    Forced Convection in Channels with Viscous Dissipation

    Due to the reducing size of electronic equipments; the heat fluxes in them are increasing rapidly. As a result of the increased heat fluxes thermal management becomes indispensible for its longevity and hence it is one of the important topics of current research. The dissipation of heat is necessary for its proper function. The heat is generated by the resistance encountered by electric current. Unless proper cooling arrangement is designed, the operating temperature exceeds permissible limit. As a consequence, chances of failure get increased hazards. Different phenomena have been observed in various works indicating that the mechanisms of flow and heat transfer in microchannels are still not understood clearly. There is little experimental data and theoretical analysis in the literature to elucidate the mechanisms. It is reasonable to assume that, as the dimensions of flow channels approach the micro-level, viscous dissipation could be too significant to be neglected due to a high velocity gradient in the channel. Thus, deviations from predictions using conventional theory that neglects viscous dissipation could be expected

    Multi-objective optimization of an industrial styrene reactor using Harmony Search Algorithm

    Multi-objective optimization of industrial styrene reactor is done using Harmony Search algorithm. Harmony search algorithm is a recently developed meta-heuristic algorithm which is inspired by musical improvisation process aimed towards obtaining the best harmony. Three objective functions – productivity, selectivity and yield are optimized to get best combination of decision variables for styrene reactor. All possible cases of single and multi-objective optimization have been considered. Pareto optimal sets are obtained as a result of the optimization study. Results reveal that optimized solution using harmony search algorithm gives better operating conditions than industrial practice

    Treatment satisfaction and safety of sitagliptin versus pioglitazone in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus inadequately controlled on metformin monotherapy

    Background: This study was designed to assess the treatment satisfaction between Sitagliptin versus Pioglitazone added to Metformin in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).Methods: We conducted a prospective, open label, randomized, parallel group study in SIMS, Hapur, U.P. Eligible patients fulfilling inclusion criteria were randomized into two groups having 25 patients in each group using tab Sitagliptin 100mg,tab Pioglitazone 30mg added to ongoing tab Metformin (500mg) therapy for 16 weeks. The follow-up visits were on weeks 4, 12 and 16.Results: 16 weeks later, addition of Sitagliptin 100mg compared to that of Pioglitazone 30mg to ongoing Metformin therapy provided similar glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) lowering efficacy in patients with T2DM with inadequate glycemic control on metformin monotherapy. Change in HbA1c in group1 was -0.656±0.21% (p<0.0001) whereas in group 2 was -0.748±0.35% (p<0.0001). Hence decrease in HbA1c from baseline was more in group2.Both treatments were well tolerated with negligible risk of hypoglycaemia. Weight loss was observed with Sitagliptin in contrast to weight gain seen in Pioglitazone.Conclusions: In this study, Sitagliptin 100 mg along with metformin therapy in comparison to pioglitazone 30 mg plus metformin therapy was effective, well-tolerated and improved glycemic control in both the groups. Addition of pioglitazone had cause oedema and weight gain to the patients whereas sitagliptin caused weight loss in its patients

    Analysis of Convection-Diffusion Problems at Various Peclet Numbers Using Finite Volume and Finite Difference Schemes

    Convection-diffusion problems arise frequently in many areas of applied sciences and engineering. In this paper, we solve a convection-diffusion problem by central differencing scheme, upwinding differencing scheme (which are special cases of finite volume scheme) and finite difference scheme at various Peclet numbers. It is observed that when central differencing scheme is applied, the solution changes rapidly at high Peclet number because when velocity is large, the flow term becomes large, and the convection term dominates. Similarly, when velocity is low, the diffusion term dominates and the solution diverges, i.e., mathematically the system does not satisfy the criteria of consistency. On applying upwinding differencing scheme, we conclude that the criteria of consistency is satisfied because in this scheme the flow direction is also considered. To support our study, a test example is taken and comparison of the numerical solutions with the analytical solutions is done. Keywords: Finite volume method, Partial differential equation

    Cubic B-spline collocation method for coupled system of ordinary differential equations with various boundary conditions

    This paper is concerned with collocation approach using cubic B-spline to solve coupled system of boundary value problems with various boundary conditions. The collocation equations are methodically derived using cubic B splines, for problems with Dirichlet data and an iterative method with assured convergence is described to solve the resulting system of algebraic equations. Problems with Cauchy or mixed boundary condition have been converted into series of Dirichlet problems using the bisection method. Nonlinear problem is linearized using quasilinearization to be handled by our method. Fourth order equation is converted into a coupled second order equations and solved by the proposed method .     Effect of heavy metal, copper sulphate and potassium chromate on behaviour of “Tailless water flea” Simocephalus vetulus (Crustacea - Cladocera)

    Water fleas constitute major zooplankton population of fresh water aquatic ecosystem. Their population density is an indicative of well-being of aquatic bodies. Simocephalus vetulus (Crustacea - Cladocera) is a tailless water flea and is well suited lab model for environmental monitoring. Copper a Gray listed heavy metals despite being an essential micronutrient, becomes highly toxic when present in excess quantity in aquatic ecosystem thereby causing deleterious effects on aquatic flora as well as fauna. The water-flea exposed to acute 0.37 mg/l (96hr LC50), sub-acute 0.0925 mg/l (25% of 96hr LC50) value and chronic 0.037 mg/l (10% of 96hr LC50) value of copper sulphate and acute 0.16 mg/l (96 hr LC50), sub-acute 0.04 mg/l (25% of 96 hr LC50) value and chronic 0.016 mg/l (10% of 96 hr LC50) value of potassium chromate showed behavioural alterations like initial hyperactivity, fast appendage movements and in phototaxis, geotaxis and avoidance indices. At later stage erratic swimming and spinning, reduced activity, loss of balance, reduced feeding and darkening of cuticular coloration, reduced phototactic, geotaxis and avoidance indices were the major effects on its behaviour. The behavioural alterations of S. vetulus showed the most susceptible and foremost indication of potential toxic effects.
