Estimation of energy and material use of sintering-based construction for a lunar outpost - with the example of SinterHab module design
In this paper, we would revisit the usability of microwave for lunar regolith sintering through an in-depth experiment, and examine the minimum materials and energy required for sintering based on the SinterHab design. This will include the minimum layers to print, estimated printing time, minimum energy required for the sintering process and the potential energy sources
Trading Determinism for Time in Space Bounded Computations
Savitch showed in that nondeterministic logspace (NL) is contained in
deterministic space but his algorithm requires
quasipolynomial time. The question whether we can have a deterministic
algorithm for every problem in NL that requires polylogarithmic space and
simultaneously runs in polynomial time was left open.
In this paper we give a partial solution to this problem and show that for
every language in NL there exists an unambiguous nondeterministic algorithm
that requires space and simultaneously runs in
polynomial time.Comment: Accepted in MFCS 201
A study of the personal income distribution in Australia
We analyze the data on personal income distribution from the Australian
Bureau of Statistics. We compare fits of the data to the exponential,
log-normal, and gamma distributions. The exponential function gives a good
(albeit not perfect) description of 98% of the population in the lower part of
the distribution. The log-normal and gamma functions do not improve the fit
significantly, despite having more parameters, and mimic the exponential
function. We find that the probability density at zero income is not zero,
which contradicts the log-normal and gamma distributions, but is consistent
with the exponential one. The high-resolution histogram of the probability
density shows a very sharp and narrow peak at low incomes, which we interpret
as the result of a government policy on income redistribution.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, Proceedings of the Econophysics Colloquium,

Machine Learning Chemical Guidelines for Engineering Electronic Structures in Half-Heusler Thermoelectric Materials.
Half-Heusler materials are strong candidates for thermoelectric applications due to their high weighted mobilities and power factors, which is known to be correlated to valley degeneracy in the electronic band structure. However, there are over 50 known semiconducting half-Heusler phases, and it is not clear how the chemical composition affects the electronic structure. While all the n-type electronic structures have their conduction band minimum at either the Γ- or X-point, there is more diversity in the p-type electronic structures, and the valence band maximum can be at either the Γ-, L-, or W-point. Here, we use high throughput computation and machine learning to compare the valence bands of known half-Heusler compounds and discover new chemical guidelines for promoting the highly degenerate W-point to the valence band maximum. We do this by constructing an "orbital phase diagram" to cluster the variety of electronic structures expressed by these phases into groups, based on the atomic orbitals that contribute most to their valence bands. Then, with the aid of machine learning, we develop new chemical rules that predict the location of the valence band maximum in each of the phases. These rules can be used to engineer band structures with band convergence and high valley degeneracy
Spatially resolved characterization of InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot structures by scanning spreading resistance microscopy
Cross-sectional scanning spreading resistance microscopy (SSRM) is used to investigate stacked InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot(QD)structures with different doping schemes. Spatially resolved imaging of the QDs by SSRM is demonstrated. The SSRM contrast obtained for the QD layers is found to depend on doping in the structure. In the undoped structures both QD-layers and QDs within the layers could be resolved, while in the dopedstructures the QD layers appear more or less uniformly broadened. The origin of the SSRM contrast in the QD layer in the different samples is discussed and correlated with doping schemes.T. Hakkarainen, O. Douhéret, and S. Anand would like
