    Indian fisheries sector plays an important role in the socio-economic development of the country, in view of its potential contribution to national income, nutritidnal security, employment opportunities, social objectives and export earnings. FIsheries sector contributes 4.3 per cent to the agricultural GDP and export earnings are presently valued at over Rs. 6,700 crores from a volume of 4.6 lakh,tonnes. Marine products form an important group of primary commodity exported from India accounting for about four per cellt of the total export earnings. The important marine products exported from India are frozen shrimp, frozen lobster, frozen fish, frozen squid and frozen cuttlefish

    Entrepreneurship based empowerment among fisherwomen self help groups of Kerala

    The present study was conducted to analyse the extent of empowerment achieved by fisherwomen through participation in the entrepreneurial activities of self help groups (SHGs) functioning in the fisheries sector. Data were collected from 180 SHG members in the Kollam, Ernakulam and Kasargod districts of Kerala. Aquaculture (55.5%) and value addition of fish (45.5%) were the entrepreneurial activities adopted by fisherwomen SHGs. Empowerment level of each SHG member was quantified by modifying the existing empowerment dimensions into an Empowerment Index (EI), consisting of 8 sub-dimensions. Extent of empowerment was found out by taking the difference of empowerment index before and after joining the SHG. Among the eight empowerment dimensions, higher difference was observed in confidence building (0.43) followed by economic empowerment (0.42) and decision making pattern (0.41). The study revealed that the level of involvement in entrepreneurial activity has increased the empowerment in terms of confidence building, self-esteem, decision making pattern, psychological and economic empowerment. However, the existing fisheries extension interventions through extension contact and training were found to be associated with only self esteem and psychological empowerment. Therefore, new and innovative extension interventions are suggested in the paper to influence other sub-dimensions like economic empowerment, confidence building and decision making pattern

    Mineral oil-based cutting fluids are hazardous and non-biodegradable, and their widespread usage has had a terrible effect on the environment and living things. The creation of a novel, ecologically sustainable cutting fluid technology is essential to avoid the above crisis. Commercial mineral oil alternatives are considered to possess identical lubricating properties as vegetable oils. Most vegetable oils are edible, so waste-cooking sunflower oil (WSO) is selected from this group to serve as the base stock for the green cutting fluid. The green cutting fluid is created using silicon dioxide nanoparticles as an additive and food-grade emulsifiers like Tween 80 and Span 80. According to the experimental findings, 0.05 weight percent silicon dioxide nanoparticles in the green cutting fluid performed better on a pin-on-disc tribometer

    In the title compound, C11H9ClN4OS2, the thia­diazole and chloro­phenyl rings are oriented at an angle of 43.1 (1)°. The sum of the bond angles around the amide N atom (359.8°) of the acetohydrazide group is in accordance with a model of sp2 hybridization. In the crystal, inversion dimers linked by pairs of N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds generate R 2 2(8) loops. Weak C—H⋯π inter­actions also occur

    Studies on interaction of nematode, Pratylenchus delattrei and fungal pathogen, Fusarium incarnatum associated with crossandra wilt in Tamil Nadu, India

    ABSTRACT Investigations were under taken in pot culture experiment to assess a possible interaction between fungal pathogen of crossandra, Fusarium incarnatum and lesion nematode Pratylenchus delattrei, at various population density combinations, time of inoculation and their effect on plant growth and wilt incidence of crossandra. Among varies pathogen and nematode population densities tested, the inoculation of pathogen load @3% w/v and nematode @ 1/g soil resulted in maximum reduction of plant growth parameters viz., shoot length (49.8%), shoot dry weight (52.6%), root length (47.0%), root dry weight (47.4%), and flower yield (82.6%). More over maximum root lesion index of 3.9/1-5 scale, wilt disease incidence of (50%) and nematode population up to 365 per 200 cc soil, were also recorded. Other experimental results revealed that the treatment involving inoculation of nematode prior to fungal pathogen recorded more disease incidence (58.3%), nematode (381/200cc) and pathogen (12.1×10 3 ), populations and there was significant reduction in root length, root weight, shoot height and shoot weight when compared with inoculation of pathogen and nematode simultaneously or inoculation of pathogen prior to nematode

    Fisherwomen contribute significantly to fisheries growth in Kerala. To enhance the participation of women in agriculture and allied fields, Government of India has implemented several developmental programmes.The Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) is implemented in Kerala to assist poor families (Swarozgaries) living below the poverty line by ensuring appreciable sustained income through micro enterprises. The present study was conducted in 7 Panchayats in the Ernakulam district of Kerala. Majority (88%) started the new micro enterprise in 2008 and 12 per cent in 2010. About 60 per cent of the group seek technical advice on financial transactions from the funding agency/ Micro Financial Institutes (MFIs) and 40 per cent groups take own decisions. All the groups conduct meetings either weekly or monthly for discussing their records on the sales. Decision making in the group is by all the members. The study includes detailed findings about the economic performance of the group, group profile and constraints faced by the group
