Coaching and Experiential Learning in an MBA Leadership Certificate Program

    Get PDF
In turbulent economic times, tuition-driven universities often search for impactful ways to differentiate themselves from their competitors. Differentiators may be particularly important in MBA programs, which are among the more lucrative academic offerings. The present study tracked participant reflections from the coaching component of an MBA leadership certificate program through Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle (concrete experience, reflections, abstract conceptualizations, active experimentation) and the coaches’ roles during the cycle as educators. We paired participants with professional coaches and community leaders so they could create and achieve their goals and action plans. During their time meeting with their coaches (concrete experiences), 70 percent reported interactions indicating they had developed personal relationships. Upon reflection, 90 percent reported interactions with a subject matter expert who analyzed and organized the subject matter of their discussions. While conceptualizing, 90 percent reported their coach set standards or performance objectives. When actively testing their conceptualizations, 70 percent reported their coach provided one-on-one developmental feedback. Results provide empirical support for components of Kolb and Kolb’s (2017) Experiential Learning Theory in learning and the acquisition of knowledge, along with practical implications for those establishing coaching programs and leadership certificates in academia

Point-of-Sale Report to the Nation: Realizing the Power of States and Communities to Change the Tobacco Retail and Policy Landscape

    Get PDF
Advancing Science and Policy in the Retail Environment (ASPiRE) is funded by the National Cancer Institute\u27s (NCI) State and Community Tobacco Control (SCTC) Research Initiative. ASPiRE is a consortium of researchers from the Center for Public Health Systems Science (CPHSS) as Washington University in St. Louis, the Stanford Prevention Research Center, and the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health. In 2011, ASPiRE received a five-year grant from SCTC to conduct research on how to maximize state and local policies to restrict tobacco marketing at the point of sale (POS) and in the broader retail environment. It is important for professionals looking to advance retail policy work to understand the current retail and legal landscape, as well as potential policy options. We gave the first snapshot of the tobacco retail and policy environments in the first Report to the Nation. This report provides new findings on tobacco retailer density, examines changes in product availability and marketing and promotion at retailers since our first report, and documents the growth in retail policy activity in states and localities since 2012. We also present reported barriers to retail policy activity, helpful resources, examples of recent policy successes, and a roadmap of strategies to help demonstrate how states and communities are changing the tobacco retail and policy landscape.https://openscholarship.wustl.edu/cphss/1047/thumbnail.jp

Best Practices User Guide: Health Equity in Tobacco Prevention and Control

    Get PDF
This user guide was created to help tobacco control staff and partners implement evidence-based best practices by translating research into practical guidance. The user guides focus on strategies (e.g., programs and interventions) that have shown strong or promising evidence of effectiveness. Recommendations in this guide are suggestions for programs implementing strategies to improve health equity.https://openscholarship.wustl.edu/cphss/1076/thumbnail.jp

Molecular perturbations in cholangiocarcinoma: is it time for precision medicine?

    Get PDF
The complexity of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) cellularity and the molecular perturbation mechanisms that underlie the diversity of growth patterns of this malignancy remain a clinical concern. Tumours of the biliary system display significant intrinsic chemoresistance, caused by significant stromal involvement and genome–wide tumour heterogeneity, hampering disease remission and palliation as well as promoting the metastatic behaviour. It is crucial to advance our present understanding of the risk and molecular pathogenesis of CCA. This will facilitate the delineation of patient subsets based on molecular perturbations and adjust for precision therapies
