Thickness dependence of microstructures in La0.8Ca0.2MnO3 thin films
The thickness dependence of microstructures of La0.8Ca0.2MnO3 (LCMO)/SrTiO3 (STO) thin films was investigated by high-resolution x-ray diffraction, small angle x-ray reflection, grazing incidence x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The results show that all the LCMO films are well oriented in (00l) direction perpendicular to the substrate surface. Self-organized crystalline grains with a tetragonal shape are uniformly distributed on the film surface, indicating the deposition condition being of benefit to the formation of the crystalline grains. With increasing the film thickness, the crystalline quality of the LCMO film is improved, while the surface becomes rougher. There exists a nondesigned cap layer on the upper surface of the LCMO layer for all the samples. The mechanism is discussed briefly.published_or_final_versio
Ultra-strong Adhesion of Graphene Membranes
As mechanical structures enter the nanoscale regime, the influence of van der
Waals forces increases. Graphene is attractive for nanomechanical systems
because its Young's modulus and strength are both intrinsically high, but the
mechanical behavior of graphene is also strongly influenced by the van der
Waals force. For example, this force clamps graphene samples to substrates, and
also holds together the individual graphene sheets in multilayer samples. Here
we use a pressurized blister test to directly measure the adhesion energy of
graphene sheets with a silicon oxide substrate. We find an adhesion energy of
0.45 \pm 0.02 J/m2 for monolayer graphene and 0.31 \pm 0.03 J/m2 for samples
containing 2-5 graphene sheets. These values are larger than the adhesion
energies measured in typical micromechanical structures and are comparable to
solid/liquid adhesion energies. We attribute this to the extreme flexibility of
graphene, which allows it to conform to the topography of even the smoothest
substrates, thus making its interaction with the substrate more liquid-like
than solid-like.Comment: to appear in Nature Nanotechnolog
Effect of Peierls transition in armchair carbon nanotube on dynamical behaviour of encapsulated fullerene
The changes of dynamical behaviour of a single fullerene molecule inside an
armchair carbon nanotube caused by the structural Peierls transition in the
nanotube are considered. The structures of the smallest C20 and Fe@C20
fullerenes are computed using the spin-polarized density functional theory.
Significant changes of the barriers for motion along the nanotube axis and
rotation of these fullerenes inside the (8,8) nanotube are found at the Peierls
transition. It is shown that the coefficients of translational and rotational
diffusions of these fullerenes inside the nanotube change by several orders of
magnitude. The possibility of inverse orientational melting, i.e. with a
decrease of temperature, for the systems under consideration is predicted.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl

Improved Constraints on Sterile Neutrino Mixing from Disappearance Searches in the MINOS, MINOS+, Daya Bay, and Bugey-3 Experiments.
Searches for electron antineutrino, muon neutrino, and muon antineutrino disappearance driven by sterile neutrino mixing have been carried out by the Daya Bay and MINOS+ collaborations. This Letter presents the combined results of these searches, along with exclusion results from the Bugey-3 reactor experiment, framed in a minimally extended four-neutrino scenario. Significantly improved constraints on the θ_{μe} mixing angle are derived that constitute the most constraining limits to date over five orders of magnitude in the mass-squared splitting Δm_{41}^{2}, excluding the 90% C.L. sterile-neutrino parameter space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE observations at 90% CL_{s} for Δm_{41}^{2}<13 eV^{2}. Furthermore, the LSND and MiniBooNE 99% C.L. allowed regions are excluded at 99% CL_{s} for Δm_{41}^{2}<1.6 eV^{2}

Structure of hadron resonances with a nearby zero of the amplitude
We discuss the relation between the analytic structure of the scattering
amplitude and the origin of an eigenstate represented by a pole of the
amplitude. If the eigenstate is not dynamically generated by the interaction in
the channel of interest, the residue of the pole vanishes in the zero coupling
limit. Based on the topological nature of the phase of the scattering
amplitude, we show that the pole must encounter with the
Castillejo-Dalitz-Dyson (CDD) zero in this limit. It is concluded that the
dynamical component of the eigenstate is small if a CDD zero exists near the
eigenstate pole. We show that the line shape of the resonance is distorted from
the Breit-Wigner form as an observable consequence of the nearby CDD zero.
Finally, studying the positions of poles and CDD zeros of the KbarN-piSigma
amplitude, we discuss the origin of the eigenstates in the Lambda(1405) region.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, v2: published versio
Rectifying the output of vibrational piezoelectric energy harvester using quantum dots
Piezoelectric energy harvester scavenges mechanical vibrations and generates electricity. Researchers have strived to optimize the electromechanical structures and to design necessary external power management circuits, aiming to deliver high power and rectified outputs ready for serving as batteries. Complex deformation of the mechanical structure results in charges with opposite polarities appearing on same surface, leading to current loss in the attached metal electrode. External power management circuits such as rectifiers comprise diodes that consume power and have undesirable forward bias. To address the above issues, we devise a novel integrated piezoelectric energy harvesting device that is structured by stacking a layer of quantum dots (QDs) and a layer of piezoelectric material. We find that the QD can rectify electrical charges generated from the piezoelectric material because of its adaptable conductance to the electrochemical potentials of both sides of the QDs layer, so that electrical current causing energy loss on the same surface of the piezoelectric material can be minimized. The QDs layer has the potential to replace external rectification circuits providing a much more compact and less power-consumption solution
Expression of NADPH Oxidase (NOX) 5 in Rabbit Corneal Stromal Cells
To determine whether NOX 5 is expressed in rabbit corneal stromal cells (RCSC). NADPH oxidases (NOXes) are enzymes that preferentially use NADPH as a substrate and generate superoxide. Several isoforms of NOXes function as multi-protein complexes while NOX5 and DUOXs do not require the accessory proteins for their activity and possess calcium binding EF hands.Human NOX5 primers were used to amplify the rabbit NOX5 by RT-PCR. Amplified product was sequenced to confirm its identity. The protein encoded by the NOX5 was identified by western blot analysis. NOX5 siRNA was used to reduce transcript, protein, and calcium stimulated activity. In silico analyses were performed to establish the putative structure, functions, and evolution of rabbit NOX5.NOX activity was measured in RCSC with NADPH rather than NADH as a substrate. RT-PCR with NOX5 primers amplified 288 bp product using RCSC cDNA, which, when sequenced, confirmed its identity to human NOX5 mRNA. This sequence was used to predict the rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) NOX5 gene. NOX5 siRNA reduced amounts of NOX5 mRNA in RCSC and reduced ionomycin stimulated superoxide production. A protein of about 65 to 70 kDa encoded by the NOX5 was detected by western blot analysis. In silico analysis predicted a putative rabbit NOX5 protein containing 801 amino acids. Motif searches predicted the presence of at least 3 putative EF-hands in N-terminus and a NOX domain in C terminal region. The data document that the NOX5 gene was expressed in cells of lagomorphs unlike rodents, making the rabbit an interesting model to study NOX5 functions. The activity of the rabbit NOX5 was calcium stimulated, a trait of NOX5 in general. NOX5 may also prove to be a useful genetic marker for studying the taxonomic position of lagomorphs and the Glires classification
Observation of a ppb mass threshoud enhancement in \psi^\prime\to\pi^+\pi^-J/\psi(J/\psi\to\gamma p\bar{p}) decay
The decay channel
is studied using a sample of events collected
by the BESIII experiment at BEPCII. A strong enhancement at threshold is
observed in the invariant mass spectrum. The enhancement can be fit
with an -wave Breit-Wigner resonance function with a resulting peak mass of
and a
narrow width that is at the 90% confidence level.
These results are consistent with published BESII results. These mass and width
values do not match with those of any known meson resonance.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Chinese Physics
