Note Concerning the Distribution Function of the Total Loss Excluding the Largest Individual Claims

The theory of extreme values is a special branch of mathematical statistics and was mainly treated by E. J. Gumbel [4]). This theory has only been applied in a few cases to problems in the insurance business. The first practical application to insurance known to the author of the present paper is due to A. Thépaut who has invented a new reinsurance system called ECOMOR [5]. According to this system the reinsurer covers the excess risk for the m largest claims and the ceding company retains an amount equal to the (m + I) largest claim. The credit for having pointed out the importance of the theory of extreme values belongs to R. E. Beard [1]. Recently E. Franckx [3] has found a most remarkable result by disclosing the general form of the distribution for the largest claim occurring in a certain accounting period. The present paper starts from the consideration that not only is the distribution of major claims, which might be eliminated by means of reinsurance, of interest to an insurer but also the distribution of the remaining total loss after excluding the largest claims. The nature of this distribution is important not only in connection with stability and security, but also for statistical investigations of the observed claim ratio. The credibility of such an investigation might be greatly improved if a suitable number of major claims were excluded. To simplify matters, the present paper considers the case where only the largest claim is exclude

An Exploratory Study of Factors Influencing the Level of Vitality and Popularity of Open Source Projects

In this research, we ask the question: What differentiates successful from unsuccessful open source software projects? Using a sample of 240 open source projects, we examine how organizational sponsorship, target audience (developer versus end user), license choice, and development status interact over time to influence the extent to which open source software projects attract user attention and developer activity

Under-Subjective Knowledge, Compatibility, and the Impact on Adoption and Implementation of Technology

The purpose of the current study is to explore the impact of compatibility on the relationship between undersubjectiveknowledge, a concept we develop here in the context of technology adopt and implementation research, and technology adoption and implementation. To do so, we develop two versions of mobile systems for a controlledexperiment: 1) high compatible system and 2) low compatible system. The experiments are designed to test twohypotheses. Based on our hypotheses, we predict that compatibility may trigger a transformation from undersubjectiveknowledge to a condition of objective knowledge (and possibly, and less ideally, to a condition of oversubjectiveknowledge). Thus, the current study predicts that compatibility raise self-esteem or confidence andmitigates the negative effect of under-subjective knowledge on intention to adopt technology

Esports, Digital Professionals, and Higher Education: An Autoethnography of an Administrator’s Experience with Liminality

Professional identity is a means for continued livelihood and, in this digitizing world, is in constant flux. Constantly changing occupational roles and professional classes are liminal, that is, they are increasingly “betwixt and between” formerly legitimized, stable categories. If, as current writings on the future of work suggest, a need for liminality in work identities persists, how will institutions of higher education help their students acquire “permanent” liminality? Through the eyes of an administrator at a mid-sized higher education institution, we examine how a university creates a new learning environment under the umbrella of esports. The findings raise questions about digital transitions in higher education and about liminality and the future of work by highlighting esports as a liminal category. The study contributes to the literature on the future of work by offering insights into higher education challenges to “institutionalize” liminality and to prepare future digital professionals

Overview of the influenza vaccination activities and legal frameworks in 26 Swiss cantons during the influenza season 2019/20

Background In Switzerland, the implementation of national health and prevention strategies is regulated at the cantonal level. To date, no in-depth inventory outlining the cantonal health activities and legal frameworks for influenza vaccination exists. Objective To assess the activities and legal frameworks for influenza vaccination during the 2019/20 season across all 26 Swiss cantons. Method Survey using a structured closed-ended questionnaire. Results The activities’ range across the cantons is broad from 11 activities in the canton Vaud to one in cantons Grisons and Jura. French/Italian-speaking cantons conduct 1.5 times more influenza vaccination activities on average than the German-speaking cantons. 23 of 26 cantons authorize influenza vaccination by pharmacists. All cantons allow nurses to vaccinate under the responsibility of a doctor. Conclusion Influenza vaccination activities and vaccination-specific legal frameworks vary by canton and linguistic regions. Future vaccination strategies should consider concerted approaches to optimize their successful implementation

El arquetipo del héroe como base para un liderazgo transformacional el caso Malala

This work degree, studies the psych political case of Malala. Life experience and leadership of the young Nobel Peace Prize winning Pakistani, are analyzed in the framework of Jungian theory of archetypes, as contemporary incarnation of the hero archetype, and as it manifests the characteristics of transformational leadership traits particular of its kind. The life cycle of hero is also examined, as interpreted by Joseph Campbell, and the importance of this report for political psychology and contemporary humanity is that the myth of Hero (Heroine) represents the courage of those who take as their destination and sense of his life the evolutionary transformation of societies and humanity, displaying conditions of greater freedom and expansion of human rights, from the very transformation of the structure of individual personality (individuation in Jung's theory) as a factor inspiring collective transformation to varying degrees. The work is complemented by the case analysis contrasting it with some of the main features of psychologically healthy leaders, and pathological leaders, as part of the clinical-political theory of Costales.

This article presents a discussion of the importance of a course in bargaining and negotiation to university-level students in an accredited business school environment. In addition to discussing recommended content, pedagogy, and assessment methods, the results of a study that examines the impact of the course on students perceptions of skills, attitudes, and behaviors associated with effective negotiation is presented. The results of the study clearly demonstrate significant shifts in students perceptions regarding power, constructive dialogue, and the appropriate role and definition of winning in such bargaining and negotiation encounters

Apresentado em "ProjMAN 2014 - International Conference on Project MANagement, Troia, Portugal, 15-17 Oct. 2014"In today’s demanding business environment companies must perform more efficiently. One of the most important ways to tackle this challenge is to enhance the human resources potential, through effective team management. High-performing teams have been studied for some years, with literature discussing their features from several perspectives as, for instance: leadership; teams as a whole; and team members. But, little has been written on managing these teams in the construction business. Based on a project involving 44 professionals and six teams, our exploratory case study presents preliminary results on perceived importante features for managing teams into high performance. Surprisingly, in opposition to their team members, managers did not perceive as most important some of the common features identified in the literature. Plus, some differences exist between teams’ perceptions. The reported differences may be correlated with the characteristics (e.g., social and demographic) of the professionals.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
