    An anatomico-surgical study of the temporal branch of the facial nerve.

    The surgical anatomy of the temporal branch of the facial nerve was studied bilaterally in 10 embalmed cadaveric heads. Particular attention was paid to the relationships between the temporal branch, the galeal-fascial layers, and the fat pads of the temporal-zygomatic region. The temporal branch of the facial nerve pierces the parotidomasseteric fascia below the zygomatic arch. This branch travels first in the subcutaneous tissue and then, above the zygomatic arch, in the subgaleal space. The temporal branch divides into an anterior, a middle (frontal), and a posterior ramus soon after it pierces the parotid fascia. The course of the terminal twigs of the temporal branch of the facial nerve in the subgaleal space is extremely variable, with their location being at times posterior to the anterior one-fourth of the temporalis muscle. Occasionally, a twig for the frontalis muscle may run in between the two layers of the superficial temporal fascia. Because of these findings (anteroposterior variability of temporal branch twigs and recurrent intrafascial twig), Yasargil's interfascial dissection may at times fail. A combined frontotemporal scalp/superficial temporal fascia dissection is anatomically suited to preserve the temporal branch of the facial nerve

    Six simple guidelines for introducing new genera of fungi

    We formulate five guidelines for introducing new genera, plus one recommendation how to publish the results of scientific research. We recommend that reviewers and editors adhere to these guidelines. We propose that the underlying research is solid, and that the results and the final solutions are properly discussed. The six criteria are: (1) all genera that are recognized should be monophyletic; (2) the coverage of the phylogenetic tree should be wide in number of species, geographic coverage, and type species of the genera under study; (3) the branching of the phylogenetic trees has to have sufficient statistical support; (4) different options for the translation of the phylogenetic tree into a formal classification should be discussed and the final decision justified; (5) the phylogenetic evidence should be based on more than one gene; and (6) all supporting evidence and background information should be included in the publication in which the new taxa are proposed, and this publication should be peer-reviewed

    Left ventricular (LV) pacing in newborns and infants. Echo assessment of LV systolic function and synchrony at 5-year follow-up

    Background: Small retrospective studies reported that left ventricular (LV) pacing is likely to preserve LV function in children with isolated congenital complete atrioventricular block (CCAVB). The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate LV contractility and synchrony in a cohort of neonates/infants at pacemaker implantation and follow-up. Methods: Patients with CCAVB who underwent LV pacing were evaluated with electrocardiogram and echocardiogram in a single-center, prospective study. Data were collected at implantation, at 1-month and every year of follow-up, up to 5 years. LV ventricular dimensions (diameters and volumes), systolic function (ejection fraction [EF] and global longitudinal strain [GLS]), and synchrony were evaluated. Data are reported as median (25th-75th centiles). Results: Twenty consecutive patients with CCAVB underwent pacemaker implantation (12 single-chamber pacemaker [VVIR] and eight dual-chamber pacemaker [DDD]) with epicardial leads: 17 on the LV apex and three on the free wall. Age at implantation was 0.3 months (1 day-4.5 months). Patients showed good clinical status, normal LV dimensions, preserved systolic function, and synchrony at 60 (30-60) months follow-up. EF increased to normal values in patients with preimplantation EF <50%. Presence of antibodies and pacing mode (DDD vs VVIR) had no impact on the outcome. Conclusions: LV pacing preserved LV systolic function and synchrony in neonates and infants with CCAVB at 5-year follow-up. LV EF improved in patients with low preimplantation EF. Pacing mode or the presence of autoantibodies did not demonstrated an impact on LV contractility and synchrony

    Sismicidad de la Precordillera Sanjuanina entre 29ºS y 32ºS: análisis de fuente sísmica y del campo de esfuerzos

    En el presente estudio se analiza la sismicidad cortical (< 65 km) registrada en la Precordillera Sanjuanina durante 2008 y 2009 por 52 estaciones sismológicas temporales de banda ancha distribuidas en Cordillera, Precordillera, Sierras Pampeanas Orientales y Occidentales. Para este sector del retroarco andino se localizaron un total de 100 sismos corticales con profundidades focales < 65 km y sus correspondientes mecanismos focales. Los sismos localizados en Precordillera presentan magnitudes 0,4<ML<5,3 y 1,3<MW<5,3. El estudio de localización sísmica utilizando un modelo de velocidades mejorado permitió obtener profundidades focales comprendidades entre 5 km y 46 km de profundidad. El análisis de mecanismos focales utilizando primeros arribos indica mayor proporción de soluciones de fallamiento inverso o inverso con pequeña componente de rumbo y en menor abundancia mecanismos normales o conteniendo alguna componente de rumbo. El campo de esfuerzos obtenido sobre 100 sismos corticales claramente indica una componente del eje mayor compresivo orientado en dirección este-oeste. Estos resultados son consistentes con la tectónica compresiva de la Precordillera para niveles de corteza media a superior.Eje: Estudio del Interior Terrestre.Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísica

    Type studies and fourteen new North American species of Cortinarius section Anomali reveal high continental species diversity

    Section is a species-rich group in North America belonging to , the most diverse genus in the Agaricales. This study is based on extensive morphological investigations and molecular methods using 191 nrDNA ITS sequence data and recovered 43 phylogenetic species from which 14 are described here as new to science. We sequenced ten type materials which belonged to eight species. The synonymy of with and with is proposed here. The North American occurrence of four species ( , , , and ), so far known only from Europe, was confirmed. Thirteen species were not formally described here due to lack of relevant information. An identification key to the known species in North America is provided
