevalent among cancers of the bladder (28.79%), followed by lung and bronchus (28.07%), melanoma (27.88%), and leukemia (26.10%). The highest AAPCs over the study period were observed for melanoma (4.05%), leukemia (3.51%), and lung and bronchus (3.36%). CONCLUSIONS: The proportion of newly diagnosed cancers that are second- or higher-order has grown rapidly over the past several decades and currently exceeds 20%. Continued monitoring of second and later primaries will be critical for anticipating the future impact on cancer treatment and survivorship care
Superconductivity in MgB_2 doped with Ti and C
Measurements of the superconducting upper critical field, H_{c2}, and
critical current density, J_c, have been carried out for MgB_2 doped with Ti
and/or C in order to explore the problems encountered if these dopants are used
to enhance the superconducting performance. Carbon replaces boron in the MgB_2
lattice and apparently shortens the electronic mean free path thereby raising
H_c2. Titanium forms precipitates of either TiB or TiB_2 that enhance the flux
pinning and raise J_c. Most of these precipitates are intra-granular in the
MgB_2 phase. If approximately 0.5% Ti and approximately 2% C are co-deposited
with B to form doped boron fibers and these fibers are in turn reacted in Mg
vapor to form MgB_2, the resulting superconductor has H_{c2}(T=0) ~ 25 T and
J_c ~ 10,000 A/cm**2 at 5 K and 2.2 T.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure
Issues in Research on the Young Chronically III Child
A major goal of research on chronic illness in children is to determine how the illness interacts with developmental processes. The child must be studied within the context of the family, the school, and the health care system. Problems in research include the use of appropriate control groups and matching on control variables. The generic, or cross-categorical, approach has led to the identification of factors affecting children regardless of particular illness. Metallic ferromagnetism without exchange splitting
In the band theory of ferromagnetism there is a relative shift in the
position of majority and minority spin bands due to the self-consistent field
due to opposite spin electrons. In the simplest realization, the Stoner model,
the majority and minority spin bands are rigidly shifted with respect to each
other. Here we consider models at the opposite extreme, where there is no
overall shift of the energy bands. Instead, upon spin polarization one of the
bands broadens relative to the other. Ferromagnetism is driven by the resulting
gain in kinetic energy. A signature of this class of mechanisms is that a
transfer of spectral weight in optical absorption from high to low frequencies
occurs upon spin polarization. We show that such models arise from generalized
tight binding models that include off-diagonal matrix elements of the Coulomb
interaction. For certain parameter ranges it is also found that reentrant
ferromagnetism occurs. We examine properties of these models at zero and finite
temperatures, and discuss their possible relevance to real materials
Switching model with two habitats and a predator involving group defence
Switching model with one predator and two prey species is considered. The
prey species have the ability of group defence. Therefore, the predator will be
attracted towards that habitat where prey are less in number. The stability
analysis is carried out for two equilibrium values. The theoretical results are
compared with the numerical results for a set of values. The Hopf bifuracation
analysis is done to support the stability results
The use of an e-learning constructivist solution in workplace learning
We wished to investigate whether an e-learning approach which uses constructivist principles can be successfully applied to train employees in a highly specialised skill thought to require expert individuals and extensive prolonged training. The approach involved the development of an e-learning package which included simulations and interactivity, then experimental testing in a case study workplace environment with the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data to assess the effectiveness of the package. Our study shows that this e-learning strategy improved the skills of the inexperienced
operator significantly. We therefore propose that such programmes could be used as a work based training aid and used as a model system for the training of employees in complex skilled tasks in the workplace. This research demonstrates that the e-learning can be applied outside the traditional learning environment to train unskilled employees to undertake complex practical tasks which traditionally would involve prohibitively expensive instruction. This work also illustrates that simulations and interactivity are powerful tools in the design of successful e-learning packages in preparing learners for real world practical situations. Finally this study shows that workplace learners can be better served by elearning environments rather than conventional training as they allow asynchronous learning and private study which are valued by employees who have other demands on their time and are more comfortable receiving tuition privately Relevance to industry: E-learning using constructivist principles, and incorporating simulations and interactivity can be used successfully in the training of highly specialised and skilled tasks required in the
modern workplace
Path Integral Description of a Semiclassical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Model
The electron motion along a chain is described by a continuum version of the
Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonian in which phonon fields and electronic
coordinates are mapped onto the time scale. The path integral formalism allows
us to derive the non local source action for the particle interacting with the
oscillators bath. The method can be applied for any value of the {\it e-ph}
coupling. The path integral dependence on the model parameters has been
analysed by computing the partition function and some thermodynamical
properties from up to room temperature. A peculiar upturn in the low
temperature {\it heat capacity over temperature} ratio (pointing to a glassy
like behavior) has been ascribed to the time dependent electronic hopping along
the chain
