Crafting A Human Resource Strategy To Foster Organizational Agility: A Case Study

A decade ago, the CEO of Albert Einstein Healthcare Network (AEHN), anticipating a tumultuous and largely unpredictable period in its industry, undertook to convert this organization from one that was basically stable and complacent to one that was agile, “nimble, and change-hardy”. This case study briefly addresses AEHN’s approaches to business strategy and organization design, but focuses primarily on the human resource strategy that emerged over time to foster the successful attainment of organizational agility. Although exploratory, the study suggests a number of lessons for those who are, or will be, studying or trying to create and sustain this promising new organizational paradigm

Inter-agency Cooperation and Good Tax Governance in Africa

In 2015, the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) and the African Tax Institute at the University of Pretoria launched a project to identify the links between corruption, money laundering and tax crimes in Africa. The project promotes the concepts of good tax governance and the importance to economic development of a tax system that is transparent and free of corruption. The project explores how law enforcement agencies and tax authorities can best cooperate to counter corruption and bribery. The project was initially aimed at three focus countries, namely, Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa, but soon was extended to other African countries. This is a joint initiative with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and is also supported by the World Bank. This book brings together a series of background papers prepared for the Conference on Inter-Agency Co-operation and Good Tax Governance in Africa held at the University of Pretoria in July 2016. After a rigorous double peer-review process, the papers were revised by the authors. Reliable density functional and G_0 W_0 approaches to the calculation of bandgaps in 2D materials

Optimizing density-functional theory (DFT) and G0W0 calculations present coupled problems as orbitals from DFT are needed as G0W0 starting points. Applied to 341 two-dimensional (2D) materials, we demonstrate that CAM-B3LYP provides minimal changes in bandgap (e.g., mean absolute deviation of 0.23 eV) when used to start G0W0 calculations, compared to traditional functionals such as PBE, PBE0, and HSE06 (1.07 eV, 1.48 eV, and 1.51 eV, respectively). CAM-B3LYP also delivers the smallest changes in orbital representation. These and other results indicate the suitability of CAM-B3LYP as a density-functional approach for modelling 2D materials, as well as for use in optimizing G0W0 calculations. Our findings parallel well established features of applications to molecules, as well as for spectroscopic applications involving 3D materials

Tobacco Control and Health Advocacy in the European Union:Understanding Effective Coalition-Building

Introduction: Coalitions of supporters of comprehensive tobacco control policy have been crucial in achieving policy success nationally and internationally, but the dynamics of such alliances are not well understood. Methods: Qualitative semi-structured, narrative interviews with 35 stakeholders involved in developing the European Council Recommendation on smoke-free environments. These were thematically analyzed to examine the dynamics of coalition-building, collaboration and leadership in the alliance of organizations which successfully called for the development of comprehensive European Union (EU) smoke-free policy. Results: An alliance of tobacco control and public health advocacy organizations, scientific institutions, professional bodies, pharmaceutical companies, and other actors shared the goal of fighting the harms caused by second-hand smoke. Alliance members jointly called for comprehensive EU smoke-free policy and the protection of the political debates from tobacco industry interference. The alliance’s success was enabled by a core group of national and European actors with long-standing experience in tobacco control, who facilitated consensus-building, mobilized allies and synchronized the actions of policy supporters. Representatives of Brussels-based organizations emerged as crucial strategic leaders. Conclusions: The insights gained and identification of key enablers of successful tobacco control advocacy highlight the strategic importance of investing into tobacco control at European level. Those interested in effective health policy can apply lessons learned from EU smoke-free policy to build effective alliances in tobacco control and other areas of public health

Genetic variants in ELOVL2 and HSD17B12 predict melanoma‐specific survival

Fatty acids play a key role in cellular bioenergetics, membrane biosynthesis and intracellular signaling processes and thus may be involved in cancer development and progression. In the present study, we comprehensively assessed associations of 14,522 common single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 149 genes of the fatty‐acid synthesis pathway with cutaneous melanoma disease‐specific survival (CMSS). The dataset of 858 cutaneous melanoma (CM) patients from a published genome‐wide association study (GWAS) by The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center was used as the discovery dataset, and the identified significant SNPs were validated by a dataset of 409 CM patients from another GWAS from the Nurses’ Health and Health Professionals Follow‐up Studies. We found 40 noteworthy SNPs to be associated with CMSS in both discovery and validation datasets after multiple comparison correction by the false positive report probability method, because more than 85% of the SNPs were imputed. By performing functional prediction, linkage disequilibrium analysis, and stepwise Cox regression selection, we identified two independent SNPs of ELOVL2 rs3734398 T>C and HSD17B12 rs11037684 A>G that predicted CMSS, with an allelic hazards ratio of 0.66 (95% confidence interval = 0.51–0.84 and p = 8.34 × 10−4) and 2.29 (1.55–3.39 and p = 3.61 × 10−5), respectively. Finally, the ELOVL2 rs3734398 variant CC genotype was found to be associated with a significantly increased mRNA expression level. These SNPs may be potential markers for CM prognosis, if validated by additional larger and mechanistic studies

The increasing of chicken meat consumption will increase the number of Chicken Slaughter House(RPA). RPA is a special place to process the meat. However, However, it causes the increasing number of waste from unprocessed meat that may damage the environment. Whereas, the waste from RPA contains a huge amount of protein that can support entog\u27s (Cairinamoschata) growth and development. Entog is well known with its immunity against virus and bacteria. According to PKHDG(2011), demand for ducken meat, including entog, reaching 33,000 tons annually. Entog market price is also quite high. Lowest price per head reached Rp. 25.0600. Higher market entog males aged two months, around Rp. 50,000 per head. Entog was marketed in size from 2.6 to 3 kg for males, while females weighing 1.5 to 1.9kg. Utilization of waste as a source of live stock feed RPA is considered very advantageous, because the feed is readily available, abundant, cheap, highly nutria thousand not lead to residues in meat. The result is that we have sold 200 entogs (period I) and 110 entogs in period II with the total yield Rp.8.910.000 and the total profit Rp.2.400.000
