    Fabrication and test of a space power boiler feed electromagnetic pump. 3: Endurance and final performance tests

    A three-phase helical induction electromagnetic pump designed for the boiler feed pump of a potassium Rankine cycle space power system was developed and built. It was mounted in a liquid metal test loop and successfully tested over a range of potassium temperatures from 900 to 1400 F, flow rates from 0.75 to 4.85 lb/sec, developed pressures up to 340 psi, net positive suction head from 1 to 22 psi, and NaK coolant temperatures from 800 to 950 F. Maximum efficiency at design point conditions of 3.25 lb/sec flow rate, 240 psi developed head, 1000 F potassium inlet temperature, and 800 F NaK coolant inlet temperature was 16.3 percent. After the performance tests the pump was operated without any difficulty at design point for 10,000 hours, and then a limited number of repeat performance tests were made. There was no appreciable change in pump performance after 10,000 hours of operation. A supplementary series of tests using the quasi-square wave power output of a dc to three-phase ac inverter showed that the pump would operate without difficulty at a frequency as low as 25 Hz, with little loss in efficiency

    Clonal mixing in the soldier-producing aphid <i>Pemphigus spyrothecae</i> (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

    Illuminating the genetic relationships within soldier-producing aphid colonies is an essential element of any attempt to explain the evolution of the altruistic soldier caste. Pemphigus spyrothecae is a soldier-producing aphid that induces galls on the leaf petioles of its host (trees of the genus Populus). At least a quarter of the aphids within the clonally produced gall population are morphologically and behaviourally distinct first-instar soldiers that defend the gall population from predation. Using field trapping and microsatellites, we investigated the degree of clonal mixing within natural gall populations. Field trapping in the UK showed that all the migrants of P. spyrothecae and of two other Pemphigus species were wingless first-instar soldiers. The average degree of mixing estimated from trapping P. spyrothecae migrants was 0.68% (range = 0–15%). Microsatellite genotyping of 277 aphids from 13 galls collected in Italy revealed an average mixing level of 10.4% (range = 0–59%). Six galls contained more than one clone (range = 2–5 clones). Non-kin aphids were not restricted to the soldier caste but were evenly distributed across instars. An additional gall, from which 527 occupants were genotyped, contained 12 non-kin aphids distributed among nine clones, showing that clonal diversity can be high even when mixing is very low. These observations suggest that although soldiers migrate regularly and can moult and reproduce within foreign galls, clonal mixing in this species is generally low and is unlikely to provide a barrier to the evolution of investment by the aphid clones in an altruistic soldier caste

    Neutron transition strengths of 21+2^+_1 states in the neutron rich Oxygen isotopes determined from inelastic proton scattering

    A coupled-channel analysis of the 18,20,22^{18,20,22}O(p,p′)(p,p') data has been performed to determine the neutron transition strengths of 21+^+_1 states in Oxygen targets, using the microscopic optical potential and inelastic form factor calculated in the folding model. A complex density- and \emph{isospin} dependent version of the CDM3Y6 interaction was constructed, based on the Brueckner-Hatree-Fock calculation of nuclear matter, for the folding model input. Given an accurate isovector density dependence of the CDM3Y6 interaction, the isoscalar (δ0\delta_0) and isovector (δ1\delta_1) deformation lengths of 21+^+_1 states in 18,20,22^{18,20,22}O have been extracted from the folding model analysis of the (p,p′)(p,p') data. A specific NN-dependence of δ0\delta_0 and δ1\delta_1 has been established which can be linked to the neutron shell closure occurring at NN approaching 16. The strongest isovector deformation was found for 21+^+_1 state in 20^{20}O, with δ1\delta_1 about 2.5 times larger than δ0\delta_0, which indicates a strong core polarization by the valence neutrons in 20^{20}O. The ratios of the neutron/proton transition matrix elements (Mn/MpM_n/M_p) determined for 21+^+_1 states in 18,20^{18,20}O have been compared to those deduced from the mirror symmetry, using the measured B(E2)B(E2) values of 21+^+_1 states in the proton rich 18^{18}Ne and 20^{20}Mg nuclei, to discuss the isospin impurity in the 21+2^+_1 excitation of the A=18,T=1A=18,T=1 and A=20,T=2A=20,T=2 isobars.Comment: Version accepted for publication in Physical Review

    High Energy Hadron-Nucleus Cross Sections and Their Extrapolation to Cosmic Ray Energies

    Old models of the scattering of composite systems based on the Glauber model of multiple diffraction are applied to hadron-nucleus scattering. We obtain an excellent fit with only two free parameters to the highest energy hadron-nucleus data available. Because of the quality of the fit and the simplicity of the model it is argued that it should continue to be reliable up to the highest cosmic ray energies. Logarithmic extrapolations of proton-proton and proton-antiproton data are used to calculate the proton-air cross sections at very high energy. Finally, it is observed that if the exponential behavior of the proton-antiproton diffraction peak continues into the few TeV energy range it will violate partial wave unitarity.     Time Resolution and Linearity Measurements for a Scintillating Fiber Detector Instrumented with VLPC's

    The time resolution for a charged particle detection is reported for a typical scintillating fiber detector instrumented with Rockwell HISTE-IV Visible Light Photon Counters. The resolution measurements are shown to agree with a simple Monte Carlo model, and the model is used to make recomendations for improved performance. In addition, the gain linearity of a sample of VLPC devices was measured.
