The rise of hate narratives along with the new model of communication through the internet has become a new challenge for people in this digital era, especially for youth, the Z generation. This generation, in fact, has an intimacy with the internet. It means that they have more possibility for the influence of hate narratives. This study is aimed exploring the influential factors on Z generation reception to the hate narratives on the internet. Specifically, it proposes to recognize the influential factors on the reception of the students of Madrasah Aliyah Negri (MAN) or State Islamic Senior High School of Tuban (MAN Tuban), East Java. This work is based on two hate narrative issues of Suku, Agama, Ras dan Antargolongan (SARA) or religious, ethnic and intergroup diversity backgrounds, including those of anti-Christianity and those anti-Shiite. This work concludes that the influential factors to the students' reception toward hate narratives come from two categories. First, students are to be the audience of their social systems and backgrounds. The involvement of the students in fundamentalist Muslim groups, in fact, has led them to have exclusive views in seeing others and to feel always under intergroup contestation. Second, the role of the characters of the narratives that influence student’s thought is very important to count. It includes the legitimization through emotion which specifically presents fear and feeling threatened. Those characters have further triggered the students’ empathy to do something beneficial for the sake of the in-group (altruism). In addition, the characters of the narratives have the figures behind them that have influenced students to immediately believe in the narratives they offer only through seeing their profiles on the internet showing their expertise

Structuring public place through the design of access systems : the design of urban public place, an addition to the "New Market" of Calcutta, India

Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1995.Includes bibliographical references (leaf 88).The addition and re-design of a 19th century covered market in the heart of Calcutta, India, is the design project to explore the larger topic of place-making within a specific culture. In Calcutta the divisions of society within the city are becoming increasingly polarized along the lines of religion and wealth, creating a real need for a public place accessible to income and class groups from all over the city. The 'ground level' public spaces of colonialism-parks and gardens-have been taken over by the city's poor. The only zone of interaction for the city's varied population is the street; a few 'street-like' built spaces-covered street-edge arcades and the· 'interior streets' of the city's covered markets still function as public places, creating a civic collective realm. An analysis of these public places shows that rather than a static conception of public place as open 'plaza' or 'square' (which would most likely be built upon and privatized), the routes of access- the 'interior' streets-within these places are used as public places. At a small scale, a variety of environments are created by local intensifications of the access zones. At a larger scale, differentiation in the access (or 'interior street') network creates differential degrees of access that serve the needs of various groups still remaining public at the collective size. The thesis proposes that the static polarities of 'public' and 'private' space be replaced by looking at the continuum of differential access that creates particularity within the built environment, yet structures the experience as a whole. In Calcutta, the complex divisions within society are congruent with the need for the fine gradiations of accessibility that are seen in the built environments of its public places. It is the need for different degrees of accessibility that differentiates the design of public place in Calcutta from that in Western society. The architecture of Hermann Hertzberger and Aldo Van Eyck has done much to reformulate the idea of public place as 'interior streetscape'. To underscore the difference with the Indian context, the thesis examines the assumptions of individual and collective that are implicit in their designs. The thesis also analyzes the intricate degrees of accessibility created by the access systems of traditional Indian built environments at the collective size. Drawing from these sources, the design project focuses on the design of addition to the old covered market as public place, focussing on the design of the access system as the organizational structure of the built environment. Through the design of the built environment's access system the aim is to accommodate the often conflicting needs of groups within it as well as allow for it's collective use.by Aminuddin Ahmad.M.Arch

    Get PDF
The prevalence of smoking habits among children and adolescents has increased quantitative and qualitative, which further elevates the risk of diseases. Furthermore, the 2014 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) (data showed the intention to quit smoking by 88.2% of students, although only 24% received assistance in affiliated programs; hence support is required from the immediate environment. Therefore, the purpose of this research, was to determine the effect of counseling in the success of smoking cessation in junior high school students. The research design used was a prospective cohort. The subjects of this research include all junior high school students with the smoking habit, of which 40 participants were selected. These respondents were provided with smoking cessation counseling for six sessions (4 months). Survival analysis was used to evaluate the data collected. After the six counseling sessions, the cessation success and failure rates were 75% and 25%, respectively. Smoking cessation was related to nicotine addiction (p<0.001; Adj.HR 25.2;95% CI 4.9-129.9) and activeness in counseling (p=0.001; Adj.HR 12.8; 95% CI 2.8-57.9). This research is expected to help students with the smoking habit terminate the practice, subsequently reducing the prevalence in Poso Regency

A Delphi Study to Identify Important Factors for Determining the Level of Adherence to ISPS Code Implementation

    Get PDF
The International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code was adopted in 2004 as a preventive measure to enhance maritime security in ports and on-board ships. The regulation was made compulsory under Chapter XI-2 of the International Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention by International Maritime Organisation (IMO). Since the implementation of the ISPS Code is rather new as compared to other IMO regulations, it is deemed necessary to find out whether employees who work in ports are fully aware and adhere to the requirements of the Code. This research is therefore meant to identify the important determinants to ensure effective implementation of ISPS Code and investigate the level of adherence to ISPS Code implementation amongst Vale Malaysia Minerals (VMM) employees. In this research, the primary data is collected using the Delphi technique. This study concludes that other than those addressed in the literature, two more important factors can be used to determine the implementation of ISPS code and that VMM has been assessed as satisfactorily adhered to the general ISPS Code requirements

Research student supervision : an approach to good supervisory practice.

    Get PDF
Good supervisory practices help students fulfill their potential and contribute to the University’s research profile. At many universities, the terms of a supervisory relationship are left almost entirely to the discretion of individual research students and supervisors. While this approach usually works well, it occasionally proves unsatisfactory. A lack of clarity between student and supervisor with regard to expectations and responsibilities can adversely affect progress towards the completion of the degree. This article reviews the literature on research/graduate student supervision. It describes best practices in research student supervision, and setd out the rights and responsibilities of both students and their supervisors. It is intended to provide some useful guidelines for research students and supervisors in a critically important part of graduate education: the supervision of students’ thesis writing and research. Therefore, a review of literature concerning research student supervision is hoped to assist all participants in the supervisory process to articulate their expectations clearly, and thereby to reduce potential problems and to facilitate the creative process of thesis preparation
