    Spatial analysis of suicide attack incidences in Kabul City

    Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies.In the last two decades, suicide bombings became quite common among some communities in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, USA, and a few African and European countries. The modeling of reported suicide bombings has been the subject of a few studies, but the pattern of incidents turned out to be difficult to assess. Nevertheless, to uncover the bombing patterns in past incident locations is of major importance because it can improve social security and save human lives. The Capital city of Afghanistan, Kabul, has experienced on average around one suicide attack in every month since 2001. The overall objective of this study is to characterize the spatial and temporal patterns of suicide attacks in Kabul City. This research primarily used last 5 years descriptive spatial information on suicide attacks in Kabul that brought to public by some local and international news paper to generate geographic point data. Suicide attack location points and potential target group establishment point’s data analyzed separately to explore inherent spatial point pattern in terms of intensity and interaction. Finally it analyzed spatial tendency between suicide attack location points on target group establishment locations. It has been explored that both suicide attack locations that occurred from year 2006 to 2010 within the urban habitat of Kabul and target group’s establishment locations are characterized by inhomogeneous intensity and clustered interaction pattern at 98% level of significance. Moreover, there is a tendency of choosing location for suicide attacks close to target group’s establishment location. Finally some interesting temporal characteristics of suicide attack incidences also presented in this study

    Abstract: “Parliamentary Committee System in Bangladesh: Functional Analysis of different Parliamentary Committee.†this article examines the patterns and performance of Parliamentary Committees in Bangladesh. Committees are ubiquitous. They are found in all types of parliamentary old or new, large or small, The Jatiya Sangsad, as the parliament is called in Bangladesh, is no exception. The evidence presented in this paper clearly shows that the committees set up by recent parliaments have fared far better than their predecessors in almost every function, including scrutinizing legislation and exercising oversight over executive departments. The creation of an elaborate committee system is necessary, but is not sufficient to ensure that it will work unless some other conditions are met. Comparative experience shows that the recommendations of Parliamentary Committees are generally honored. But Bangladesh appears to be a deviant case.     Declaration Effect of Cash & Stock Dividends on Share Price: An Empirical Study on Dhaka Stock Exchange

    This study analyzes the impact of different types of dividend declaration, namely stock and cash dividends. Using event study method, MAAR and CAAR, this study found no evidence of abnormal returns on the declaration day for either of the types of dividends. However, significant negative returns are reported on days prior to the declaration day for stock dividend, indicating speculative nature of the investors. Furthermore, it provides positive returns during the post-announcement period as the investors realize the chance of potential gains. However, as far as cash dividend is concerned companies listed under DSE do not provide any significant abnormal returns during the 60 days event window.  For CAAR, no significant return is reported for cash dividend, while stock dividend provided a maximum 5.6% abnormal returns during the post announcement period

    Did national holidays accelerate COVID-19 diffusion during the first phase of the pandemic in Bangladesh?

    Bangladesh registered 20,117,32 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and the death toll crossed the grim milestone of 29,323 across the country as of August 31st, 2022. Despite the enforcement of stringent COVID-19 measures, the country witnessed an accelerated diffusion of coronavirus cases during the national events, inclusive of short festivals, in 2020. The present study aims to examine the association between these national holidays and the COVID-19 trasmission rate in Bangladesh. We employed a mathematical model and calculated the instantaneous reproduction number, Rt, of the 64 districts in Bangladesh to check the dynamics of COVID-19 diffusion. The comprehensive analysis shows a notable escalation of Rt value and thus the enhanced transmission rate in Dhaka and in all industrialized cities during the major events such as, garments reopening and religious holidays in Bangladesh. We further showcase the COVID-19 diffusion explicitly in Dhaka Division at the first phase of the pandemic in Bangladesh. Based on our analysis, a set of measures, including restricted public mobility and the celebration of festivals, alongside improving the public’s awareness of the situation, has been recommended to evade the future pandemic risks while running the national festival activities in Bangladesh

    Knowledge and attitude towards COVID-19 among adult people in Bangladesh: evidence from an online survey

    The objective of this study was to examine the levels and determinants of knowledge and attitudes toward COVID-19 among adult people in Bangladesh, using data from an online survey, conducted in May 2021. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis were performed to extract findings from data. The survey covered 993 respondents. A high level (78.4%) of effective knowledge and positive attitude (78.6%) were observed among the Bangladeshi people. More than eighty percent of the respondents could correctly mention at least one important symptom, mode of transmission, and preventive measures of COVID-19. Good knowledge and positive attitudes were found to be significantly higher among males, living in Dhaka city, having a higher level of education, health professionals, and the wealthiest people. Knowledge about COVID-19 has significant association with positive attitude of people towards COVID-19. Despite the high level of knowledge and positive attitudes, there still prevails some misconceptions among a group of people, as one-third of the respondents opined that COVID-19 is a divine punishment and 13% were in favor of keeping it secrete if COVID-19 infection happen to them. The findings underscore the need for more educational program and behavior change communication (BCC) for the subgroups of the population that has been identified with poor knowledge and negative attitudes towards COVID-19

    Performance analysis of selected machine learning techniques for estimating resource requirements of virtual network functions (VNFs) in software defined networks

    Rapid development in the field of computer networking is now demanding the application of Machine Learning (ML) techniques in the traditional settings to improve the efficiency and bring automation to these networks. The application of ML to existing networks brings a lot of challenges and use-cases. In this context, we investigate different ML techniques to estimate resource requirements of complex network entities such as Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) deployed in Software Defined Networks (SDN) environment. In particular, we focus on the resource requirements of the VNFs in terms of Central Processing Unit (CPU) consumption, when input traffic represented by features is processed by them. We propose supervised ML models, Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) and Support Vector Regression (SVR), which are compared and analyzed against state of the art and use Fitting Neural Networks (FNN), to answer the resource requirement problem for VNF. Our experiments demonstrated that the behavior of different VNFs can be learned in order to model their resource requirements. Finally, these models are compared and analyzed, in terms of the regression accuracy and Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) of the percentage prediction error. In all the investigated cases, the ML models achieved a good prediction accuracy with the total error less than 10% for FNN, while the total error was less than 9% and 4% for MLR and SVR, respectively, which shows the effectiveness of ML in solving such problems. Furthermore, the results shows that SVR outperform MLR and FNN in almost all the considered scenarios, while MLR is marginally more accurate than FNN

    Relationship between Ownership Structure and the Modes of Dividend Payment: A Study on Dhaka Stock Exchange

    This paper investigates whether percentage of ownership controlled by the directors of companies has any association with types of dividend declared by them. Based on the data for the years 2006 to 2009 from the Dhaka Stock Exchange, this paper found that most of the companies provided stock dividends rather than cash dividends. Using Yate’s Continuity Correction Chi-square Test, this study has found existence of a significant relationship between the percentage control of ownership and types of dividend declared. Furthermore, the study indicates that the companies having ≥50% share controlled by the directors are 3 times more likely to offer stock dividends than companies havin

    Old Enemy with a New Face: Re-emerging Monkeypox Disease – An Update

    Human monkeypox (MPX), a multi-country re-emerging disease, is rapidly spreading around the world. The etiological agent of this disease, Monkeypox virus (MPXV), is a DNA virus classified into three genetic types (West Africa, Congo Basin clade, and one new clade-3). Atypical or unusual symptoms as well as asymptomatic infection of MPXV has also been reported. Transmission among humans is possible by droplets, contact, sexual intercourse, and fomites. Secondary transmission of this disease has been reported to occur in less than 10% of cases where it was found 35%–88% of smallpox. Mother-to-fetus transmission by vertical route is also possible for this disease. Modern equipment, biosafety level-3 laboratory facilities, and trained expert persons are needed to diagnose this disease. Previous data support that ~85% clinical protection is provided by smallpox vaccines for monkeypox, although initially non-human primates models were used for various experiments, and also side-effects of this vaccine have been notably mentioned in various studies. Limited research findings of JYNNEOS vaccine has supported the comparatively lower prevalence of MPX cases with vaccination. Few drugs, including cidofovir, tecovirimat, brincidofovir, and vaccinia immune globulin intravenous are preferable against this disease, although clinical trial data is limited and FDA-approval is also pending. This review-based study presents an overall scenario of Monkeypox disease (MPXD) based on previously published studies. Recommended clinical treatment and vaccination, appropriate infection prevention and control strategies, adopting one health approach, and quick identification of hotspots using a wastewater-based surveillance system need to be followed to check the further spread of MPX outbreaks
